What are they doing right in the South?

The north was dragged into a national lockdown first time around with rates much lower than they currently are in the south.

It’s a massive north / south divide that will not be forgotten.

This might come as a bit of a surprise to you.....but there are stoodent down south as well.
I never said there wasn't. London was riddled right before locking down. The north was relatively unaffected. Now it appears to be the reverse. Viruses cannot be micromanaged when endemic. The problem can be deferred at significant cost, that's it. I recall back in the day - if you went to the GP with one, you'd get sent away, told to rest as "there is nothing we can do for a virus". If you went there wanting to discuss a killer virus that is highly infectious but mostly asymptomatic, you might have been kicked out of the practice.

Apparently the pattern for viruses in winter is usually to kick off worse in The North because it’s colder earlier and then get more virulent in the South a bit later. Maybe Covid is just doing that?

That could be true. Probably historically viruses/colds/flu are more prevalent up here.

All I can say is people take it very seriously down here in the South East. A few examples being on the underground and trains, I'd guess 95% of passengers wear masks, same in shops, even in the school playground at drop off and pick up - everyone wears them. Sanitiser is everywhere and most people carry a bottle. Maybe it's the same in the Midlands and the North.. I don't know?
