Which is your favourite American band?

Anyone apart from the foo fighters, I always feel like Dave grohl is cheating on kurt cobain, & I’m probably in the minority of thinking they are massively overrated, nirvana were 10 times better & dg must have been rubbing his hands together when kurt had that unfortunate accident whilst polishing his rifle
Anyway velvet underground, zz top were great entertainment live & although not lyrically poetic gave you a buzz, and Metallica, Janice Joplin & so many country artists to long to name, Cohen/buffalo Springfield/& patsy cline/ nick cave- if those 2 were American (not sure)

I have 17 hours of music on a USB stick that plays in the car.

The most biggest three US bands on it are:

Steely Dan
Tom Petty and the HBs
Lynyrd Skynyrd

I am going to be a bit controversial, but for a country with a population of nearly 400 million America has offered very little band wise. They have faired much better with solo artists though.

I don't think he was happy when Kurt topped himself but I agree Nirvana where so much better and the Foo fighters are overated. I find some of there songs really good for the first half and then they just get really repetitive. May just be me but I feel they are half done at times

My all time favourite...and still listen to them now.........Styx....favourite band.

Some not already mentioned.

Grant Lee Buffalo, (80's)
Durand jones and the indications (beautiful blue eyed soul...will be big)
Bon Iver
Belly or Throwing Muses.....(for Tanya Donellys' voice)

Loads already mentioned, and I’ll add Booker T. & the M.G.’s. So cool.
Good choice. Was at the Robin venue in Bilston about 8 years ago to see the guitar legend and cool Memphis dude Steve Cropper. Had a nice chat with him on the hotel stairs before he went on stage. A delightful Southern gentleman in his early seventies who has played with all the soul greats like Otis Redding and sat in on most Memphis recording sessions throughout the 1960s.

Great stuff, love to hear little personal experiences like that, bet you were made up. We went to Memphis some years ago and did all the music venues and museums including Stax Museum, so many artefacts in there including Steve Cropper’s guitar and Booker.T’s original Hammond organ they recorded Green Onions on plus Otis Redding’s short brown suede jacket on show, which I gawped at for about 5 minutes! and the history of Soul from its early Gospel beginnings, loved it!

Probably Deftones or Pixies.

Honourable mentions to Talking Heads, REM, Interpol, Warpaint and At The Drive-In.

Daryl Hall and John Oates (late 70s/early 80s), superduo+

Got all their albums on vinyl, ain't played them since we were in the old Fourth Division!

My metal/indie list has a few.

Deftones.
Devo.
Joe Jackson.
Korn.
Nirvana.
linkin park.
QOTSA.
Slipknot.
The Strokes.
SOAD.
Trivium.
The Vandals.
Weezer.

None of the above in the same league though as The big O. What a fantastic voice Roy had.

Some great bands mentioned on this thread, especially by Potts Must Go and Tangolanding.
Ovlov and Spirit Of The Beehive also great but obviously not well known.

60's The Beach Boys
70's The Eagles
More recently Green Day and Nirvana

Oh plus Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three (if I'm allowed to cheat a bit)
