Why did we start the season so under prepared?

K
We don't score enough goals to get promoted and rely too much on CJ to make things happen , the manager needs time but when nxt season comes around we have to be winning more than we are losing ! We have signed too many mediocre players when for the last 2 years we have been crying out for an attacking midfielder
Kaikai could be the attacking midfielder if we play 3 centre halves. Dougall and Stewart with Kaikai in front of them as the midfield 3. Garbutt and Gabriel providing the width as wing backs. Any 2 from Madine, Yates or Hamilton up front.
Kaikai out wide isn't working, put him down the middle with the security of Dougall and Stewart behind him and you have a decent League 1 attacking midfielder.

I'm sure we've done this before...

If Sadler expected promotion from a rookie coach and a high turnover of players then that's so ambitious as to be naive. I would imagine, if the end of this year shows promise and there's a clear sign of focussed recruitment and next year starts well, all will be good.

His stated goal on taking over the club was 3 years, if it happens sooner great but it's a process (or words to that effect)

I'd have kept Feendog and Fonz, let Spearing go and recruited in a more focussed way but hey ho. We didn't and here we are with Wigan to beat and Jordan Thorniley is the new Bobby Moore.

Agree with your theory but I definitely wouldn't have kept the Fonz. Feeney still actually belongs to us and we're probably paying a decent proportion of his wages.

I think Fonz would have made a difference in the odd game and maybe suited Critchball more than any of the players who departed. Right now we've got a gaping hole for a right footed player on the left with a bit of something about them. We can talk about Fonz and his faults all week but we don't have a Fonz in the squad at all. He'd have been a useful sub for me. But, it's splitting hairs. Point is, I think it's gone now.

Would Critch do it differently if he had his time again. Who knows? I suspect he doesn't know either and won't till it has all turned out however it does.

Fonz would have been useless with the empty stadiums. How can he clap the fans with no one there?

I think Fonz would have been a better option than Sarkic and Lubala

Strange he was discarded when still in contract

Good player Fonz who never let us down

Get rid of the names, so Fonz went. He’s the one with that but of tricky skill that could have run the top line with Madine and Yates IMO. But of course Madine was not part of the plan either. Da Fonz wasn’t going to score lots but would have suited a variant Critchball selection front three. Obviously not athletic enough for coach.

I can't get on board with the keep Fonz way of thinking, he flattered to deceive massively and rarely seemed to contribute much, he'd been at the club a long time and was highly unlikely to improve or offer us anything more than we'd seen from him previously. We needed (and still need) better.
However, that isn't to say that whoever has been brought in has faired any better, which is the bigger disappointment.

KK needs a definite position. The only place is behind the front 2. However, short term I might give a go alongside Madine. Yates behind, Little Simms 1st change.

Whatever we do with Kaikai I'm now thinking that 3 5 2 or 5 3 2 is the best use of the players we currently have in the squad.
We have no wingers or wide midfielders so in my opinion 4 3 3 and even 4 4 2 just aren't going to be that effective.
I know we have had some success with something resembling a 4 4 2, but we haven't been particularly convincing.

The best football we played last season was with Kaikai and the Fonz behind Gnads..in a 3421 formation

Played well creating more than enough chances in several games

Fonz had about 8 years on and off to prove himself and whilst I always liked him he was inconsistent to say the least.
Now he's gone he suddenly becomes just what we need whilst some newly signed players are written off before they get a start.
That's the typical world of a footballer supporter and I don't exclude myself from that comment.

Kaikai hasn't become a bad player and I haven't seen or heard anything to suggest his attitude is bad, he just isn't being played to his strengths.

Yep agreed

Both wings have been an issue recently

Kaikai needs to play more centrally, in and around the the oppositions penalty area where he can create little pockets of space and play people in

Not stuck out wide left with a starting position around the half way line

Wide left on the halfway line in a 4 4 2 probably suits Mitchell best from the players we have available.
I dont think he has been given a proper chance there and I am sure that he would be a better option than Kaikai.
Not having a go at Kaikai but he is offering nothing out there, and the same applies to whoever we have played on the right.
Some games it feels like we are playing with 9 men in an attacking sense!

30 years of neglect by The Os, receivership and the need to build the club from the ground up.

Yep would like to see either Garbutt or Mitchell on the left and Gabriel on the right

Get people on their correct side so they dont have to cut back in all the time

Totally understand that and not having a go at the current regime or manager but I watch the games and I dont think the squad is being deployed in a way that best suits the players attributes.

Said it this season, said it last season, Kaikai's best position is a the front of a diamond. Whereas I back Critchley, he recruited players last summer to suit a style he wanted to play which hasn't paid off. The need to change system means we have a surplus of players in a number of positions. Added to that, I think some players are simply not good enough.

I agree with that 💯

I remember Southend away and Kaikai ran the show playing as a 10

I also remember him tearing us a new one when he was at Shrewsbury, we couldn't get close to him
