Wigan Athletic v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 26.01.21

So what is the current situation: it is on providing we don't have any further positive cases after today's mass testing?

I imagine we won't have any of the players available who didn't feature against Brighton (other than Stewart, fitness permitting)

That's what Critch said. When is Mitchell out of quarantine?

Looks like it will go on.

EFL's rules have pretty much been "If you have a positive it's up to the team on whether or nor they want to play." and it looks like we want to go ahead and play because we probably don't want to get too many games behind.

Tonight is a must win.

We need 7 points minimum from our next 3 matches of Wigan, Burton, and Northampton.

UTMP!

So...... does this mean that whoever missed out against Brighton is now available to play tonight, or simply that we have had no further positive cases (from the rest of the players/staff)?

He'd better not bench Thorniley just cos he doesn't like him. He played well against Brighton and should keep the shirt. He had a better game at centre half than Husband ever has AND he didn't even get sent off!
Yeah I'd agree with that. I'm not confident Husband plays a full 90 minutes at centre half without either an almighty cock up leading to a goal or a sending off. Or both.

Very little to work with unless we have a couple of injury recoveries.

More chance if they stick with the back three/five and put him in the middle again.

I think he'll go back to the two in the middle though. When they switched on Saturday, Thorniley was the one taken off. So he still sees JH as the better player on the ball.

Hopefully now they've dropped the high defensive line and offside trap in favour of two holding midfielders it should offer more protection and take some of the pressure off. That's why the red cards were happening.

I dont feel optimistic about tonight knowing we’ve so many of the first team out. Hope I’m bloody wrong and we get a win UTMP

Thornilley was solid at Brighton. If he’s picked to play, and does as well as he did, Critch might need to have another think about him.

Hmmm. Now Garbutt is out it all feels imbalanced. Don't see how that midfield is going to create much. I would have stayed with 3-5-2 but I don't think we physically can now.

In fact, a choice between Sullay or bez is just about the only optional pick in that line up.

Getting concerned why are we not playing our new striker when we are still not scoring enough and we have a depleted squad, what does it take to give him a start🤔

A midfield three of Williams, Robson and Virtue isn't going to win many games in league 1. If we do get three points tonight I'd rate it as good a result as beating Hull, Portsmouth and Peterborough tbh.
We're missing Garbutt, Gretarsson, Ballard, Turton, Ward, Dougall, Hamilton, and Anderson. That's decimation. I hope people remember this if we don't win this comfortably.

Lubala and Virtue better show up this match. I’d be inclined to hook the former for Apter if it’s a no-show by half time. Can’t afford any passengers. Team looks understandably thin on the ground.

Scuse ignorance...who's Mariette?

Luke is a new addition to the U18’s side after his release from fellow League One side, Wigan Athletic.
Luke also plays in the centre of the park, but he is more of a creative player who likes to link play up and get his side moving up the pitch.

Are you joking?
The toys will be well and truly out of the pram if we don't win!

So are we all presuming husband left back , can’t see who would play
left wing back a system if it is 3 at the back , maybe Luballa 🤷

Having seen Lubala youtube goals video...does anyone think we may be playing him in the wrong position.I think hes been pretty poor so far this season and maybe wasted out left...could he be pushed up further to play off Madine or partner with Yates...because he never seems to get into scoring positions out on the left and spends more time tracking back with left back....thoughts....I would love to see him come good.

Gabriel Ekpiteta Williams Thorniley Husband in a five would give them wing backs with Lubala and Yates in behind Madine, but not sure it's that. Not as clear now with Garbutt not even in the 18.

He’s young and inexperienced, as we saw at Brighton when he came on. The 2 certainties at present are Yates and Madine, and they’ve been playing well. Our problems are in midfield and our lack of creativity.

Wigan have selected a very attacking side, I doubt it'll be another 1-0. I'm slightly worried about Thornily, MJ and Bez as all have been pretty poor of late. Hopefully tonight's the night we see the best of them.
