Wigan Athletic v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 26.01.21

I'm not after an argument cos most of your thread is spot on. Husband - for a left-back he plays to narrow, which gives the wide attacker the advantage every time. That's all.

No that's fine all about opinions. You may be right generally, but tonight I thought he did everything right, including getting forward and supporting Lubala much more than he has in previous games. That could be down to the comfortable scoreline but even so he had a great game.

I missed the game and without knowing the score decided to read this matchday thread. Any of you fancy a laugh, read it back. There are some absolute corkers on it. I'm getting on a bit and like any middle-aged male I'm prone to having a little dribble when I laugh but some of the comment made me almost completlely piss myself! Before kick-off it and during most of the first half it seemed that the consensus view was that we were going to struggle with most of the players being apparently crap. But low and behold once the goals started to flow there were more U turns made than the wa*k sh*t Tory government 😂

I've just seen the league table and didn't realize we had only scored 21 goals in 21 league games before tonight. That is shocking. Only Northampton are worse with 20 goals.
Let's hope we carry on playing like we did tonight for the rest of the season.

Madine and Yates doesn't produce the goods!

I've said before that sooner or later some poor buggers were going to be on the end of a sound thrashing from us. First thirty minutes was fairly horrible, no real possession, bad touches poor passing, and i though we rode our luck a little bit. the last ten minutes of the first half we just sort of woke up.

Our coals scored against chances that the commentator mentioned really shocked me, what was it - 250 odd chances and just 21 goals, which kind of tells us we have been knocking on the door of this sort of scoreline for a while. Thought Virtue had a good game in parts when we attacked he was always in or around the penalty area looking for opportunities. Third goal was fantastic.

Thorniley had a good game, Epki topped off another solid performance with a goal, hes been threatening to do that for a bit. Goals from corners, !!!!! not something weve been able to do much this year. Madine was epic again there was a flick from a very tight position on the right where he set Gabriel off, i chuckled at that one.

Husband did a job, gabriel was good going forward and did a job defensively. Lubi probs had his best game and i think a goal might set him going, but as someone else has said on here i dont think he's very comfortable out on the wing.

i thought Robson got a bot more into the game than he has the last few games hes played, he's not seemed to be the same player since he got sent off. Hes come back a bit cautious. Williams i still dont get. there was one good pass putting Gabriel which was a very good pass, but i dont see it.

cant wait for saturday.

Williams battled away all night and didn't give an inch!

I don't get the discontent towards williams. He does the dirty side of the game very well. He wins the ball and then sets us up on an attack. Fair enough he isn't going to take on 4 players and play a defence splitting pass but neither is anybody else in this team. For me, he has more influence on the game than Robson does. Yet he receives far more critisism.

At 7:34 I texted my brother and wrote ‘dire so far’. I’d defy you to watch the first 30 minutes and overly disagree.

Kurt’s presentation skills leave much to be desired and he does watch footy in a bi-polar kind of way, but, as someone else posted on that thread, we were watching ‘two gash teams’

The first time I looked at the thread, people were celebrating Eki’s goal whilst I was still watching Maxwell’s long clearance from hands which found it’s way to Bez on the left wing. (A move that worked twice against Hull at home, leading to Kaikai’s goal on the second occasion)

For a moment I wondered if people were taking the piss out of the performance and creating imaginary goal celebrations. I realised half a minute later that my feed was lagging behind and stayed well away from the thread until full time

Last night showed what confidence can do to a team and players when you get two goals up. It was a fairly even game til we got those two goals just before half time. We come out for the second half, spring in our step and score a great team goal to go three up. Then all of a sudden the game looks easy. But we've been at this point a couple of times before in the season thinking that we'd turned the corner and the only way was up. We can't keep having these false dawns. It has to turn into something tangible. I thought some of the so called squad players did ok and considering a good few of us thought it was a significantly under strength team due to different factors it was a great result. I'd imagine there's a spring in their step at training this morning or whenever it's next due. Well done to them.

Last night was a good performance.

Yeah Wigan are a bad team but Critchleys tactics were spot on. We bullied them all through the game which we’ve not done for ages and we made an ugly win look pretty with that score line.

Can’t wait for Saturday now 😁

See what a convincing win does for this Board. Everyone's happy and conversing sensibly with each other - even those of us who normally throw grenades at each other on the other forum. 🙂

Virtue in team of the week 😲 sure a few will have a say on that.

Like I said previously I thought he did well, got in the box, not afraid to shoot and set up Yates who could have made it 3, especially considering he was playing on the right.

Bit of a headache now for critch or is it same team for burton?

Where did that come from? Wigan are poor but I thought we were absolutely outstanding tonight, in every single way. We did everything tonight that we've been failing to do all season. We were determined, aggressive, and ruthless. Even in the first 30 mins when it was more even I thought we were doing a lot right, and had put a couple of quality moves together.
To have almost the entire first team taken out, and then go and win away 5-0 takes some doing. Some of the moves we put together were superb, not least the one for Virtues goal. In fact, we've scored some fantastic team goals this season, we just haven't done it anywhere near often enough.

I don't always do individual player comments but can't help myself this time ☺

Maxwell - good positioning, and pulled off a great save in the second half. Reliable.

Gabriel - I'd be delighted if we signed this guy permanently, he's a very good player and would be a real asset. Still improving too. Solid defensively and a threat going forward.

Husband - I've always said that I think we can do better, but I'm going to swallow my pride tonight, I thought he was outstanding, and my MOM. Seems he's not giving up his spot for Garbutt without a fight and I say good for him. Made a good claim to keep it tonight.

Ekpiteta - clean sheet and a goal. What more can you say, perfect evening for him. Possibly our best signing this season? I feel a lot more comfortable when he has the ball now than at the start of the season, seems to have thrived under Critchley. Maybe his best success story so far.

Thorniley - I think his two appearances recently have really made a case for keeping him. And I wouldn't be unhappy if we did. Some players may have had a don't care attitude after being told they can leave but he's really stepped it up instead. Good attitude and certainly given Critchley something to think about.

Williams - I know he's not for everyone, he's not as composed or cultured as others, but I think he's a useful player to have. He puts himself about more than any of our other midfielders and sometimes you need that. Played well, especially in the first 30 mins which was much more a battle.

Robson - did the simple things well and seems to compliment Williams.

Virtue - still a bit rusty but improved as the game went on. His goal was another example of doing something we haven't done all season - getting midfielders forward into goalscoring positions, and it was a great finish. He can get goals and offers us something different to our other midfielders. I can see him becoming a regular. Most successful sides get goals from midfield.

Lubala - he can be frustrating to watch, you just feel he's about to really take someone on and then he doesn't. I think a regular run in the side will do wonders for him, and he's certainly got the right attitude, but perhaps lacking a little bit of confidence? He also tracked back well and overall good performance. Justified selection ahead of kaikai imo.

Yates - nine goals now, from really struggling to get his first goal for us, he's stealthily becoming a 20 goal striker for us. Can never fault his effort and seems to be finding that knack of being in the right place at the right time.

Madine - gave their defence a torrid time. Held the ball up well and linked up with others. He's the lynchpin, I think we're a much better team with him in it. Won the flick on for the fourth goal too.

Difficult to rate the subs, but I will say that Simms looked very good. Finally we have someone that made some great runs - we've really missed that because Madine and Yates often play with their back to goal. Could be a KDH quality signing.......or I might be getting carried away bit.
Also, great to see Apter get on the pitch, a BFC youth player, and won the corner for the fifth.

Overall, it was a perfect night and I can't fault them. Excellent performance from a depleted team, and this really needs to be held up as the standard we need.
Dave totally agree with all of that. So much so I just based my entire review show around it 🙂 I couldn't have said it better myself to be honest. Dave you can watch it and how much I agreed with what you said here reaction to last nights 0-5 WIN

Because, I said if we want to go up we need better than Turton, it's really not difficult is it. I based it on stats and statistics. Watch Gabriels performances and arguably 2 MOTM performances in a row.

Not desperate to be right, I didn't mention Turton. You did.
Stats and statistics 🤔 Gabriel is being brought along slowly but surely by Critch and is starting to look the part. Turton has the edge on experience and know how, between them
I am happy with our right back cover.

One is substantially better than the other.
