Worst ref decision against us.

Phil Dowd against Man City. His various decisions against us changed the result of the game, even with the excellent game david Silva had. The Tevez foul against evo not given being the worst as they went on to score

A few years after that United game, which was without doubt not only the worst reffing decision against us but of all time, me and a mate were at some awards night in London and Peter Walton was the after dinner speaker, I think, or he was there in some capacity anyway my memory’s a little hazy from that night. 🍺.

My mate got chatting to him and I joined in we berated him for about ten minutes about that decision against United. He was a nice chap actually and admitted to us when he saw that challenge back, on Varney he realised he’d made a massive error and it was a stonewall penalty.

Like I say was actually a nice guy who took the time to talk to us and held his hands up about it, however I still regret not pouring laxatives into his drink before he went.

Ref at Accy when in League 2. Gave them a penalty for nothing with 2 minutes to go.
We were leading 1-0 at the time and lost 2-1 with last kick of the game.

FA Cup 4th round at Sheffield Utd. From 2-0 down we equalised in the last minute. The ref at first awarded the goal then changed his mind by the linesman. It was for a foul however the only thing that could have done that was a blade of grass!
Never forget his name after 52 years,Ray Tinkler !

Memory gets foggy with age but recall Andy Morrison having a header disallowed against Bradford - foul for a push yet no one was near him. Would have put us 3 up going into the “infamous” 2nd leg.
Also recall some table (from the Premier League season) where all contentious decisions were reversed - we would have finished 11th

For me the one that sticks in the memory most is that donkey Peter Walton not awarding us a blatant pen against Man U when Varney was just completely taken out/pushed over.

Made it worse that we had the opportunity to go 3 up and we would have probably won the game.
This ☝🏼

Two immediately spring to my mind, the bastard who single handedly ensured Charlton went through to the next round of the FA Cup under Steve McMahon 1-2. And the notorious Mike Reid giving Coventry a bye in the League Cup under Nigel Worthington.

If it wasn't a foul, it was a corner.
There were two options. It was either a Blackpool free kick or a corner, nothing else was possible, no other possible options however the ref gave a goal kick.

The goal kick went up to the halfway line, GTF was two foot away from their man but the ref inexplicably awarded them a free kick.

The ball was pumped forward, Kingson came flapping and the rest is history...

If my memory serves me right, and it usually does, that was actually in the league game at Bradford in the same season.

Mine goes back to 1962 when Blackpool played Norwich in the second leg of the League Cup semi final at Bloomfield Road. Pool had lost the first leg 4-1 but played superbly in the second leg and were winning 2-0. All the Pool fans were praying for a third goal and when it duly came after lots of pressure, the home crowd went delirious in their celebrations. The referee awarded the goal but the Norwich players including the goalkeeper brought a hole in the side netting to his attention and he disallowed the goal. I was right behind the Kop goal standing at the front next to the wall and I still say to this day that a goal should have been awarded. This decision by the referee cost Pool an appearance in the 1962 League Cup Final. After the game I was so incensed I organised a petition and sent it with a letter to the Football League.

Absolutely agree, every time he shows his ugly mug on BT Sport i hurl abuse at him whilst the wife tells me to let it go and grow up.

Blackburn away in the Prem, GTF was clearly fouled and the ref gave a free kick to Rovers. Hoof upfield and Kingson gifted them the equaliser.
& just before that he gave a goal kick right in front of me, & it was a blatant corner, that led directly to their equaliser...

Such an emotive thing this, as we would have stayed up, but would that have perpetuated the scum/virus that owned the club??

We were blessed to have that one season, there are so many supporters out there that will never have that experience, my one regret, not going to more away games

Would have to go with the Man U one. Other decisions such as the Blackburn away game annoyed me more but the Man U, Peter Walton one in todays age would have been overturned by VAR.

The ones I would have said (United, Blackburn) have already been mentioned so I'll give some others a go..

In terms of ramifications: Baptiste was fouled in the build up to West Ham's winner against us, he was clearly just pushed over which left us a man down on their counter attack. Potentially cost us another promotion to the Prem (regardless of how that would have gone).

In terms of sheer terrible refereeing: Can't remember the exact game this season, Burton maybe? When Kaikai was taken out by one of their players, the guy went HEAD FIRST into him like something off WWE. A straight red IMO, and instead he got away without a card and the ref booked the two captains for coming over to him.

Without doubt

The penalty Bolton were awarded in the Freight Rover Northern Final. I think corner hit Keith Walwyn in the face and dropped onto his arm. It was a total shocker. It took half the team to stop Andy Garner attacking the ref after that one. Garner then got sent off just to make things worse.

At the end of that season I was chatting to Phil Horner and I was saying how proud the fans were the way we played, he said we had a few decisions go against us and the Varney one was the worst.

Agree with that. Were we not 2 up at that time and surely would have gone on to win instead of losing.
That would have kept us in the Prem.
Worst decision ever.
Don't care how 'nice' Walton was, how could he have possibly missed that one?
How much did Fergie pay him?

Portsmouth away 2004 FA cup game we were drawing 1 - 1 and in the dying minutes of the game right in front of the Pool supporters Yakubu handled the ball but it went in the net and the ref gave the goal....there where quite a lot of traveling Pool fans and we couldnt believe how blatantly he hand hand balled it and got away with it right in front of the ref.

My wifes cousin (pompey fan) was with us in the pool end and even he said shouldnt have stood.

The Charlton one, around 2000 was the worst, especially as he lived so close to the Valley and had recently been in their corporate hospitality.

💯 I’ve never felt such rage at a ref during a game.

I don't think Walton dare award that blatant penalty and face Fergie with United 3 down. He bottled it.
Read later he refereed 18 Man United games and they won the lot.

Just commented on this on the Lee Mason thread. An appalling performance
