Would you start Patino?

Having just arrived, new to the team-mates and style of play.. Dunno how many minutes he has had in his pre-season… Would you throw him in from the off vs Stoke away? Or ease him in on the bench, start him vs Barrow Tuesday, and then see where it takes us come Swanse at home next Saturday?

I’ll be very surprised if he makes a starting line up for a bit.

I think if we did Stoke would try and break his legs. Best ease him in and get him used to the other lads a bit first.

If he's fitting in quickly during training (very quickly, 1 day), then yes.
After reading all the positive comments about him, I'm really looking forward to seeing him as soon as possible.
Hope to see him at some point at Stoke.

I certainly wouldn't leave him out purely based on the opposition's physical reputation. Surely that's one of the reasons Arsenal have loaned him out?

I'm not convinced having Patino and Fiorini together in midfield is going to work. Because of inexperience and physical strength. It might be great, but they might get bullied into oblivion. It'll probably be a bit of both, but we will probably need a couple of more hardened players in there, rather than one. If Patino does play deep as a 6, with two advanced midfielders, he's going to be massively exposed at the start of his career aged 18, surely? Can't see that happening tbh.

I get the feeling that patino has been brought to the club as an alternative to fiorini. Maybe they'll deputise each other over the season. Don't see them both playing together often if at all. They're such similar players in a lot of ways.

Fiorini behind the front 3, Patino alongside Connolly/Dougall/even perhaps Stewart for the bit of experience and physicality. That would be the eventual formation for me. It isn't the 'hardest' of midfields but not that many sides are going to try and kick us off the park. We have two highly regarded young lads who should bring what we really needed which was more imagination and skill to the middle of the park. I want to see us use them both as much as possible.

To answer the O/P though - I probably wouldn't start Patino Saturday purely because he's had no real time to gel with the squad and not sure how match fit he is. Fiorini was lively first half but obviously ran out of steam later in the game against Reading. Patino I'd expect on the bench at Stoke and maybe on for last 25-30 mins. After that I would expect him to be in contention for starting most games.

If his fitness is right then I would 100% start him. We are very lucky to have him and we need to use him as much as can while we have him. This signing is definitely a wow one in my opinion and I'm confident that any doubters will turn believers after seeing him in action. This could be the best ride ever 👍

Put him on the bench, he will get at least 30 minutes if we run out of steam like we did against Reading.

Players have got the first game under their belts plus a full week's training, so I would be disappointed if they are still running out of steam. As far as Patino is concerned, logically he should start on the bench, but MA will assess that situation I'm sure.

Leave him out completely against Stoke . He may not be match fit ,but if he is ,he needs to get used to the players around him . He's 18 and if he has a bad game on his first ever league appearance it could effect him for the next few games . That young Aresnal striker we had on loan had a night mare for us last year and I don't think he scored a single goal after missing a couple of good chances {Tyreece John - Jules }

Appleton plays 4-3-3 with 2 ‘number 8’s’ in his midfield 3. The emphasis is on moving the ball offensively which is a lot different to the previous Manager, I know you’ll struggle to take this 😁

We definitely need some steel in there (Connolly or Stewart) but we’ve now got three midfielders (Fiorini, Carey, Patino) who can all comfortably handle the ball and look to play forwards.

If you had Patino sitting at 6, sticking two ‘hardened players’ in there would negate how Appleton plays and also limit creativity from the middle of the pitch which has been an issue for previous seasons if the wide men weren’t on it or well shackled.

From now, It’s two ball players & 1 grafter. The days of two sitting midfielders who go sideways and are limited attacking wise are gone 👋🏻 and it’ll be much more interesting to watch.

If you’re unsure of any of the above, listen to Josh Bowler post match on Saturday. Interesting stuff.

Oh and he starts for me. Fans are buzzing, we need to tap into it and even if he’s half fit he’ll still be pulling strings.

Agree with the two ball players and 1 grafter as that will get best out of Jerry as we saw in the first half against Reading.

You are talking as if he has never played football against adults before it’s really odd.

Negative claptrap

He barely has so not odd at all. 80th minute substitute against Sunderland and started against Forest. Anonymous against Forest. Struggled. Only 20 odd games for the u23s, mostly u18 games.

He's just arrived at the club on Wednesday so I'd say starting him tomorrow is unlikely.

If we can make it work with one holding midfielder great. I'm all for attacking football. But I dont see that all coming together overnight with the players we have at the minute. Our midfield completely surrendered on Saturday, with Fiorini and Carey in it. Swapping Patino for Virtue isn't going to immediately transform things I think.

We can come back to this. I dont know how quickly he will adapt to the Championship but it will only be his second ever start in senior football when he starts for us. And he's barely trained with us.

“Completely surrendered” is rather dramatic 🙈
Ok. But we lost control of the midfield. It needs a lot of work and giving an 18 year old his second ever start seems an odd way to go about it. But he may start and blow everyone away. We'll have to see.

So we need to keep the ball better, what better way than one of the best young midfield players in the world

I have no doubt Appleton will do the right thing

I hope that, whatever he does, we compete better in midfield than last week. It was all wrong, 2 of the 3 midfield players really struggled. And Fiorini started great and then got caught in possession and lost his way.

Ok so when do we start him then? When he’s 20? It’s going to take a few weeks or longer to get the dynamic right in midfield, but we’re going to have to try various options in that time. I’ll keep pointing out that this time last season we started with Grant Ward and Reece James central midfield, Patino could be 8 stone wet through and it won’t be as weak as that.

I’m only going off what I’ve seen on clips and reports about him, but I think one of his main strengths is going to be how good he is at keeping the ball. Which is a key component in keeping control of the midfield.

Start him 👍🏼

“Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal & Wolves sending us their promising youngsters.
Wow? When did that become the norm?
No, I don’t see them all playing together at once. And the negative is that they may not all come good immediately but……….if/when they do!

Yep agreed

Hopefully Gabriel is OK after his dip in the sea with big Gaz so Connolly can play behind Fiorini and Patino

Start them both and lets try and keep the ball

When he's 20? Now who's beinv dramatic? ** hell! I just mean tomorrow. Like let the lad unpack his bag and work out where he is and see how it works in training.

Clips and reports. The clips are all youth and u23 apart from his late sub goal against L1 Sunderland.

I'm sure he's going to be fantastic for us. But let's him off to a good start, after a few days training. Bring him on as a sub tomorrow, no problem.

That’s more like it.

So once he’s hung his stuff up in his wardrobe at the hotel he’s good to go.

I wasn’t being dramatic because at 20 he won’t be here. Let’s hope he’s a good un.

I think thats an oxymoron.

I wouldn't be keen to start Virtue and Carey tomorrow, so it's got to be Fiorini and Dougall and another. It might have to be Patino but it's not ideal if so.

It's completely ideal as he's probably the best player we have had for a long time

It'll be interesting to see if he does. One thing's for sure, I'm more excited about our prospects this season following his signing. If we could just find a centre forward with better movement, with Patino and Fiorini consistently providing good service, we could be on to a real winner.

I was thinking about Charlie Adam’s loan-spell debut the other day, when he got sent off. I think he started and Wellens wound him up.

Hopefully this young man will not let the occasion of wearing a tangerine shirt for the first time overwhelm him………

I’d bring him on at the hour mark; should be enough time to get the measure of what level he will need to be at.

I think consensus is that he should be a starting player for us this season. The question is just tomorrow - are two days enough time to know the people he plays with and the system the manager wants to well enough to start him tomorrow? No, not in my view. Pointless rushing to start him tomorrow if he doesn't know the system or the players around him. We have the whole season ahead.

I think we can afford to give him a week to get to know everyone and the role he'll play, but I can see him coming on for the last 20 minutes or so against tired Stoke legs. Long term though, as I said above, a starting midfield of Fiorini, Patino and Dougall/Connolly (or a fit Stewart) has me pretty excited about the football we could be seeing very soon.

Looking after the ball better has been a real bugbear of mine for a while, yeah we were great up to the half way line then gave it away too carelessly. Hopefully this is something we can improve on.

Nope too soon I'd go Grimmy Connolly Marv Williams Thompson Virtue Fiorini Carey Bowler Yates Corbeanu
Virtue Fiorini Carey... Not sure that midfield will strike fear into the opposition.

How come everyone is an expert on Patino when nobody on here has seen him play?
