Your favourite away trip

Just been told I've got to self isolate into October, so what does a man do? Of course, he comes straight onto AVFTT and asks banal questions to pass the time.

So, of all the away runs you've done, what stands out as your favourite? Not necessarily because we won - and lets face it, it would narrow the selection down significantly - just that you had a great day out for whatever reason.

I'm going for Oxford in the 84 FA Cup after we'd beaten City previous, it was my first long haul trip, done on an Astley Tours coach. Went with a older bloke from work who I barely knew called Eddie. Remember stopping off off somewhere in middle England, might have been Banbury?, there were two pubs either side of a village green, one accepted football the other didn't. We went in the not accepted for a quiet one, very civilised.

We took loads to the game, I was right at the back and you could see over the wall into the alley behind. It was already packed then the alley filled with another big group who I assume was the train crowd, so Lord knows how many we ended with there. It just seemed to be one of those days where everyone went, like Walsall last day of the season, or Barnet.

We played great too, think we were very hard done by in losing. Oxford were on the up at the time, just before they went into the top divisions and got to the League Cup final, but we gave as good as we got.

I also remember Everton playing them there soon after, Adrian Heath scored very late to win it. Their fans were rammed in, and they flowed down the whole terrace when that happened, looked incredible and I recall thinking we had the whole of that end as well, we must have looked something similar.

Carlisle away 69/70, promotion season, some Pool fans " borrowed " a ladder from a nearby building site and got into Brunton Park free by scaling a corrugated iron fence that had been heavily smeared with industrial strength grease .I felt compelled to join them and duly got in for nowt. A 2-1 win for the Pool made it a grand day out in Cumbria👍

I wasn't at that game, but wasn't that the one where Oxford won it with a dodgy penalty after the ball struck Dave Serella's arm?

The obvious answers are Cardiff and Yeovil at Wembley, but I would also go for Stoke in 93 (1-0 win against the odds - been a few threads about that match), and Hereford away in Nov 83 (no particular reason other than it was a great day out and we won 2-1, and we didn't win many in those days). Also the away cup replay at Maine Rd, which sadly we lost but a great atmosphere for a midweek night game

I think it was two Penalties that beat us. I also think they played Everton on the Wednesday night before.

To play us in Round 4, they had to beat Burnley in a replay. I remember being gutted we didn't get to play the Clampets, can you imagine how many naughty boys we'd have taken there. Oxford was bad enough! There would still be talk of the visit to Burnley to this day 😆

I was in London at that time so travelled with BASIL up to Oxford expecting a few hundred Pool at most.
Was amazed we filled both sides of the open away end whereby the likes of Everton only got half that end. Think Keith Mercer equalized for us & they got a dodgy winner?

Preston 1970 as a child.
As an adult, Peterborough 2010. Drove down with friends and found a beer festival in a pub en route (in Rutland). A couple of good pubs in Peterborough, a necessary victory and finding out that Swansea had lost at Sheff Utd.

all away trips in the 80's were definitely great memories - Oxford, Darlo, 'Boro, Brentford and the exploding pub, Mansfield in the snow....

for me in later times it has to be the two trips to the mags at Sid James Park having lived up here for nearly 30 years.
First visit and the exploits of the legend "Howard" in Samjacks - have a look on youtube - still makes me queasy watching it. Second visit when we beat them which ended up in a pub crawl round sunny South Shields and being greeted like heroes when we walked into a pub full of mackems in our 'pool shirts!!

Arsenal away in the FA Cup in 99/00??
Went on a Specials train full of Seasiders..Had a right laugh all day...And a sore head the next day 😃🍻

Nothing to do with the result, I always enjoy away days in Peterborough. Great pubs, always good crack. I do remember one trip, arriving on a Sunday morning, me and two mates were approached by a young foriegn lady. Her accent made It difficlt to understand what she wanted, but we eventually worked it out with the help of sign language. It was sex for money!

We didnt indulge, the pubs were just opening.

I loved the game at Molineux in January 2015. Although we were beaten it was the first time I had visited it and must admit it is one of my favourite grounds. Many wolves fans had come to pay their respects to Jack Hayward. Both sets of fans fully understood and talked about why their ex-owner was loved by them and our owner was loathed. I would have been ashamed to be an Oyston that day.

The 2-0 away win at Norwich in March 2008. It was so good to come away from a big Championship ground having won (was on hols for Leicester). Somehow found the Fat Cat pub beforehand, which set me up nicely.

For days out with my now 18 year son, I will never forget his first away game - 2-1 win at Cheltenham as part of the perfect 10, and 4-3 at Watford in 2008, when we came from behind 3 times and Alan Gow scored the winner late on.

Darlo away won 4-0...fantastic atmosphere all night
Darlo for me as well. Managed to get an excuse note from me mum to get out of school early and off I went with a schoolfriend to meet up with my father at his work, picked up Grandad and we drove to Manchester to meet up with my uncle who worked for Austin Reed. He floored the car to Darlo and we arrived bang on the first whistle, I remember Eammon O'Keefe scoring and the surge on the terrace as he ran to us, Paul Stewart with arms aloft as he added the fourth? and big Steve Hetzke being carried on the shoulders of jubilant Pool fans. Magical night.

Really enjoyed a few trips to Norwich over the years (once and never again on a coach from Blackpool) and then with a Norwich supporting mate from Lincoln Uni - always a good trip. Brilliant city to make a long weekend of it too - despite the ridiculous drive.

I do wish my answer was Darlington as well. Unfortunately I was one of the 30 or so in Poulton waiting for another Astley Tour with no spaces left. Returned home. Short term gutted to have missed it, long term one of the significant nights in my Pool history that virtually secured us promotion?

And Paul, yes 35+ years on I'm still bitter!

Ah, the Brentford exploding pub! I’ll never forget the look on our ‘respected’ BASIL member when he put his foot on the firework. 🤣

With the exception of Wembley, some of my better away games have been Bury, Accy and Huddersfield (can’t remember what years).

I’ve done a few bigger ones, like Man City et al but they never had the atmosphere of the lower league games.

Unfortunately not been to the nobbers away since 7 years old, which I don’t remember too well.

My top five favourite destinations were always :

Doncaster
Ipswich
Norwich
Derby
Nottingham

with honourable mentions for Huddersfield, Sheffield and Bournemouth.

One of my favourite ever away days was PLW in the PL. Champagne, beer, two BASIL doctors and a 4-0 win.

So many to mention isn't there?

Boro away on a Tuesday night to win 2-0 not to long ago was great. Just had a top evening with the worst hangover ever the next year.

Even though we lost Charlton away in the cup for the funniest coach journey ever.

Darlington away, Swansea 6-3, for the football. Newcastle in 2010 for a day on the lash with the boys. Plus some good days in the late 70’s early 80’s with pre season friendlies at local sides. Also any London away game especially the stop overs 😁👍🍺🍺🍺😂🧡🍊⚽

Swansea at the Vetch Field, last away game of the season 88-89, dancing on the terraces as Big Keith Walwyn climbed the railings behind the goal screaming like a little girl after we won 2-1 to stay up. To be fair Keith had a high pitched voice at the best of times.

Too many to mention but I think Forest away just because we came away knowing we'd be in the Prem the next season (have never been so sure of a victory in my life than the Cardiff game).
