French say Non to English language

Firstly, I have to say I love the French language and the way the French speak it with such emphasis and clarity of each word. What could be more attractive than a French woman pouting those beautiful phrases? But the French government is unhappy about the creeping use of English in advertising, music and film and has taken steps to keep the coming Olympics free from anglicisms. In a resolution adopted on Thursday, the lower house of Parliament has directed organisers of the Paris games as well as athletes, trainers and journalists to use French instead of English.

French lawmakers introduced a law 30 years ago, the 1994 Toubon Law, which made French mandatory for advertising, product-labelling, and public announcements and it stipulated that radio stations had to play a minimum of 40% of French language songs. Unfortunately for them, the use of English continued to creep into the daily lives of the French. They failed to compete with the use of English in films, sport, advertising etc due mainly to American imports. Even the French rugby team had "Rugby World Cup" on their jerseys which angered many.

Taking the above into account, the fuss in France around the use of English seems a little excessive to me. You don't hear Germans whining about English being used. And Scandinavians have embraced English as a language. Maybe French does not have that je ne sais quoi that the world finds compelling about our language.

Perhaps they are also “Taking back control” 😂😂😂

It sounds like the language will be dead in a few years if they carry on like this.

The beauty about the English Language is the use of words and terms from other languages around the world.

Ketchup from Chinese; Lemon from Arabic, Penguin from Welsh, Karaoke from Japanese, Ballet from French, Victim from Latin, to name but a few.

It would seem the French are being their usual haughty selves and depriving their own language of progression. All very haw he haw he haw. 🙄

Isn't French already the language of the Olympics?

Tony Blair addressed the Olympic Committee is French when London won the 2012 Games back in 2005.

Christ that's nearly 20 years ago.

My goodness, life slips by doesn't it.

FWIW, I love the French way of life and their country outside of the seedier parts of some cities is beautiful.

The irony being that France will be the first Islamic majority country in Europe so it will be au revoir no matter what law they pass.

Nothing to like about the French and their language, even their food…..I blame the ** of a teacher I had at school😂😂got my revenge when after my o levels we went on a trip to Jodrel Bank and was caught smoking…he told me to give him the cigarette which I did but it was still lit so……next morning I got my only caning..6 of the best as they say…embarrassing because we had Saturday morning school in those days and O and A level students after their exams were finished were exempt but needless to say I was one of those who had to attend.

I did pass by the way but no thanks to him,he was useless.
