Why do people hate Jews

I’m not talking about the current situation, I’m talking about all time basically. I remember my parents saying people didn’t like them because they were rich, but that can’t be the only reason, if it is at all.

The catholic chruch forbid and cracked down on charging interest on loans during medieval times (not to say some like the Medici in Italy didn’t find some loopholes). This didn’t apply to Jews however so naturally they became money lenders/bankers and gathered wealth which generated animosity (many Jews also had to do this because they were banned by the church from other professions). It also made them targets if you wanted to expel them and take their wealth, which you would use anti Semitic justifications to do so, such as blaming them for killing Jesus.

But also remember just being a different denomination of the same religion was enough to inspire great hatred, mistrust and huge continental wars, nevermind a completely different religion. So there’s that simple fact too. It was as recent as the 2007 that Tony Blair held off his conversion to Catholicism due to fears of how it would play out in Northern Ireland. And in the 90s people were querying candidates who wanted to become PM because they were catholic. Unthinkable now with a Hindu as our PM.

I can’t answer the question generally but I watched a programme last night on the BBC on the Israel Gaza war a woman was the presenter. (Sorry can’t remember her name) it showed the conflict from both sides after 07/10/23 massacre.

Anyone who didn’t hate Jews beforehand certainly would after last night the programme went into great depth about the local Jewish population in the West Bank stealing land off the Palestinians who have lived there for years.

These Jewish settlers were all armed with weapons supplied from the IDF and if events turned sour they could call up the IDF force who would respond in minutes they even moved on the BBC crew forcibly who were interviewing the local Palestinians.

The programme went into great death of the shooting of those two young boys (one aged 8) who was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier the other boy 14 was shot twice in the chest it was claimed he was carrying an IED device the whole thing was on video and he was carrying something but it couldn’t be proven what it actually was.

On the programme they talked to ex IDF soldiers who said rules were being ignored when it came to shooting a suspect and it didn’t matter wether they were adults or children.

It did show local Palestinian children (under 18) taking up arms and willing to fight the IDF as they said they had nothing else left to live for as they had nowhere else to go.

After the massacre on 07/10/23 I fully supported the Israeli response and still do against Hamas but as this war has gone on it’s becomes something else and the longer it goes on the innocent civilians in all this are slowly but surely being turned in to local militia and taking up arms against Israel.

Netanyahu has now built up enough confidence he’s now virtually sticking 2 fingers up to Joe Biden and saying we will do what we want and you won’t stop us.

Just can’t see an end to this not in a million years as generations of Palestinians are growing up hating the Jews and taking up arms.

Nope, I disagree.

I think most decent people capable of critical thinking wouldn`t "hate Jews" simply based on the despicable actions of a number of opportunistic Israeli Jews in the West Bank.

Whilst some people may "hate" the actions of the Jewish settlers in the West Bank, that shouldn`t lead to them "hating" the many millions of decent Jews the world over. `Cos you know what that would be.

That would be akin to "hating" all Catholics because of the actions of the IRA....

Their are plenty of Israelis who don't agree with their government, just like there are plenty of Brits who don't agree with ours.

Spot on Spudgun*. Nuanced thinking is pretty difficult for many people.

Change hate Jews to hate Zionists, and I agree with you. The demonstrations in Israel by anti Government Jews is hugely under reported in the West.

I’m not saying every Jew is hated world wide what I am saying and to recap is every Jew is hated in and around Gaza by the Palestinians for what has happened post 07/10/23.

Oh and by Iran of course.

With respect, I think you have that wrong, due to a misunderstanding of terminology.

“Zionism is a nationalist movement that emerged in Europe in the late 19th century aiming for the establishment of a homeland for the Jewish people, particularly in Palestine, a region roughly corresponding to the Land of Israel in Jewish tradition. Following the establishment of the State of Israel, Zionism became an ideology that supports the development and protection of Israel as a Jewish state.” (from Wikipedia)

Hating Zionists is akin to wishing the destruction of Israel as a state. However, it’s not wrong to deplore the attitudes and behaviours of the zealots in Israel (incl in their government) who want to illegally expand the Israeli state into the West Bank, building illegal fortified settlements, and depriving Palestinians of their homes by using violent and militaristic methods to drive them out.

Certainly won't fall out with you over this, my understanding is that it is a term currently used in Israel to distinguish the right wing settler zealots (oh, the irony) from the mainstream democrats.

I studied A Level religious studies & I never forget speaking to a Rabbi at the synagogue in Southport about the Jewish diaspora. He said that the Jews have “always been the guests & never been the hosts”. Meaning wherever they’ve chosen to stay, they’ve always been a guest to another persons land. The fact they’re considered the “chosen people” possibly has an impact on peoples opinions of them as well. I personally don’t care much for religion nor politics. When you mix the two together, it’s a recipe for disaster. So they best thing to do is keep away from both.

I went to Krakow 5 years ago and was lucky enough to have a guide that took me to places, he was a really nice guy. He took me to Auschwitz and told me a few stories how jewish visitors had acted, he didn't say anything untoward but I could tell be wasn't keen. It's considered a pilgrimage for Israeli school kids to visit, he painted a picture of general arrogance and rudeness by the children and said the security that was with them demand drivers get out their car to inspect it and get very hostile and aggressive. Maybe it's a reaction to part blaming poles for the holocaust but I also told the same by another pole when looking at the holocaust memorial in the centre of krakow. I'm relaying this 2nd hand, but I was surprised that the resident poles weren't fans of the Israelis who were visiting.
I don't personally know any Jews, I've done some work at a synagogue in Prestwich and met some decent people. They look after each other just like Muslims do, I envy them in that regard.

I had a relative who worked with and worked for jewish people and said they were persecuted for keeping/spending their wealth among their own people. They found them decent and hardworking.

There’s a certain type of Pole well represented in the badly named Law and Justice Party (who’ve just been kicked out of power) who didn’t like Jews.

Bit like here with slavery, they wanted to rewrite the narrative so that all Poles bravely resisted the Nazi occupation. While ignoring the Poles who, while fighting Nazis, were happy to handover Jews.

I think the guy you met might have been one of them.

But then again the people he was driving might well have been cut from the same cloth.

I dunno. I wasn’t there.

think that needs a bit more clarification. Are you suggesting that the nation of Israel should not have been created and even though it happened before you were born?
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out that the State of Israel was created in large part by the ethnic cleansing of the people who lived there before.

Bit like how the USA was created by the ethnic cleansing of the people who lived on that continent before other people arrived and kicked them out.

Those are just historical facts.

I think there's a tendency for the far left to view the world as a battle between oppressors and the oppressed, with them fighting for the rights of the oppressed.

This world view leads them to see Jews as the oppressors (they're wealthy, they must be, innit), and thus anyone fighting against them is "the oppressed" no matter how many innocent civilians they rape, murder and mutilate.

Edit:

Interesting link: The oppressed vs oppressor mistake

but that avoids answering the question.

Well there’s certainly a tendency to divide the world into oppressors and oppressed. That I do agree with.

Sadly it seems to be a part of human nature for the oppressed to become the oppressors at the first opportunity that is presented. Even if they oppress people who had nothing to do with their oppression.

but that avoids answering the question.
If your question was - are you advocating the destruction of Israel? Then my answer is no I’m not.

If your question was - are you saying Israel is therefore blameless? No I’m not.

But ask your question and then I’ll attempt to answer it.

I didn't know that hatred of Jews was still a thing until I was in my 20's or so. It's strange because there was always plenty of racial hatred around in the 70's but that was all directed at POC, Pakistanis et al. I just always took people as I find them.

my question was to 66 and you jumped in.

That's half of the story.

The other half of the story is the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the surrounding Arab states, who then had nowhere else to go.

Strangely, the left never seems to be too bothered about the second half of the story.

Why did you say “Arab States”.

There’s plenty of examples of European states discriminating against Jews as well. But you ignore that.

For the moment at least.

where did i ask you a question?
In post 24 you said I hadn’t answered the question.

So I asked you to clarify what the question was.

Actually. Don’t bother. I can see you’re diverting from the issue because you don’t have an answer to the answer.

nope, i asked a question of 66 and as i said you jumped in with a reply but you didn't answer the question i asked him. Fact is i haven't asked you a question.

Presumably this one: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001ytzd/the-other-war

Given that it's the BBC, and no doubt Hamas were involved in its production, I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

Yes that’s the one.

I recommend people on here watch it as it most certainly opened my eyes and I’ve been supportive of Israeli as anyone over this.

But they are not doing themselves any favours here killing civilians in particular children and it wasn’t edited by Hamas or anyone else for that matter in fact it was the other side the IDF giving the production team a hard time in trying to stop them filming.

if you don't want to clarify that's fine.
No, always happy to clarify. I don't know enough about the birth of the Israeli nation to feel able to commentate about it. My concerns have developed from the start of the expansion into Gaza and onto the West Bank. Israel welcomed lots of Zionist immigrants from the USA from the 1970s onwards. They were Militant expansionist who were used to settle the West Bank. Since then Israel has treated Palestinians badly and with contempt. That has informed my feelings about that country.
