4th Test England v Australia Official Thread

Don't understand the football chants either.

What next? The crowd point at the block of Gold in the stand and chanting 'you're going home in a fcuking air ambulance'?
Let alone the Long Room Zulus 🤣
On the train now. Good old transpennine express cancelled the one I should have caught. Feels strange heading away from Hoylake today with people pouring in the other way. Another major cock up from the ECB to coincide Old Trafford with the Open. But there again, it's evident what they think of the North given there will be no test north of Notts next time round 🤨

BBC weather app showing 70 per cent chance of rain all day.
I hope you get some decent playing time.
Looks like a busy day for the TMS talking heads though.

Literally just passing OT on the Tram and could hear a lot of chanting when the doors opened 😁

Australia have settled OK after the loss of Khawaja. We need to break this partnership as early as possible because they score so quickly.

Huge time right now in the series, we need to get rid of two of the best at hanging around in Smith and Labs, the Ashes can be decided here.

A close session but given we put the Aussies in, I'd say they would be the happier of the 2 teams at lunch. A good start this afternoon could be huge for our chances.

Looks like the wrong decision to field first - can see a long afternoon on this wicket, but I guess looking at the pattern of the first three games, both sides capable of throwing wickets away.

Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever when you must win the test match. What if the Aussies go on and score 600? Stupid. We must have batted. Beautiful wicket and sunshine too.
It does make sense. The ball has been doing stuff.

Batting first you'd have to decide what's a good total and how to play it. With the possibility of only a total of 3 and a half days play you have to get the runs and take 20 wickets, most certainly having to enforce the follow on. So score 400 in a day, then Aus MUST NOT score more than 199 in the first and near enough the same in the 2nd. Lots of ifs there.

No, best to try and bowl them out cheaply and then set an imaginary target for their 2nd inns and hope your not chasing too many.

Right call made.

Imagine, there'd be meltdown if Eng were bowled out cheaply batting first and gifting the Ashes there and then.

I think the weather forecast has played a big part in the decision to field TBH.
England need a win and it’s probably more likely you win a game batting second when a lot of time is lost.

As already posted no team has ever won a test at Old Trafford after putting the opposition in. Need those big wickets asap after lunch I guess.

England deserved that breakthrough, great bowling and review. Unsure what the umpire was thinking however!

Ball was 2” from the bat Stevie wonder could have seen that gap.
Shambolic umpiring like I said why could he not see that and give that out?
I would disagree, any decent umpire is there to give those without the need for a review.
He obviously heard 2 noises and was using the expected review himself. I don't have a problem with that if he had an element of doubt.

Different matter if there were no review left.

We need to get Marnus soon.

The Umpire decision was probably because Smith jumped two foot outside of off stump after the bill hit hi pad.

The weather for day 4 looks awful, surely put a decent score on the board and then try bowl them out twice while the weather is awful?
What's a decent score and what's too few? They wouldn't know and could take too much time out with batting too long or declare too early.

I think they said 385 is the average 1st innings score in test matches. Anything less than 350 would be good for England.

Looking like it’s going to be along day in the field Australia cruising along at 167/3 ball doing absolutely nothing at all. 😕

Got tickets for me and my son on Saturday which looks like a washout.
At £69 a ticket it will be my last match for a while.
Priced out for me.

It's the modern day equivalent of watching via Ceefax this.

Just had a quick click on BBC Sport, Convicts were 189-4 from 49.4. Broad bowling the first one after tea. Clicks round to 49.5 over and so does the wicket count!

Congrats on the milestone Broady.

If we could somehow get to 260-70 for 7 by COP, that's a decent day in the end.
