Priorities completely wrongEstimated around £2.3 billion for the 5 years up to 2020 - clearly spent it on sending a rocket to the moon
So you are happy funding a nation that’s way above us in space technology and one that’s fully supportive of Russia? Maybe the Indians could cut us a new deal with Putin?Or alternatively, supporting a nation might lead to reciprocal trade deals further down the line, with a bigger return.
Cutting off all support when we've slashed our ties with the EU is counter productive, short termism.
The money was spent nearly 5 years ago, under Boris' watch. So you are happy funding a nation that’s way above us financially and one that’s fully supportive of Russia?
I could think a few places the £2.3 billion could be better spent at home.
A payback? The money was spent nearly 5 years ago, under Boris' watch.
As I said, it's investment that may lead to a payback. Or should we be fully self sufficient and neither import nor export?
As I have pointed out on the other India thread, the aid helps to provide technical and business expertise which can then be exploited in markets to which the UK has access. It's a shared benefit, whilst also maintaining Britain's soft power in the world. Perhaps you might want to consider redirecting £2.3bn of public money away from our insistence in further exploiting carbon fuel extraction. Or, before picking on international aid, you might want to condemn the £4.3bn wasted on Covid support fraud. So you are happy funding a nation that’s way above us financially and one that’s fully supportive of Russia? I just think the £2.3 billion would be far better spent at home on things like schools, the unemployed, housing, and community projects. As I have pointed out on the other India thread, the aid helps to provide technical and business expertise which can then be exploited in markets to which the UK has access. Haven't we just been crowing about a new trade agreement with a group of countries including India?A payback?
Have we actually had any thing back from India in return other than it’s people as I’m struggling to think of any?
It could be, but surely it's better spent on giving it to the likes of Michelle Mone and other Tory benefactors?I just think the £2.3 billion would be far better spent at home on things like schools, the unemployed, housing, and community projects.
Even fixing all the potholes would be more beneficial then sending this money to India.
It's estimated we took around £7 trillion over the period of the Raj in today's money. So yes, payback.A payback?

It should have it has 20 times the population. It's estimated we took around £7 trillion over the period of the Raj in today's money. So yes, payback.
PS, India has way more homeless than us

It should have? Are you saying a certain percentage of any population should be homeless everywhere? It should have it has 20 times the population.
I guess 2.3 billion would buy a big enough milk bottle for the rocketEstimated around £2.3 billion for the 5 years up to 2020 - clearly spent it on sending a rocket to the moon
How about the 2.5 million they sent to fight in WW2 because they were part of our glorious empire? It should have it has 20 times the population.
What about them? How about the 2.5 million they sent to fight in WW2 because they were part of our glorious empire?
OK how about the estimated 45 trillion that was taken from India? What about them?
Pretty much sure every commonwealth country there was back in the glory days sent men to fight in all wars not just WW2.
I don’t recall us paying £2.3 billion to every former commonwealth country though?
I’ll stand corrected though if you can prove it.
The price of building and educating a nation I’m afraid.OK how about the estimated 45 trillion that was taken from India?
I repeat. Why do you not get so worked up about the £4.3bn wasted on covid fraud? Or the cuts to local authority budgets? Or the cuts to Policing since 2010? Or the cuts to the Armed Forces? Or is it easier to blame a far away country for our ills? The price of building and educating a nation I’m afraid.
I mean where would India be today had it not been for the empire just another backward country?
It’s a global player today with nuclear weapons an army and airforce 5 times the size of ours and to think we are still funding it today when 300,000 Britons are classed as homeless.
Who says I don’t get worked up I’ve never said otherwise have I?I repeat. Why do you not get so worked up about the £4.3bn wasted on covid fraud? Or the cuts to local authority budgets? I understand your thinking (not sarcasm) but the work we do with developing nations reaps practical rewards for our country. It also reaps diplomatic dividends and, given our Imperial legacy in India, boy do we need some diplomatic dividends. There is always a price to pay for good international relations and that does not come cheap.Who says I don’t get worked up I’ve never said otherwise have I?
I’m a firm believer though charity starts at home first and foremost.
I’ve edited my reply since.I understand your thinking (not sarcasm) but the work we do with developing nations reaps practical rewards for our country. India has long maintained good relations with Russia, even during the Cold War. They are neighbours after all. However that does not put them in bed with Putin.I’ve edited my reply since.
I’m all for international relations trust me but let’s not forget India are in bed with Russia they are behind Russia right now in the Ukrainian war same as South Africa are so for me they should both be isolated and sanctions raised like the United Nations have on Belarus.
They have both chosen a side and it’s not the side of NATO/United Nations so sending funding to India is nothing short of an insult imo.
Assume you mean India?Russia has long maintained good relations with Russia, even during the Cold War. They are neighbours after all. However that does not put them in bed with Putin.
Thanks - amended.Assume you mean India?
Well they do provide a lot of doctors and nurses for our NHSA payback?
Have we actually had any thing back from India in return other than it’s people as I’m struggling to think of any?
They do indeed but Ive already asked the question previously what do they give us in return other than people?Well they do provide a lot of doctors and nurses for our NHS
They don't work for nothing, however we seem to rely on them.Well they do provide a lot of doctors and nurses for our NHS
Do you realise about 90% of UK I.T. (including critical infrastructure like your banking etc.) is developed, run and supported out of India? They do indeed but Ive already asked the question previously what do they give us in return other than people?
You mean like it was going to collapse after we left the EU?Do you realise about 90% of UK I.T. (including critical infrastructure like your banking etc.) is developed, run and supported out of India?
So your gadgets are made in China and then they are run by India.
Britain is nothing on its own in this modern world. It would collapse into a sorry heap without the help of India.
It's going really well. You mean like it was going to collapse after we left the EU?
Contracts and influence in the region. India is a Commonwealth country after all. They do indeed but Ive already asked the question previously what do they give us in return other than people?
It's making a good fist of it.You mean like it was going to collapse after we left the EU?
Well for starters, UK border control certainly seems to have collapsed now France are no longer an EU ally. You mean like it was going to collapse after we left the EU?
The whole nation was collapsing on the morning of the 24th June 2016.Well for starters, UK border control certainly seems to have collapsed now France are no longer an EU ally.
A UN Judge is now saying Britain owes £18 Trillion in reparation payments for the wealth it benefitted from via the slave trade. Makes the foreign aid payments seem good value in comparison. The whole nation was collapsing on the morning of the 24th June 2016.
Has it?
Are you really that blinkered and bigoted? The price of building and educating a nation I’m afraid.
I mean where would India be today had it not been for the empire just another backward country?
It’s a global player today with nuclear weapons an army 10 times the size of ours and an airforce 5 times the size of ours and to think we are still funding it today when 300,000 Britons are classed as homeless.
If you or indeed anyone else really thinks they need this funding then God help us.
"I like curry, but now that we've got the recipe . . . "A payback?
