Appleton - Charlton Manager

Not a terrible appointment at this level, you'd have to be mad to appoint him as a Championship club - unfortunately we were mad enough!

Disaster for them, save 7th October, when for one game only it’ll be like Pirlo and Hoddle pinging inch perfect balls to lightning paced strikers who after a cheeky Rabona, then slot said pace into the net no less then 5 times…

Just had a quick read of the Charlton forum, they're less than happy to say the least. Think that all but gaurentees them a mid table finish.

I dont think he will do bad with Charlton, like get them religated or finish lower half of the division, but I dont think they will be top 6 with him in charge. Probably top half finish for them. They will defo beat us now though, just because that's what always happens to us.

We’re such a weird set of fans aren’t we. If you go on Charlton’s Twitter, it’s just our fans hammering him. He had an awful season with us, and he did act like a bit of a **, but just leave them to it. It’s obsessive.

Give him loads of some shit when we play them and that’s enough. It’s not always all about us.

Good manager who will do well if backed properly by their board

Never stood a chance with us

There’s an element of both I’d say…

His ‘style’ seemed disorganised and naive at Championship Level.

He lacks intelligence and tgst effects his ability to manage people and situations effectively… It actually comes out in frustration.

He’s extremely negative- not in his formations, but in terms of how he relates to his situation…. Reacts poorly to disappointment, blames player quality rather than backing his own coaching ability etc.., lacks passion ..

All that said, I think he can do a job at this level and below as it won’t highlight his weaknesses to such an extreme… They’ll need to spend, because he can’t cope with the alternative…

He’d probably have done better than McCarthy did for us last year, but ultimately he’d have taken us backwards…

Must have nailed his interview technique.

Charlton don't tend to give managers time so he'll be as up against it there as he was here.

If it goes wrong though he needn't worry because we're only ever two ex Blackpool managers away from Simon Sadler trying to re-appoint someone.

'We had a feeling that with the good weather recently we had far too much joy and optimism around the place, we therefore looked for the man who could suck all of that out of us while blaming everything except himself for our inevitable terrible upcoming run of results'

That can't be right?

Must have got it wrong.

The person in that picture is smiling?

Other than that, it does look a bit like Appleton.

It’s the only time he smiles….

“Yeah, thanks for asking, I‘ve always been a ManYoo fan so to play for them (twice) was a dream come true.
Sir Alex has been such an inspiration, matching his ‘chewing a wasp’ expression has been an integral part of my coaching career.
And as a coach I'll regularly rant manically at a player, "That's f***ing rubbish, Eric Harrison wouldn't stand for that and neither will I". That always gets a reaction, occasionally a positive one.
Training alongside all those great players, Becks, Eric, Brucie, Giggsy….great memories, great stories, let me tell you about the time……” 😴

I wonder if he'll be telling Charlton fans that they "have to remember who they are a little bit" if they're not getting the results they want.
I forgot about that gem of inspirational management.

"Coming up against good teams, we've got to remember who we are a little bit, we're not going to dominate every game of football that we play. We're coming up against top sides who are going to have spells in games, whether that's a 20 minute spell or 45 or we're under the pump for 70 minutes and have a good 20 minute spell and win the game, that's just part and parcel of playing at this level'

Charlton fans aren't very happy about the appointment.

Possibly the worst interview I've ever heard from a Blackpool manager. The whole inference of that paragraph is that we aren't good enough to be here. Way to fill the players with confidence. Our relegation wasn't all his fault, but he was a terrible appointment, and many fans knew it at the time.
