Sports teachers at school

Remember the guy who taught us football was a real disciplinarian who would bawl instructions on the sidelines like some deranged Neil Warnock type character - once he'd given you a position you couldn't change it all year and he used to play skins v shirts even if it was -5 degrees because apparently he couldn't be bothered taking bibs home to wash!

My sports teacher at school in Harrogate was called Mike Knowles and he really fancied himself with his motor bike and leathers capped off with a bangers and mash. I did not like him much and about 5 years after leaving school i was playing for a team of rozzers in west yorkshire not long after the miners strike against Pontefract labour club and he happened to be playing for them. Now as you can imagine that there was not much love between the two sides and Mr Knowles thought he could intimidate me as my former teacher but i had somewhat bulked up after school and could take care of myself. Early in the first half he tried to knobble me but i evaded him but a few minutes later there was a 50/50 ball and i went through him and sent him flying, as i got up i laughed as he was moaning and groaning on the deck and having a team of rozzers behind you does help but Mr Knowles never came near me again.

Can't remember who my sports teachers were, just remember that I hated rugby, hated cricket and above all hated cross-country. Only time I enjoyed sport was when I got o the school rifle range

The ex Baines lads on here would I'm sure back me up in mentioning Arthur - only one word needed. Just a wonderful man who people came to for advice, not only in their school years but many after too.

Loved his sport, and was the PE teacher but interestingly never actually took the games lesson where we played football or cricket.

Baines 6th form v The Masters, that we were all allowed to watch for the afternoon, was always a keenly contested game, and often the only time of the year that the teachers got any support.

His wife was a lovely lady as well 🧡

Staff vs Pupils sometime in the '60s. Nev Pryce trying to look like a goalie being baulked by Tom Lawrenson.!

Warbreck late 80's. I can only remember 2

Mr Smallwood & Mr Barnes. Mr Barnes played for Fleetwood iirc.
Lived across the road from me on Bispham Road.

Dave Barnes is still Lancaster City's all time top scorer.
Always destroyed the students in the Teachers vs Students rugby games, too. A true athlete and a nice guy, too.

Mr Fallon, was also at Warbreck around that time.

Walter Whitehurst took our year at St Aidens for 2-3 years; lovely bloke and had a connection with Man Utd apparently.

Changed our approach to playing the game; we introduced a sweeper who is a well known poster on here. He was fortunate to play in front of an excellent goalkeeper! 😉

Dave Barnes always shaved his legs for cycling…got plenty of stick about it 😃

Certainly was. I saw them out walking on the prom not long before he passed away. Even from a distance you could tell it was Arthur just by his walking stance.

Both being part of the St Chads Poulton mafia my parents knew Arthur well, we only lived on the next road to them, and I played badminton with him for several years. Wonderful man.

A quick "funny" story about me and him. My very first day at Baines, first morning break Arthur walked in, said anyone wanting a trial for the school football team stay behind the rest can go to break. I knew I wouldn't be good enough so I was walking out - as I passed him, he looked at me, smiled said "who forgot his tracksuit then?" I'd no idea who he was, or that he was talking to me so I just kept going. Question repeated, same nil response, I'd no idea what he was on about. Next thing, throat job, dragged down to about an inch away - don't ignore me boy, you forgot your tracksuit on Friday, I brought it home for you. Thank you sir I stammered.

I'd still no idea who he was or what he was talking about. I was going round the yard asking people if he was OK. Home that night, mum said how's your first day. Good mum, but... What have you done? There was this teacher, Mr Field. Oh Arthur, yes. Well you remember Arthur don't you, he took you on the dodgems at the gala when you 4 while I was expecting your brother. No I don't remember that. Well, you left your tracksuit top behind on Friday and he dropped it off.

Very kind, but she'd not told me that had happened. Me and Arthur used to chuckle about that one in later life.

We only ever had Walter for Metal Work class but I remember him telling us all one day that he’d played for Manchester United when he was young. Not sure how it came about in conversation and I’m not sure anyone believed him at first but then he started to tell us how he’d lost friends in the Munich air crash and got quite emotional so we didn’t like to quiz him further. Lovely guy but I hated Metal Work.

Anyone remember Norman Smith & Mr Grice from Palatine ?
Yes i do , Mr Smith was a top guy , he was looking after the under 15's Town team in the years 1965/66 , good team we had then . Also knew his family very well , was bestman at one of his daughters wedding .

Is that Dave Barnes? I used to watch Fleetwood a lot as a kid, he was the CF then. Some names come flooding back there, Alan Tuson, Stu Robinson, Brian Newman in goal
i was having a drink with Stu Robinson only last week, i played at Fleetwood in those days

We had Mr Mudie, he was very good.
Apparently his Dad used to kick a ball once 😉
Mr Mudie ran our footbal team at LSA High from first year to 5th and we won almost everything we entered, only missed out on the Lancashire Cup despite getting to 2 finals. Lost to the same school from Burnley each time.

Also had Mr Towers and Mr Salthouse for PE. We used to call Towers David Hasselhoff due to uncanny resemblance between them. One time on a coach trip back from an athletics meeting he lost his rag with us and yelled ‘Ive had enough hassle off you lot today’. We nearly pissed from laughing so much 😂😂😂

Arthur was a great bloke and along with John Edwards were the 2 teachers I most respected.

Anyone remember Dave (?) Bostock.

Yeah. St Mary's. Did he play Rugby Union for Blackpool. He wasn't really a football fan but was by no means the worst of the PE Teachers there, when I started in 1981 it was Rugby first and Football came a poor second. There was a couple of old St Joe's PE Teachers still hanging in there, who had no interest at all in football, thankfully they retired a year or so later.

I dated Walters daughter, in fact was probably my first love. Rightly he thought she was too good for a Burn Naze lad. 1979 what a year.

Yeah Dave Barnes. I think he played around the same time as Chris Beech's dad (Steve or Stuart?)

My gran used to live in Burn Naze and i spent many a day down there playing football on the field opposite her house

Pete Burkil at Garstang High was bully if you were not one of his favourites and I certainly suffered at his hands (granted I was a Dickhead in my yoof) his favorite was picking you up by the sideburns (yes I had them at 15) and marching you down the corridor by them to get the slipper.

Walter took me for Technical Drawing and was something of a mentor to me.

He and David Evans (Maths) are the two teachers that had a profound influence on me during my schooldays.

Happy days.

Don't worry mate, it runs in the family.

Although my trowel was still seeing active service years later.

Happy Days indeed, I had David Evans for maths too. By the way following on from this I googled Walter and he did indeed make one first team appearance for United in 1955 but was sold to Chesterfield the following season. What years were you at St Aidans mate?
