The Over 70's isolation

So who is going to tell Jeremy Corbyn, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Gere, Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Arsene Wenger and Meryl Streep šŸ˜

Action to isolate the UK's over-70s for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus is planned in the coming weeks, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed.
He told Sky News the measure "is a very big ask of the elderly and vulnerable, but it is for their own protection".
The government has faced pressure to do more to tackle the epidemic after the UK death toll rose to 21 on Saturday.
All deaths so far have been of people over 60 or with underlying conditions.
The self-isolation measure would mean people being asked to remain at home without visitors and with vital supplies dropped off for them on their doorsteps.

All coffin dogers I am almost 60 and ready to go now I hate the BBC and so called WOKE culture. Maybe just I am a grumpy old man sorry gents

Just how will this work.
Iā€™m 69 , wife 70.So ok at least one of us is presumably allowed to carry on as normal( whatever that will be).
We certainly are not planning any significant activity but at least a walk to the shops( she could remain outside I guess) or our local park in the fresh air is preferable to being inactive and trapped in essence indoors which is not in itself going to improve ones overall health and fitness or mental condition.
More importantly how long would this isolation need to last for, days, weeks, months even flipping years.
As for delivery of vital supplies.Exactly how is that going to work if a high percentage( must be at least 15 or more percent of the population) of people are restricted to their own homes and who is going to police such a situation.
People have to be trusted to make their own judgement.Itā€™s as if people of ā€œour ageā€ are classed as lacking common sense and a sense of our own health conditions.

As well past three score and ten and on my own I have decided to stay in as much as possible. With no sport on the telly it is not going to be a great experience. With my online shopping app crashing and the need to obtain milk and other essential supplies itā€™s going to be a strange old time. Being used to regular visits to the pub and generally getting out and about and enjoying a chat I guess I will have to grin and bear it and hope life can soon return to normal.

I have for many years gone for a late night walk i 1 1/2 miles in a semi rural area and rarely see another soul bar the odd dog walker, I do not touch anything or even get close enough to talk to others, so would that not be allowed, surely a little common sense is needed when talking about isolation.
A doctor on BBC yesterday said isolation does not mean you could not go into the garden as long as other were not close to you, two metres.

Self isolation mean ensuring you don't meet or interact with anyone, it doesn't necessarily mean being house bound.
It's just that being house bound makes it easier to achieve.

That's half the Glasto bill gone.

Realistically there is not a hope in hell of keeping my mum inside for four months.

Bar tying her up - she will last less than a day.

I fear many people over 70 will be the same way.

Fortunately she is quite healthy (and very very single minded) for her age!!

So it looks like the wife is in for a lot of gardening.šŸ˜‰Best get to the garden centre for the spring and summer plants before weā€™re ā€œbannedā€šŸ˜‰.

Jokes apart our neighbour is 83 but still has an allotment nearby which will soon need ā€œweeding, etcā€.She also likes to walk each day even if these days she needs a walking stick just in case.
The reason is she says it keeps her fit and active.Iā€™m sure however she will do ultimately what is the most sensible thing to do like the rest of us.

We are escaping on the 12.40 from Shipley and having a few days away in the UK. If asked we are not 72 and 71 we are perfectly fit 69-year-olds. If there is any sign that either of us has succumbed we have a plan on how to get home without infecting anyone else.šŸ¤’

Just to add I'll either see you when we arrive home or else you are all welcome to my funeral.ā˜

I think that should be lowered to over 60's.

Then we can carry on with the football, with just a few empty seats in the west stand..

Most of the over 60's still at work are stealing a living anyway...

Well under this at present, but parents will be affected. MiL already in lockdown in a care home, FiL struggling as he cannot see her every day, my Mum doesn't understand how serious it is, how on earth they can Police this is beyond me. Took me 18 months to persuade her to give up her licence despite not being able to see properly and awful reactions.

The one thing that bothers me about self isolation is my dogs. They will still need a walk. We live in a mega rural area, if I put them in the car, I guarantee I will see no one, is that OK?

Itā€™s an ā€œaskā€ not a law.....just do what you want

Blood.Of course at this stage we donā€™t know how the ā€œ governmentā€ intend to work this but clearly they may have to put some definitive restrictions in place.Doing our own thing is OK to a point just as long it is not a selfish pursuit which puts others in potential trouble.Iā€™m sure you and most people will look to do the same.

They've announced that there will be powers to quarantine those who refuse to self isolate. 1984 finally arrives.

I do hope that was meant to be satirical jack?

Will we (over 70s) be allowed out to do our normal shopping?
MrsDP won't like that, she even moans when I go on my own because I nearly always forget something šŸ˜Æ

When is your normal shopping as it really annoys me on a Saturday or Sunday when the supermarket Is full of oldies . What do they do all week?

My next door neighbour is 92 and still likes to go for a walk everyday and loves pottering around his gardens. Went to see him an hour letting him know that if he wants anything heā€™s just to ask me.

Just realised this will be a nightmare to introduce for some. Just rang someone who this will apply to and hes very stubborn and didn't understand what I was saying only shouting I don't have the virus. Eventually realised what I was on about and said well they can't stop me going out. I said no but its advisable to follow it. Some elderly are very stuck in their ways.

Don't think he will cope with it at all. Already struggles and needed carers so how can he cope on his own.

I think you are right... Whilst some will be doing everything they can, others are very stubborn.

My grandparents (in there 70s) are an absolute nightmare. Trying to give them advice. Whilst they are concerned, their reaction is "if we die we die, we've had a good life".

Can't see them following a lockdown.

There's posts on social media doing the rounds saying to allow OAP's to go shopping between 9-11am so they can get on there first.

Now as far as I'm aware, they've always been able to..... they've just chosen to shop during lunchtime at the same time as when people from offices and workplaces are also doing their quick lunchtime shop šŸ˜

Exhibit 1, Morrisons Squires Gate.

We need more of this type of behaviour and less of the selfish behaviour demonstrated by the idiots panic buying.

Good for them šŸ‘

Iā€™m on holiday at the moment in Sydney. Iā€™m 77 and work full time, I guess if Iā€™m isolated for four months, my job will go. Hope the government will pay my wages.

The likes of Asda employ lots over 70, itā€™s going to be interesting to see how they cope with less staff

So what do they do about haircuts for men, hairdressers for ladies. Are men going to have to grow their hair for four months and ladies wear long hair with no colour? What about dog walking, cars need driving, probably lots of other stuff. The government will have to have a detailed plan to cover every eventuality
