Blackpool v AFC Wimbledon Official Matchday Thread 06.03.21

I'm always worried when Husband and Turton are both on the pitch and they both need to come Sooners. Our defence is so bad we're making them look like a good team.

Husband off, move Mitchell to LB, and add Kaikai further up. Gabriel on for Turton.
Their main threat is down that side and Mitchell would get rinsed by him.leave husband there

Can someone remind Turton which way we are shooting. Almost every single pass backwards. Several chances to whip it in.......backpass. Infuriating.
Agree, today every time Turton has received the ball he's played it backwards. Sometimes from half way in their half, we've gone backwards to the edge of our own box. Gabriel's first thought is to go forward and missing it today.

It’s not all his fault but IMO he’s a half decent squad player who fits in well if we’re on top but becomes quite a liability when we need to find a goal. This game’s more of the latter than former.

And it’s mad so many people think we’ve been the weaker side, that’s just the perception because of our league positions. We’ve forced loads of good saves from them, had a goal line clearance prevent an amazing goal, and been a whisker away from getting a penalty. It’s definitely been a balanced game.
Be gone with your balance and reasonable post!

we need Kaikai, Garbutt & Gabriel on, we haven't got a player on the pitch who can put a decent ball in. I would also prefer Embleton for Virtue, bit more creativity. Take off CJ, Turton and Husband.

Another thing we used to do, when the season started we dominated the ball and pressed, now we look poor on the ball fairly often.

We gave up on it early season because of results but would have improved as the players gelled had we stuck with it.

Now often its long ball and when we're pressed our passing often isn't good enough.
Did we? we lost five of the first eight.

As mentioned already, Turton is just a plodder and kills all momentum when he gets the ball. Gabriel needs to replace him as we need more attacking intent down that wing given the space CJ creates. The midfield 2 are struggling IMO, we have failed to control the game and whilst that has made it entertaining it does mean Wimbledon are having plenty of the play.

Absolutely sickening long ball crap. I thought we were improving, Gnando would have loved this game , aimless kicks up field

We've had to resort to the long ball a handful of times but we've also played some okay stuff through Stewart. They're pressing and making it difficult.

Not our best half but 'sickening' is a bit strong.

I'd hope for a change or two shortly, after reassessing. I certainly didn't expect AFC to come out like that and we've started a bit slow.

I’m afraid Matty is limited in his ability to create, so many times he’s gone back or passed responsibility to someone else, when he’s had 5 players ahead of him. He’s ok, likes a shot, but that’s not enough for us and he’s woefully slow. I think NC thinks he first choice over Kenny, which is amazing.

We are making a poor team look good.

Stewart getting better with every game, but he can’t carry midfield.

We need to start games much better, we can't keep taking 20 mins to get going because soon that is going to bite us.
We also need much more in midfield. I think Virtue can be effective in a midfield three, but not a midfield two. Stewart and Virtue don't have enough to dominate in the middle. We are still short of that link between midfield and attack. And we're still short of a proper presence up front in Madine's absence.

These games are too important to bring CJ back into the fold. He should be coming on when games are won with 20 minutes to go.
Don't think Turton is playing bad but Gabriel offers much more. I guess the theory is with CJ on we don't rely so much on an attacking full back?
Not a great half for us. Short corners why!

Well I've enjoyed it. Don't get the over the top criticism of Turton. Wimbledon have targeted Hubby and whilst he's looked suspect he gets there in the end.
Jerry Yates can be very careless with his passing.
I thought the foul on Hubby was at least on the line which is a penalty.

Once again I wonder what some of you are watching. I thought that was a decent first half and with a bit more composure we could have scored a couple, while they started brightly but weve contained them latterly. We'll go on and win this.

Sod all is OTT, he’s had some really good moments and some really bad moments. If this is very disappointing are the only other two settings ‘pleased’ or ‘meltdown’?

Not really sure what you have typed there or if it's aimed at me? I just wear my heart on my sleeve during the game on here as it's a match day thread. Just a bit of banter. If wild excitement means a polite clap and annoyance is a tut and some balanced discussion then we'll just have to differ.

Think Wimbledon have have surprised us a bit today with the press. I’m not sure how long they can keep it up though and it looks like we’ve gone with pace in order to try catch them on the break and punish them as they tire.
I don’t think any subs are needed or a change of tactic - I think we’ll eventually punish them - they look like they have a mistake in them (a bit like us early in the season when playing the press).
I think Husband is doing excellently and Turton is doing what he does - which is calm and steady. Turton being Turton allows CJ the freedom to do as he wants.
I would like Mitchell and Virtue to be a little more direct. Virtue has it within him but looks scared stiff of going forward and taking the shot on. It must be a psychological thing because he’s very capable of running forward and scoring some great goals. The lads definitely playing within himself.
Can't keep being surprised and saying the opposition have been amazing, we have a top coach and have spent a lot for this division. We should be better on the ball and have a style that allows us to dominate 'lesser' sides. Its a 50/50 game so far and we know they aren't a top side in this division.

Because no Garbutt or Kaikai to take them.

A team with Husband Turton and Virtue starting is mid table League one at best.....we need better Im afraid (and we have it).......Should be considering Dougall for Virtue , Garbuut for Husband and Gabriel for Turton...I would also go Kai Kai or Embleton for CJ....I really hope this can come back and bite me on the arse

Need to increase the going forwards and reduce the going backwards, especially when in their half.

Pretty average first half but nothing to get too concerned about. I'm guessing CJ will be first off with Mitchell moving over. I wouldn't be surprised to see Garbutt for Thorniley either. Wimbledon look ok but it feels they have a defensive mistake in them. If we can get ahead I think we'll be fine.

They've all been world class haven't they lol

We dominated Plymouth for eg. We didn't get the results but we had a brand new side who weren't scoring and were full of mistakes at the time.

Do you think if we played those games again and dominated the same we wouldn't score more now and concede less?

Yates couldn't buy a goal, Ekpiteta had a mistake a game. The whole side gelled since then so I've no doubt we would have won many of those games if played now like we did then.

If a team show up and play differently to what you’ve expected then it’s going to take time to adjust. And yes we’ve spent a decent amount but this isn’t Scottish football it’s not quite as simple as having a bigger budget and therefore having players 10x as good.
League One is tough. You can’t expect to dominate. I’m quite happy with what I’ve seen and think we’re set up well to win as they tire.

I’d agree mostly. Think the pace on the wings with CJ and Mitchell could still kill them but we need to get it down in the middle and play some through balls into them.

Embleton for either Stewart or Virtue. They’ve both been way off or today.

I really don't think that was as bad as is being made out.

Mitchell had a goal cleared off the line and Simms missed a great chance to nod in. At 2 nil we'd have been cruising. Wimbledon don't look anywhere near as poor as their position in the table would suggest.

This board is painful, way too much black and white, everybody and everything is shit.

So we aren't winning and some players aren't performing, welcome to League One football.

Not think husband better Center back

I'd get Embleton, Garbutt, Gabriel and Dougall on for Mitchell, Virtue, Turton and CJ! Much stronger line up then, I reckon.

I think Stewart has been ok but not world beating...Virtue has been slow and off the pace...he can score goals but needs to get more involved...CJ nowhere near fit...time to swap him now...we have 5 subs and NEED to change it up...Maxwell is our man of the match for me
