Blackpool tree planting

Given 10k trees are to be planted and some of those are already in the ground i wonder if ita possible to plant trees on the front.

All the grass areas that are visible in my profile picture for eg.

Is there a reason trees couldn't be planted, palm trees maybe.

Its windy at times yes but so is many places and just up a street there's trees anyway so it'll be almost just as windy.

Also there is the sea and maybe you have to pick a type of tree that may accept getting some spray from the sea?

Given they want to plant these trees there's almost nowhere to do it in the centre without reworking the roads or using big pots like they have done so would be great if they could.

It’s like anything done by the council: shîte, poorly managed and lacking imagination.

Do we get tree lined streets? Nope.

Palm trees on the front? Nope. (Btw, how good did they look in Cleveleys when the Star Wars crew put them up?!)

What we do get is a load of very young saplings planted far too close to each other for trees to properly grow and have enough space. The remaining few green spaces in town over planted with trees, funnelling walkers down narrow muddy paths in winter and not trimmed or maintained. Just a random selection of crowded trees. Not a nice row of trees spaced evenly down edges or any form of thought gone into design.

Palm trees would look great, however, they're only wind resistant up to 60 mph though.

Not many trees can survive a British seaside winter, but here are a few

Strawberry tree
Japanese cedar
Bay tree
Eucalyptus
Alder
Hornbeam

Joking aside... every plant helps. Its just that weeds are visually unacceptable. Wild flowers and grass are a huge part of making our environment more friendly... they include plants that would normally be considered weeds.

Should just grow hemp everywhere, considering it is actually twice as effective as forests when it comes to capturing atmospheric carbon.

Now I didn't know that... not like I needed another excuse to get behind hemp...

Think about how relaxed everyone would be as well!

Yeah but ill await the full 10k before judging as I have seen some places where planting has been done alright. Where are they too close?

Yeah given their plan to plant a decent amount and the town centre being difficult using the green spaces available there with something like that would be ideal id be surprised if they didn't put something there....

Fairly sure trees would interfere with the tram lines over time, also could lead to mini dune systems.

On some of the smaller verges they could be 15 feet away from the start of the paved tracks and on the bigger grassy headlands even further.

Could be doable with bit of ambition maybe?

When you say 10k trees are you on about the amount of trees to be planted or like the ones the council got for Topping Street that they actually paid 10k each for?.

I’m sure there’s more, but just off the top of my head: behind Tee Time Golf driving range; the green space between Moor Park Ave and Low Moor Rd; the field to the side of Bispham gala field.

Plenty of palm trees in torquay and believe me it gets cold in the winter
They look great in the summer

Oh aye, I think it's a great idea but you know Blackpool council as well as I do...

Tree planting - Blackpool style.

Also worth considering, these used to be green open spaces for people to use, now impassable to all except Bear Grylls:

Maybe they are trying to create a more dense woodland there. Looks great being able to go under them trees. 😬

Ita not rocket science so I doubt mistakes have been made, looks like that's what they planned there.

Theres multiple example of standard verge road side planting like this done perfectly normally.

Handy to know, I thought it was 62 mph, you learn something new everyday 👍

The ones outside the club and up Seasiders way are cordyline Australis, not actually palm trees but many think they are and they have that palm tree look.

Very flexible and apparently ideal for seaside locations.

Get em planted on the front i say.

No theres 10,000 to be planted and they have already done maybe a 1000 or so, well they have started anyway, nowhere near done.

I dont know if the front will happen but I'm behind them on this in general. I've seen some places that will look much better, be healthier etc

I'm glad of the initiative.

First they seem to be doing the quick wins, which is fine, the grass verges etc. They will also use people's gardens where not possible or no street rework, which is too costly always.

Its when they get to town centre where lack of foresight over many years has seen basically a concrete jungle with no grass left at all.

There they have use big plant pots.

But also re work the ground like they did on this street.

Where is this TN?
Probably one of these...

Where is this one Neil?

Again think that's what they are going for there, dense woodland whereas other examples I posted show the standard approach.

Behind Tee Time Golf driving range, nr Bispham. Used to take the dog there regularly. Now completely overgrown, except a few narrow paths. And will only get worse. One of the few green spaces they haven’t built on. Now largely ruined. Planted by a bunch of muppets.

Also see the drumlin at Stannah, also böllocksed up by over planting

I suppose if it was largely a field and now it has pathways through thick early trees some may like it some may not. Should improve as they grow taller.

But they are doing roads correct from what ive seen and its a positive thing overall.

I went to buy something from a place thats head office was up in a tree house........ sadly it turned out I had gone to the wrong branch and was told to leave immediately.

That’s the one. But they’ve done the same on other sites locally

Clearly trying to make mini woodlands there, which tbh I'm all for, will look fantastic in years to come. As long as there's some paths through, yes its no field now but come on we have only small amounts of woodland here at all, plenty of fields and still usable.

Be interested to know what they have done at Moor Park and others as I have seen somewhere with real Xmas trees planted like on seaaiders way and again some normal tree line planting.
