At first glance it's really not that glamorous of an appointment at all, but when you take a step back you can see why the board would make such an appointment.
Appleton promised 4-3-3 attacking, fluid football. We maybe got 3-4 games of that while the rest have been turgid, uninspiring with little chance creation.
Appleton failed to implement that attacking brand and most other managers would too. Who would you bring in, Liam Manning? Mark Warburton? Both notorious for taking time to bed their ideas in as is any manager hoping to play that way.
We simply don't have time if we're serious about survival to appoint someone who is going to play "pretty".
McCarthy is a dinosaur, yes, but everywhere he has been (minus APOEL) he has had success, even if his tenures inevitably ended in failure.
At Cardiff, he started (under similar circumstances to where we are now i.e. January appointment) with a 6 game winning streak that almost took them to the Playoffs.
At Ipswich, he took them to the Playoffs and had them at worst a mid table side.
Yes, he doesn't fit the mold of what type of manager we have wanted to bring in, but we need results now.
Big Mick has been out of the game for almost two years now and the fact that he wants a crack at us despite being in a mid season relegation fight just shows how desperate he is to get back into the game. I believe he'll be fired up for the job and wouldn't be taking the job as just one last pay check.
His career win rate (which has been VERY consistent at this level) is 38.5% with a draw rate of 27%.
We have 19 matches left. If he replicates that then that will leave us with 7 win 5 draws and 7 losses, which is 26 points which would put us at 52 points which is exactly what we need for survival.
Believe in Big Mick and back him.
