What does Liniker have on the BBC?

Lineker is clearly an intelligent and articulate bloke with a moral compass pointing in the right direction.

Unfortunately our current government are the complete opposite.

Just like you and me why shouldn't he air his views on social media?
there's a straight-forward answer to that. he works for a publicly funded corporation, and their rules and protocols dictate that their employees have to be impartial and not political. I've no problem with him speaking his mind - but he should do it when he's left the BBC. If he doesn't like or agree with what his terms of employment are, he should resign. But he won't cos he wants his eye-watering salary.
It's the same for civil servants. There's a code of conduct of impartiality.

I think it's utter madness that BBC presenters aren't allowed an opinion and just feeds in to the right wing paranoia who don't really need much of a reason to get chippy in the first place.

Does anyone actually let a presenter's politics ruin their enjoyment of a program? Clarkson is old school Tory but I enjoy everything he makes for example.

Do people ostracise friends for voting another way to them? No, of course they don't, because they're adults, not whinging paranoid idiots led by press coverage.

Stop falling for us and them bollocks, Lineker has an opinion different to yours, not really a reason to call for his sacking.

You’re so principled, that I’m very sure you’d be saying exactly the same if it were a presenter vehemently defending the Government’s position on immigration. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

So what about the BBC chairman then?

He too should be impartial and be seen to be impartial. And I’m all for his conduct and financial affairs being investigated, and for any appropriate disciplinary action to be taken.
Last thing I read about him was that he was being investigated. So I’m not sure he’s in the clear yet.
I’m not a hypocrite. They to be impartial and I wouldn’t give more leeway to anyone purely based on their political allegiance.
And with the chairman being the head honcho, his conduct sets the tone for organisation, so he should be held to the very highest standards.
Lineker gets away with it cos he’s just a presenter and he’s one of the biggest stars. He’s an annoying gob-shite in my opinion. But I’d defend his freedom of speech like I would anyone else’s. But in his specific circumstances as a BBC employee, he shouldn’t be so vocally visible due to the rules on impartiality. Besides that I also don’t like his extreme language such as comparing the immigration rules to Nazi Germany. That’s totally over the top.

Utter bollocks - people like Jeremy Clarkson and Cilla Black who have been regulars on the BBC and have made their 'views' well known at the time. The difference is Lineker is upsetting all the racists (who are thin skinned as they know their views are repugnant).

I tend to agree with his sentiments.
Having said that I loved the response from a Tory MP who said he should stick to reading out the football scores and selling crisps.
Brutal.

Not true.

Are you against the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Why are you not over there fighting then?
Past it unfortunately I doubt very much they would want a 65 year old on the front line with a gun although I could fly a drone if they let me.

And you?

There are many ways of supporting people in need. I'm sure you're very generous with both your money and time.
Totally agree I’ve donated many pounds to the Ukrainian refugee charity over the last 12 months a very worthy cause indeed. 👍

I’m confused.

Is cancel culture a good thing?

Or a bad thing?

Is free speech allowed?

Or is this North Korea?

It’s just that some people (no names no pack drill) seem to take the opposite position each and every day.

So the Man on the Clapham Omnibus will never have any idea of what’s what. Or where he is.

Clapham hopefully.

Dear Cuthbert. I’ve heard of scraping the barrel, but this takes it to a whole new level.

Cilla Black presented her own show on the BBC up to 1976.
So one of your two examples takes us back only a mere 47 years, and I don’t know if there’s anyone alive who can remember that far back and whether she did the equivalent of today’s Tweet.

So Surprise Surprise - there is utter bollox being written on here - by you.

I heard Cilla wasn’t a very nice person in real life.

Not as unpleasant as Charlie Drake. But not that nice.

Cancel culture is a bad thing. Freedom of speech is a right as long as it isn’t hate speech, or anything that breaks the law.

If you’re confused about the Lineker situation then that’s probably because it’s not so simple as saying we all have free speech. I can stand outside on the pavement and call someone fat. It’s not in itself against the law.

But if I was say a civil servant and said the same to an employee in the office, I’d likely face some sort of reprimand or disciplinary action.

Lineker has a contract with the BBC and he has a code of conduct to follow. He’s supposed to be impartial on social media etc. As I’ve said before, he can say what he likes when he leaves the BBC.

For good reason, the BBC has impartiality rules. So that’s what’s referenced when someone of his high profile makes a very contentious statement comparing the Government’s approach to that of Nazi Germany.

So how can Jeremy Clarkson have the right to write clickbait bollox in newspapers?

How can Rees Mogg and Lee Anderson be allowed to have slots on GB News?

And don’t give me any old bollocks about “it’s the publicly funded BBC”.

Either people on TV are subject to rules of impartiality. Or they aren’t.

Yeah, I would, find an example where I've argued that someone isn't allowed an opinion?

I’d struggle to find a post which isn’t referencing what you determine to be ‘right-wing’. So forgive me if I’ve got the wrong impression.

Surprise surprise again - some are (Lineker), some aren’t (Clarkson).

If you’ve got an issue with that then perhaps take it up with the various corporations and companies involved.
If you’d successfully campaigned for this universal media contract clause a few years ago we might not be in this crazy situation today.

Ah right.

So it’s my fault Lineker is bang to rights. 😂

Whereas Rees Mogg, Anderson, Clarkson, Morgan etc are allowed to spout any old bigoted, partial and biased bollocks they want.

Sadly though, because I didn’t get off my bottom and ensure a “universal media contract clause” was incorporated into all their contracts, my only other option is to come on here.

And point out when people on here are spouting hypocritical and contradictory arse.

He presents a sports programme. His personal tweets are fuck all to do with the BBC. If some of you bother to read his tweet on this, you'll see he was highlighting the language used in Germany in the 30's is not too dissimilar to the language we are hearing from certain factions of the government and its supporters. Nowhere did he mention the actions or the Holocaust. The Tories are miles behind in every single poll and are now resorting to this shit as a means of garnering support.
It'll also be used as evidence of left wing bias at the heart of the BBC whilst conveniently forgetting that the fucker who runs it was appointed by Johnson and then facilitated an £800000 loan for the lump of lard. And don't get me started on all the other executive appointees who have worked for recent Tory PM's. Being an optimistic sort. I just can't bring myself to believe that anyone with a modicum of intelligence would fall for it.

Complete nonsense only in October he was in hot water for a Tweet he put out that's BBC policy fuck all to do with anyone else.

Your post is another example of someone putting their displeasure of the Government over any rules based order.

It’s outrageous when the Government break the law or bend the rules. But when someone anti-Government breaks the rules, the rules under which they’re contractually bound, then that’s all ‘bollox’ or ‘fuck all’ to do with anyone else.

Rules it seems only apply when it suits politically. Now that’s an interesting way to go through life.

His displeasure at the government probably stems from the fact that they set the rules and then have the arrogance to do as they please.

Hardly setting the example are they?

Not really. He's not broke any rules. It's his personal opinion. He's a sports presenter. If he was hosting Question Time then I'd agree with you. If you want to discuss Fiona Bruce's connection to the Tory Party I'm happy to go there.
You did make me smile with your last line about rules though....with absolute no sense of irony.

Don't agree . . . if I feel strongly about something I'll speak my mind and not tow the party line.

If the BBC don't like it they should get rid of him.

He's also a freelancer and works for multiple companies not just the BBC. If he had said it whilst on air for a BBC programme that would have been a different scenario.

The government, or rather some of the politicians, aren’t setting a great example.

But that doesn’t mean we should be ok with others when they do something wrong. I’m not bothered what Lineker says to be honest. He can say what he likes when he likes - but he can only do so within the constraints of his employment contractual obligations.

If he wants to be the voice of the (or rather some) people then great. But he’ll need to quit. He’s got enough money to go and be a media political pundit or to run for office.

That’s all I’m saying. I support free speech so good luck to him. But I don’t agree with selective leniency based on political preferences.

I’ll guarantee you that if say Lineker was right wing and going on Twitter to call for deportations to Rawanda, the people currently defending his rights to speak up would be calling for him to be sacked.

Ok. Fair enough. But unfortunately just because someone is a freelancer as well, it doesn’t negate their obligations to the BBC. He works for a corporation that demands neutrality on Twitter. He chooses to work for them. He takes the big bucks. So he’s clearly wrong to be speaking controversially on Twitter about political topics.

What lineker has on the BBC is he is more popular than they are and they need him more than he needs them. Good on you Gary, keep on saying what they should be saying in the news if they had the spine to stand up to this proxy government.

So sports presenters aren't allowed an opinion?

The current PM was a banker, the previous one was a journalist, which coincidentally is what Lineker is.

Is there a list somewhere of who's allowed an opinion?
Sorry Lytham that’s not correct…..

The current PM is a banker 👍
The last PM was a thick bitch.
The previous PM was a lying two faced **.

I hope that helps 👍👍

I know he's a one trick donkey. He got so desperate one time that he even called the great Stanley Matthews a right wing nut job!😀

A rather sinister turn to this story was when Robert Jenryk opined that Lineker was "out of step with British public opinion" and as a BBC employee should be given a "red card" (sacked).

This is worrying on many Orwellian levels.

When we get to the stage where a government minister is of the opinion that any BBC employee should not speak out his thoughts if they deviate from government policy, or against what the goverment perceives as "public opinion", we are most certainly sailing into authoritarian territory. If you framed it another way, Jenryk is suggesting that the BBC should be thinking what the government is thinking. Whereas in reality a public broadcaster should most certainly not be doing that.

Dream ticket for the government and their media shills - the BBC and a left-leaning wokester in the firing line.

Two dead cats thrown on the table at the same time...

Clearly folk on here don't understand the word impartiality which is required of all BBC employees. Is it so difficult to grasp?
He can leave the BBC and speak all he likes. But when he's with the BBC he can't. That's the only issue.

I dont like the bloke either and he likes to stick his beak into everything but I think as a sports employee rather than news he has slightly more margin to tweet/write the way he does. Thats my understanding anyway. He will be cancelled one day and I look forward to the day.

That statement is just plain wrong. Every word of it.

As Omergod has pointed out Lineker is not directly involved in news broadcasting and is therefore not constrained in the same way as their political analysts or commentators regarding impartiality...

tell the BBC that.
I suppose you think his impartiality clause is to prevent him favouring his beloved Leicester then?

Even the likes of GB News acknowledge he’s not technically in breach of contract, although no doubt BBC management will be feeling govt pressure to shut him up or bin him.

He's effectively a public servant, the code of conduct prohibits what he's doing.

He needs to be sacked for gross misconduct.

He can then continue to spout his political extremism as much as likes

Andrew Neil presented a politics program on the BBC for a very long time.
He did so while using Twitter to comment and air his right of centre views. He is also the chairman of the right leaning Spectator magazine.
I don’t ever remember him being all over the front page of the Mail, Express , Telegraph, Times or any MPs calling for his dismissal.

That's because the right are a bunch of touchy cancel culture snowflakes.
