Was Yates offside?

Despite being proud of his players, Critchley was left unhappy with Forest's winning goal, believing Yates may have been offside before he crossed for Wood to score.

"Danilo pokes the ball to Yates and I think that was very close, borderline if he is onside or offside," added Critchley.

"In the first game we had VAR, that would've gone to VAR and you draw the lines on the pitch and it might've been offside.

"How can you have VAR in the first game and not the second game, which means we have gone out? The integrity of the competition has to be questioned.

"It might've gone to penalties and we win, but to not have VAR with the same group of players just playing on a different pitch, I can't see how that can be right."

I didn't really think so, it's hard to be sure without a VAR style camera. I also disagree with his fundamental argument, VAR should be scrapped for all but a couple of things in my opinion, but I don't really see an issue with using it in the first game and not in the replay. Forest have it set up, we don't as we're league 1. The idea is just about trying to get as many decisions right as possible - it's fair for both teams either way though.

With VAR, we may have had a penalty when Gabriel went down in the box. The ref gave nothing and Gabriel didnt complain, but the replay showed the defender caught Gabriel's foot before the ball. Yes it would have been a soft pen, but it is one that is given most weeks.

Really? When I looked at the replay the defender clearly knocked the ball away first.

thought last night Yates was offside. Watched it back on the bbc highlights a few times and it shows it side on. Think he was onside.

The linesman messed up, it was so clear I was already screaming "Offside" before the ball hit the net

He moaned about having VAR at the last game. Can’t have it both ways!

I’d be more worried about the marking for the first goal and pissing around at the back for the second goal. Both of them goals completely avoidable
I think it’s unclear on the TV so don’t have an opinion on the goal, but I think you’ve missed Critch’s point to be fair.

It’s the inconsistency of how you’d get 2 different outcomes based on where the game is played, either you have VAR or you don’t.

He makes the point that you can't have different rules for the same tie. He's right. Either VAR in both or neither.

Yep - I shouted offside when it was live !
Typical Prem bias

Wood looked straight over to linesman after scoring so he thought it was close.
yates looks onside to me and Wood definitely is as the ball was pulled back. Wood doesn't look over to the lino either. It's the guy coming in behind him who looks over and he is well onside. Probably just checking.

Not when the ball was played. Epo played him on.
If you look at the still above and look at the furthest foot forward of both players the gap to the edge of the box works in the Forest players favour.

Besides who wants to see goals ruled out for a couple of centimeters either way.
