What do you do with Sonny?

I really thought he would progress this season and be a really outstanding talent for us. He's only 23 and so has loads of time to mature and develop and I just wonder if we got another body in if we would benefit from a Casey/Dale type loan to another club for the rest of the season. Games just seem to pass him by and he has next to no impact on a game.
With Kenny gone, the chance is there to excel but, unless there is a radical change in Critch's system which in this case I don't see as the problem, then I don't know how he will achieve that?

Get him out on loan division 2 or conference he will benefit from regular game time.

Possibly our biggest selection mystery.

He had started to play the best football of his time at Pool, and did it for several games running. Then got dropped/rotated/rested don't know which and we've barely seen him since.

So now he's back to 15-20 min subs every other game which is no use to anyone, especially him. But we only have two central MF slots in the current set up and Albie Morgan is currently making one of them his own. Even with Kenny gone, Ollie Norburn was obviously signed to be the foot on the ball calm head we needed last year, and although he's even more one footed than I ever was he's ahead of Sonny in the ratings.

Now there's still talk that we're after another CM, with the likes of Byers and Moxon being mentioned. If one arrives then Sonny is probably 4th choice, maybe it is better for him to take a loan somewhere.

agree mate. i have never been a Sonny fan but like u said he was playing well up to when he was “rested” and was beginning to change my perception of him.
Nothing g personal against the lad but feel a loan move may do him the world of good otherwise hes going to be fill up stuff at best.

I don't see it with him unfortunately. I'd say virtues ahead of him in centre mid and playing wider off the striker where he should get more time and be able to be more creative, he doesn't do it there either. Technically good but it seems it's style with no substance. Loan out or sell for me.

yep another player that is an enigma just like Hamilton. Too many bad games and not enough good or even average ones. But here's the difference. Don't think I'll ever be a big fan of Hamilton but there is a way to get the best out of Hamilton and that's by playing him as a winger on his best side and having cover in behind him. But finding a role for Carey is so much harder. Think we've got better box to box players and certainly in Dembele we've got a [much] better player in the no 10 role. Think he put in a run of four or five decent performances not long back but he's gone backwards again and pretty much every game he plays now makes you question what he brings to the team.

As it stands just don't see a long term future for him here.

agreed . hamilton did make an immediate impact. dont see blackpool week in week oy. but you CAN see his contributipn . CAREY may just have reached a natural end to his playing days here. wish him well if he does depart.

Its an interesting thread. I think, combining all our various posts, we've summed him up both accurately, objectively and fairly with his best interests at heart.

And the last two posts from 20 and JMT make me ask - what exactly did happen? How does he go from being selected every week and attracting a lot of scapegoat criticism, to suddenly being moved back a little deeper and starting to play really well (he must have been because even the moaning sod behind me who groans every time he came near the ball had started to say how well he was doing). Then having produced a good consistent standard for several games, gets left out and barely played since.

All I can think is others have come in who Critch fancies more - Albie especially, he's playing really well now. But prior to others being here, Sonny was playing every week, and playing worse than he was when he was dropped. I don't disagree that he may to look elsewhere for a regular start, but I think he's been a bit unlucky in the timing of it all as well.

It's baffling. Played right he's OK, but then we brought in Weir and Morgan coupled with Dale and they're all the sameish player. The fact that Dembele has nailed down the prime spot makes any start much harder for 3 of the 4. Obviously Weir and maybe Dale won't be a bother anymore.

I said last season that Carey would be a star in this league, but it's not worked out that way.

You can't loan him out as he's needed for cover.

A case of see what happens in summer I think.

People are too quick to jump on the backs of players without seeing the bigger picture

Its up to the manager to get the best out of players and play a system to suit

The current system doesn't suit Carey, it also doesn't suit Dale or Cj if they are playing as wing backs, even our best defender in Marv has struggled

Just saying he's shit get rid is not only lazy its ** stupid and just shows people up for having zero footballing acumen

Needs to play as an attacking midfielder to be effective. James Husband was quoted as saying Carey was the player who could play at a higher level so he must have something.

He could learn a thing or two from Morgan who is always busy and looking for the ball, Carey does seem a bit passive in that sense.

So 23 people think we should loan or sell Carey. Personally I'm prepared to just the judgement of the professional coaches running the club.

Got knocked off the ball a few times last night. Seems very lightweight. Got talent but it's just not happening for him

Have you ever seen him play?
Yes, only good games he's had this year have been Fleetwood, Pompey and Stevenage.

Hasn't been bad, but hasn't lived up to potential when played correctly.

Dembele much better which is why he hasn't gotten a consistent run where he prefers to play.

Still believe there's a player there though.

Dembele is a completely different type of player

Thats fair comment but you cannot blame all those under whelming performances on just playing out of position...he needs some confidence and perhaps a loan in League 2 would get him his mojo back and sharpen him up. Still has time to turn things back round but needs something to improve hi.s performances.

Of course you can look at how bad Paul Scholes looked for England in major tournaments being stuck on the left hand side of a midfield 4

He’s lightweight and it was highlighted last night.
I just don’t think he is going to reach the levels we were hoping for and he’s probably at his ceiling now.

Ive always thought of him as a attacking/striker, not a fully fledged midfielder, but he's only 23 and could fill out more. That could
be to the benefit of another club.

fill out more? Think he's pretty well built as he is. He's certainly not lightweight as in like Dembele.

the two or three games we really controlled, the MF was Dougal sat behind Carey and Dembele - we really looked a unit and then for some reason Dougal and Carey are dropped and then we lose Dougal. Bizarre

yes, he seemed to have found a bit of form and maybe in a role that suits him but then found himself back on the bench. What does that tell you? You can't second guess Critchley perhaps?

What are his attributes, too often he plays it safe, or tries to and fails, often he almost completely disappears. Doesn't win headers, corners and free kicks are poor, can't or doesn't tackle, got left for dead for pace and strength by a Bolton player last night, almost has a good long range shot on him in the way that I am almost good at darts, usually just wide of where you want it to go. And he parks in disabled parking bays! Time for him to go.

Think he's a good player however the critch system isn't right for him,he isn't a player that can run all night or has pace.. watched him last night , looked like a fat kid running after an ice cream van, just not quite getting there, left huffing and puffing without any end product.

He’s 6ft tall and around 12 stone. If he can’t stand his ground now, he never will.
