I thought it was Great Game Yesterday

Whereas Im disappointed we didnt win, I cam out of the ground yday and thought Id witnessed a real football match and the two lads with me said the same. It was end to end free flowing footy which any team could have won and in the end we looked he stronger of two evenly matched sides. What Im totally bemused with is, why has it taken the manager up until now to start going at teams. Why have we not played CJ in that position before and let the opposition worry about the threat of him rather than us pulling him back to defend. Cant really criticise any of the players commitment, could very easily have been 3 or 4, dont forget the world class save their keeper made from the header, as well as denying Lavery a few times. Overall a good game and Ive rarely said that this season. First 45 against Charlton was superb too. I know its not good enough and its very frustrating but I see signs of hope with these players. A perfect 10 run and we will make it but I doubt this team has the consistency to do it in rea;ity. Message to manager after my ramblings, stop tinkering with formations play 4-4-2 with your strongest side and you will win more than you lose. UTMP!!.

yep, i thought it was a good game between two decent teams. Overall a draw was the right result imo.

We dont have a right footed winger to play 442 we just sold him

I can only tell you what I felt. Came out yday and just thought Id witnessed a proper football game for a full 90 mins. I know we are desperate to get back up but Id take that style of football every week in that division rather than trying to grind out results. I know we will lose Dembele end of season but what a joy to watch, so enjoy while we can. I go to be entertained and am not always affected by results, just wanna watch reasonably good footy and I felt that yday for the first time all season. Well done to both sides for giving it a good go. Radio Lancs said much the same in the car on way home

It was a decent contest and you can see why they are pushing for promotion. There are several things I would conclude from yesterday and recent games.

The defence turn to statues at least once every game.
We miss Ollie Casey in the back three.
The midfield is slow to move the ball and doesn’t cover well enlough
Generally speaking CJ offers more than Gabriel.
Coulson is poor
Lavery has no end product
Joseph needs shooting practice

I am hopeful that Byers will replace Norburn and be more positive with distribution but we badly need Rhodes back.

Whilst a play off push is possible I’m not sure the players believe it.

Finally someone admits it. It was a really enjoyable game and I thought we played well against a strong team. Getting fed up with the constant sniping against Critchley, yes some results have been disappointing but his teams always give 100% and he’s been a bit unlucky at times I feel, once we start getting some away wins with a tweaked system we’ll do well although looking more like next season than this. Plus I think he’s a genuine hard working nice guy who the results affect as much as us fans and I’d much rather have him in charge than a Grayson Appleton type.

Overall this season has been mixed. It definitely hasn't been as awful as some are making out.
Our home form is good, we've scored a lot of goals and I've seen some excellent performances. Like you say for 55/60 mins against Charlton we were quality.
It's been frustrating (mainly due to manager tactics in some games) but the negativity by some is crazy. Last season under McCarthy was a million times worse than this.

just my own take on your post.

Casey was unlucky to be dropped but i've no issues with the other 3 centre backs. yesterday, thought Morgan was our best player and rightly got MOM but i do understand your point about slow to move the ball but that is alss a problem which stems from the back too. Gabriel is a much better player than CJ especially in the roles they are given which is generally as a wing back. Not seen enough of Coulson yet but so far think he's been ok. Yep, Lavery is a frustrating enigma. And i like Joseph, he works very hard and has a fair bit of skill but is he a natural goalscorer? probably not. He needs someone like Rhodes as a strike partner to be on the end of all the energy that he gives.

Gabriel is a better defender, more aggresive in the tackle than CJ (not difficult I know) but yesterday CJ showed that he is one of the few players we have that can take on and beat the full-back. Not entirely convinced by Coulson either, he is a bit lightweight and has not produced anything in the final third but like you say it's early days and might be a case of building his fitness.

It will be interesting to see the line up on Tuesday. We have to try something a bit different away from home.

Yeah it was a good game yesterday, frustrating not to win but both teams were going at it.

Thought Pennington was excellent at the back for us and was my MOTM. We were not quite clinical up top and we missed Rhodes, hopefully it's sooner rather than later before he returns. Thought Byers looked good when he came on and hopefully he can make an impact for the rest of the season.

At the end, a draw was a fair result.

What the fuck was the point in benching CJ and giving Gabriel only Lavery to aim at cross wise? CJ then comes on and as great as it is when Hoggy is banging the drum, he mis hit crosses. Hit the first man. He generally did absolutely nothing to cause them concern. I could count about 5 bad touches in his first 10 minutes on the pitch.

We had no focal point up front. We're playing sides with 1 striker. Playing 3 centre backs who all bar Pennington and Casey (On the ** bench!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!) are uncomfortable playing in a 3.

I don't think we coach attacking phases because Coulson beat his man, looked up and there was nothing in the box for him. Lavery got pocketed by their giant CB for pace and for anything in the air.

Everything yesterday looked to me like we don't really have a clue what we are doing. We scored from a set piece and second phase which was good from Norburn and Pennington but we never ever look that threatening from set pieces, theme throughout the season.

I personally can't see what we are trying to achieve.

As we decided to let our best youth prospect tearing it up in a league below go back out on loan, potentially one of the worst transfer decisions this club has made in years. We also let our only technical winger go to a promotion rival. We've left ourselves absolutely stuffed for quality.

If you want to play this system and you don't have Rhodes. You have to get CJ on his natural foot on the left. Joseph through the middle. Dembele on the right. The system isn't and hasn't really worked most of the season let's be fair.

I disagree with the general sentiment. I think both teams regard themselves as ball playing teams, yet yesterday was made up of LOTS of miss placed passes from both teams, head tennis rallies in excess of ten, balls going up higher than the stadium roof and a general lack of quality across both teams. I think it was a poor advert for teams supposedly looking to leave league one.

I think both teams were evenly matched in not really reaching their natural highs resulting in a fair, but disappointing draw.

Really their keeper made 6/7 saves
Saves that I would make. The header was the only real good chance. They had two extremely close attempts so if measuring the game on really good chances, they should have won.

Just another toothless but what do we expect with 5 defenders on the pitch. Critchley out.

In the 70 minutes previous just how many crosses did Gabriel get in? When he's on his game, he is a real threat, but yesterday wasn't one of them.

Are you this negative outside of football?

I'd hate to have to give you a meal. Far too much honest appraisal, as you would call it.

Just a bit fed up. Watching persevere with this chaotic mess of a formation is getting more and more difficult each week.

Fair response. I tend to think CJ generally does a decent job and is more threatening going forward but decision making is often poor. I like Gabriel but he never convinces me fully defensively. I do accept CJ is no defender either but on balance I would go with him.

As for Coulson I can see why Boro have sent him on loan but he is not really showing anything Lyons cannot do better.

Morgan has been class for the last month so agree with that and Dembele is energetic enough but does overdo things and I wish he could stay on his feet occasionally.

Granted I’m not on a par with Graham but I’m a brilliant upholsterer if I do say so myself! and I’m obviously old enough to remember Graham and I just wish he would have been at Wembley that day to see us get promoted to the premiership especially seeing how passionate he was when playing Rochdale, bury etc
