Whilst so much attention is focused on what is happening to Jews and Palestinians, we had our own terrorist murder here in Hartlepool over last weekend.
4 asylum seekers housed in a property at the literal end of the road where I work; 1 of whom was Moroccan and radicalised - where this happened, who knows.
He attempted to murder one of the other folk in the house, went on a walk and murdered a 70 year old man who had just got his money out of the cash point at Morrisons.
He was quickly apprehended and is now going through the judicial system as a terrorist.
As sickening as it sounds, we're lucky. It happened at 6am, if it had been a bit later, it would have been busier and there could well have been carnage.
Lots of questions.
Mears Group have a private contract with the Home Office to house people seeking asylum and have no duty to report it to the Local Authority. Their contract makes loads of cash which is why they rent cheap houses in Hartlepool to maximise their profits.
What have Mears Group done to make sure that all their residents are safe and what checks do they do to put people in houses so that they don't house people who historically have hated each other?
The Local Authority have no influence over this but have to pick up the pieces of it. What are Mears responsibilities to pay some form of reparation to the town's council tax payers who are picking up the tab?
What are the protocols for working with local communities to understand that there are going to be new arrivals and this will change the feel of a place.
It appears as though the housemate (another person seeking asylum) reported the terrorist to the prevent team as he feared he was going to be murdered - what action was taken and what went wrong?
Why can we now get police patrols on foot, when for the last 10 years, we've not had them?
How do we work together to make sure that the actual racists (who have been proven right in this case) don't milk it for all it's worth and stir up shit for the rest of the non-white community?
There's more; but for something like this to happen in a town like Hartlepool, needs to be noticed and actions to minimise the potential of it happening elsewhere.
