What was Karl Oyston like as a Chairman

Question I was recently asked and seeing the Julian Winter thread made me weirdly nostalgic,

Probably the passing of time erasing all the dickish things he did but in a warped way I look back at KOKO with a bizarre wry smile.
Standing next to the Cash Cow sign, calling BST a Busted Flush, coming out at his farm in a ski mask, the way he got jeered in the sponsors lounge and rose to it and just his general buffoon stature and manner (even when he went on Soccer AM in full kit).

His Father I have utter contempt for but sometimes I miss Karl as a character we could all unite behind in taking the piss out of. He was like a bad Boris Johnson - that type of mildly eccentric idiotic person who bluffs his way through life (and yes ultimately destructive, dangerous and deluded but what's the expression 'it was never a dull moment').

You look back at the whole era with Ollie as Manager (even going back to McMahon) and it did feel like there was always something happening and something talk about. It does feel a very bland and grey era at BFC with Sadler/Critchley .. although of course that could all change in June!!

The only positives are that he had a sense of humour.
It took years to convince some on here that it was actually him posting on AFTTT.
He was like a lucky novice gambler on a winning streak. We all know what happens next!

Tactless yes, arrogant sometimes which could sometimes accompany economical with the truth? Yes. An idiot? No. A smarter man and a better man than people give him credit for considering who his father is. Miracle he got anything right with those genes within him.

Bland and Grey, maybe that's because BFC doesn't leak like a sieve anymore.

Under Karl it was one big Circus.

Sorry NAPMer I can't agree with that. I think Mr Justice Smith called him right. I can't remember his words right now but he certainly wasn't impressed.

If you go back to when he first came in he was very different to Chairmen of the time -

1. Admitted he did not like or knew anything about football.
2. Stated he would run the club like a business and we would only spend what we had.
3. Brought in the £90 (or whatever it was) per week for players during the summer which weirdly was adopted by a lot of clubs.
4. Made players wash their own kit which now seems ludicrous for pampered footballers but his argument was that would your office ‘wash your work shirt’?

So at the beginning he was ok - some might say - good, he was on the FA board or a while if memory serves. It just seems when the prem money came in it all blew up.

Owen was always the much bigger villain. Organ grinder and monkey.
That's open to debate. Bigger but not much bigger. Owen was Owen but Karl was nasty with it. His kids brought up the same and with an attitude to wind up and antagonise the fans. Owen would have never chopped the Morty statue off at the legs and throw it in a shed and blame the fans. He was a nasty piece of work. Where I agree with you about Owen is he should have removed him a long time before and he just sat back and let it happen...number plates , tennis rackets the lot. He used Karl as a shield.
I remember a pleasant Sunday afternoon on here when Karl and Peter Whiteside or Whitehead whatever his name was and helped get the 2 stands built, were going at it hammer and tong. AVFTT classic. No one stayed with the Oystons long term if you worked with them. There was always a fall out.

He gave us some of the best times we have had watching Blackpool, and some of the worst times. Wouldn't have got to the Premier League without him whether people like that fact or not. At least he owned the fact he was disliked and played the Villain very well whilst having to watch his family get abused daily for years. For all his faults I am certain we would be in a much better position if he was chairman for the last 5 years than where we are now.

Well done on being dick of the day, absolute bollocks

Put that on pne online they'll lap it up.

Absolutely frigging ridiculous.

Please change your username to Nobber white or something?

You obviously weren't paying attention at the time then, Jord. He might have been occasionally amusing but a few funny lines on a message board don't make up for his complete disregard for the future of the club.

We got to the Prem in spite of him and his father.
We got relegated because of him and his father.
The club has spent since him and his father were kicked out recovering from the neglect and abuse it suffered at their hands.

Karl was all ego and bluster with an inept bully's approach to business. A man who took a golden opportunity and helped screw it to pieces because of greed. I met him quite a few times and each time he left me feeling unimpressed and concerned for the club.

I agree with the o/p - if you read his post he’s not saying the guy was anything but a dick but at least he made it interesting as a fan. Sadler and Critchley are so beige and boring - I liked the drama, the outrage, the protests and the damning of the dickhead! AVFTT was a bit livelier as well!

You have posted some absolute shite on here previously but this is your worst effort yet, you are totally deluded and if you were twice as clever you still wouldn’t even be a halfwit. The club went up in spite of him not because of him. I think you must be suffering some kind of Stockholm syndrome to think he would be an improvement on what we have now. Either that or you are simply NOT a Blackpool fan.

He was quite a funny guy to be fair. And I enjoyed his stance with parasite agents etc. I know someone who worked in the club shop in the late nineties just after Karl took charge and he came down with a box of quality street and whilst talking to the 4 people proceeded to wolf the lot and never offered them out to the others. I quite admire that obnoxious streak if I’m honest.

Not for the first time I think this is a troll account.

I'm guessing "Jord" is short for "Jaw Droppingly Stupid"

He sounds hilarious . A real laugh a minute 🙄

What absolute utter crap. Not worth even trying to correct you on your revisionist version of historical facts. And in another recent thread you commented how his dad got us back to the Greed League. No mention of Belokon though.

Those on the receiving end of his bollox know. You clearly do not. Or you are bored and trying to feebly troll. I'm going for troll.

The Belekon investment that among other things enabled us to sign Charlie Adam he[ped us to get to the Prem plus Holloways persistence in his job application, when very few credible candidates wanted to work for the Oyston`s, despite Koko`s reluctance and perpetual indolence to deal with him.

His most remarkable achievement was to convince a large proportion of our dedicated fans to stay away from their beloved team. Has anyone else got close to achieving that?

Now that has to be the most comical post ever on here……I suggest you think twice or even thrice before you bother posting on here again but it won’t stop you no doubt🤡🤡

Am I missing something? Always felt Karl was way worse than Owen. He literally did not give a fuck about the club and held it in contempt, he was the chairman who heralded one of the most depressing eras in our history.

Owen I felt did have a shred of love for the club, as bad and bizarre as he was. Karl despised it as a drain on his inheritance - hated football, the club and us.

Owen was a chameleon so could appear as anything if he felt it benefited Owen. Karl was hamstrung by his family commitments. In actions son did more than dad for the club. If you look beyond the norm, you’d still keep your distance but your perspective would not be as negative as it was. I wonder what he’s done apres BFC.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for a someone to post a "don't you just miss them Oystons?" thread.

I miss them like someone would miss having cancer. They were a ragtag bunch of utterly despicable bastards.

Those posting positive things about any of them is 100% mushroom. The Oystons had many sycophants kissing their arses and doing their bidding. Probably the same people.
