1953

Probably the first Pool team I remember watching, memories come flooding back, pitches like that were just the norm back then!

Before my time, but I see we needed that win to guarantee staying up. Preston finished bottom, and haven't been seen in the first tier since.

Thanks tor that, as I have never seen it before. Pitch looks awful. Just 3 years after this I was taken to my first match at BR at the age of 5

Pitch was awash. Imagine Jimmy Floyd being faced with that.

Matthews fed by Armfield onto Charnley...

Must've been some heavy April showers that year!

Great memories from my early-supporting days, Ray Charnley still the best header of a ball I've ever seen.

When we got a corner at The Kop End, thousands used to sing "CHARNLEY, CHARNLEY, CHARNLEY!!!"

Ray Parry could certainly smack a ball with his left foot but, perhaps, not as hard as Des Horne.

Over 60 years ago, FFS...😨😄🧡

Fantastic O/P. Never seen this before. Our boys were certainly skilful back then, keeping it on the deck as often as possible, in those conditions. Also, the game flows, no rolling around on the floor, time wasting. The assist for our 2nd reminds me of Yates to Madine v Preston ! Vintage pool. 👍

If you search for the heavy roller videos on you tube he has quite a few highlights of 50/60’s games. He has several involving Blackpool. The earliest I found was 1955/56 Portsmouth 3 Blackpool 3. Picture quality can be a poor on some of the videos but still worth watching IMO.

There are some earlier than that. Colchester in the cup in 1948 , the semi final replay against Brum in 1951 and the Port Vale Cup
game in 1954.

Pretty sure that was the season when 'Pool were leading Tottenham 1-0 with minutes to go when Barrie Martin and Gordon West decided to time waste (Game managment we call it now) by passing to one another. A spurs player robbed the ball and scored and then they went onto win.

South Stand , I think it was the following season. It was the first game of the season and they were Champions. A real sickener.

The Heavy Roller on You Tube posted yesterday highlights of Leyton Orient v Blackpool 1962/63. Worth watching as Pool win. Reserve winger John Watt makes a rare first team appearance. Ray Parry is man of the match IMO.
