Green Party calls for football regulator to set up in Blackpool to bring ‘£130m boost to town’
The Green Party say it could see as many as 200 new posts created on the coast.

The Green Party says football’s new independent regulator should be set up in Blackpool to bring a £130 million boost to the town.

They say it could see as many as 200 new posts created on the coast.
It would also mean fighting off Manchester as the preferred location for the new body.
The Greens called on all political parties to support their bid at a hustings last night at the Armfield Club, Bloomfield Road, for the Blackpool South by-election.
Spokeswoman Tina Rothery, standing in for candidate Ben Thomas, said: “Blackpool not only has a rich football heritage but badly needs this kind of investment and good jobs.”

“Yet no towns have been invited to pitch for this Regulator. That is wrong. We want to see it on the Fylde Coast.”
The Football Governance Bill, currently going through Parliament, will establish the IFR for elite English men’s football.
Job figures have been carefully guarded, but the Greens understand it will have more than 100 full-time staff and possibly up to 200.
And its budget is likely to be more than £13 million a year for the first ten years.

Yeah it's not a bad shout, however we all know what happens, it goes to one of the big cities...

Very clever by The Greens.

Given this Board, would there be the expertise to run it properly ? !

I'm surprised some people on here are so negative about the town's chances. We got behind a boycott once and it worked pretty well. Blackpool and Fylde has a long record of delivering on public services such as pensions and running the Premium Bonds operation. The HSE is headquartered in Bootle ffs!
Don't see why this would not be worth some lobbying for jobs on TGC.

It's about attracting the best staff and sadly a Blackpool v Manchester debate only has one winner.
That kind of argument is part of a downward spiral, a "why bother" approach. There are plenty of intelligent people in the town more than capable of running the regulatory office as efficiently as anywhere else in the country. Not everyone in Blackpool is underprivileged, ignorant or drug and alcohol dependent.

How about the Greens trying to attract companies who make things for the environment like wind turbines, solar panels etc etc?
So the average Joe can get a decent paid job like BAE.

Not a load of high earners who will work hybrid pop into the office a few times a month and live elsewhere.

Pie in the sky for this idea ,but what I will say is ,its probably worth voting Green anyway . Our families may survive a little longer if we do more for the environment. Food prices are going to go up this year because of flooding in this country and in the next six years a fifth of maze and a quarter of wheat crops or the other way round will disappear world wide through Global warming .
Also if Putin gets his way and wins in the Ukraine they are one of the worlds main producers of wheat . No matter if my facts are slightly out ,we are in trouble in the next 10 years. Anyway I just thought I would try and cheer people up.,

Yes indeed, those kind of jobs are even more important and are the kind of jobs the Green Party has been lobbying for way before Labour or the Tories even gave the environmental dividend a moment's thought. Don't forget new nuclear, blue infrastructure etc either. Both the main parties have been and remain pitiful on environment and the risks and economic opportunities it brings.

Back to the main point, there is no reason why TGC could not host this new regulatory operation.

Not it's not. It's the basic facts. People of Blackpool or the Fylde don't make the choice. At the end of the day the choice is made by people wanting to attract the best applicants for the job. And like it or not, Manchester (for example) is a more attractive place to go and work than here.

It will not be about local employment.

The biggest problem we've got is population growth UK 8 million estimated next 25 year and World 1.2 Billion until you get a handle on that we're pissing in the wind with the Green agenda.

The greens other ideas would change the way we live for the worse in the immediate term, a lot of their ideas are completely unworkable in the timeframes they suggest. Look at Scotland who've just scrapped the 2030 target.

You are probably right ,but while countries are ignoring the situation ,it will get worse quicker .

Levelling up. Those that make the decision don't give a stuff about football or its regulation, they won't be looking to make it particularly effective just gain some brownie points for box ticking.

Well one thing is for sure. With football fans as its main stakeholders it will do whatever it does right in the spotlight. And it will be under continuius pressure from the usual suspects at the EPL right from minute one.

Absolute nonsense.
Looks like someone's been lapping up the worst scare stories, here's one below...

Yet with much varying data and different scenarios, you can read about a couple of foot of sea level rise by 2,100, that's if we don't really do anything.

It would take centuries for any doomsday scenarios and that's without increasing sea defences, technological solutions, tree planting or any effort anywhere.

Then again...

We could believe this.

Less than 6 years left for some...

😮🙄

It's bonkers JJ from the doomongers.

There are only two of us on here who've been banging the drum about overpopulation and the Green issues for ages me and @Chunky Lad.

Until you get a hold of it nothing will change as all these new mouths need water, feeding, clothing, homing and power to live their lives.

I don't know much about their ideas. Which ones are unworkable and why?

Im guessing that they have more than one idea for the Fylde coast.
Or you could carry on voting Tory/Labour and reap the benefits of their innovative, pro active spending and initiatives for the Fylde coast.
Especially the Torys with all the massive Brexit benefits that they brought to us.

Blackpool is a bit slow on the tree planting, i have yet to visit a large town in Europe or America that has less trees, are Reform, Labour or the Tories going to change this?

So do we all vote for nothing to change while Blackpool becomes less attractive and uglier or do people suggest ideas and put pressure on people to throw us a bone?

As much as I absolutely love the idea. It ain’t gonna happen.
Thats not a reason to not encourage and appreciate the thought.
You're probably right but if we roll over and say the Fylde coast is shite why would they come here, then my guess is it will just get worse and worse over here.
Lets be honest Blackpool as a holiday resort is almost as defunct as the milltowns that it was set up for.
It needs repurposing as a good place to live in commuting distance of Manchester and Liverpool in a seaside location.
If it doesnt change it will die in the way that American towns do when they no longer serve a purpose. A grim prospect.

They are well underway with planting 10k trees, there's quite a lot of new ones around, but some areas require road remodelling etc.

Its a start, needs loads more, if you are a tourist destination a basic principle is you have to be a more attractive option than where people live, hopefully they add thousands more and we might be getting somewhere👍

Yea I think it started in 2021, so is well under way and some good progress made, more and more each planting season, aiming to get what was 4% tree canopy to 10%.

Still much more to do though including the quick wins where no road remodelling is required, verges fields, people's gardens etc.

I don’t disagree with any of that, and I don’t think that we should roll over and say the Fylde Coast is shite.
But it doesn’t change the fact that I would put a week’s wage on it not happening.

They haven’t even invited any towns to pitch let alone be serious contenders. I don’t think Blackpool comes anywhere close to their remit.

But, as I said in my previous post, absolutely love the idea myself.

The Supercasino was an idea wholly created in, by and for Blackpool yet the greed from the big city councils fecked it up and in the end nobody got it! It doesn't matter what little Blackpool wants or deserves, the bullies will step in and feck it up if they can't have it!

By the same token Blackpool would have got the Casino and the Football Museum, but it didn't. Both went to Manchester and I don't see that trend being broken.

The casino was the result of a financial evaluation system that was ditched precisely because it gave the wrong answer.
