All the talk presently is about A I. Cars being driven by it, no doubt trains will also go the same way etc.

Can it be used in Football? there is already a thread further down about statistics being used by a couple of Clubs , so I would think it is feesable that it will happen,

With that in mind, a new factory is being built in Yorkshire which will produce components for the future, It's called A Up.

I'll get my coat!

It's how we chose Appleton & McCarthy I'm told, Dobbie was plain common sense. 👍

Technically you could use the 'Moneyball' theory and set parameters based on any number of points
The only thing is.....What makes a good footballer to fit into your team?
OPTA stats would be a good start point..and I'm positive you could put together a team of 'decent' players....but would they play well together?

I have checked GPT but it doesn't have access to the real-time data from OPTA (has to be paid for). However, it can provide a list of the top 12 players who had the best OPTA for each recognised position in a football team in League 1 based on the statistics in 2021:
Some of these may have moved on etc or changed clubs

Jonson Clarke-Harris - Peterborough United
Charlie Wyke - Sunderland
Will Nightingale - AFC Wimbledon
Jorge Grant - Lincoln City
Dion Charles - Accrington Stanley
Sammie Szmodics - Peterborough United
Aiden McGeady - Sunderland
Joe Pigott - AFC Wimbledon
Callum Camps - Fleetwood Town
Tom Naylor - Portsmouth
Gwion Edwards - Ipswich Town
James Vaughan - Tranmere Rovers

These are at least a season out, and I don't think represent the best players at all.

It’s already being used at the very highest levels (UK, Spain, Italy) but not really on match day yet.

Clubs which are using it are using training data and GPS data to try to predict when a player is predisposed to an injury.

So things like a player turning one way more consistently than the other can be spotted by AI and used to predict hamstring problems and shoulder problems etc.

I imagine the next step will be to analyse player positioning and have AI suggest substitutions mid-match. It would be able to get data from the camera systems in the stadium and analyse it much more competently (and without bias) than a manager on the touchline.

Whether managers would trust it (or see it at a threat!) is another matter. MM destroyed the season of our best player because he wore a hairband to keep his hair from his eyes — I can’t imagine an opinionated old fart like him having an open mind to technology helping with decisions! And there are a lot of opinionated old farts in football.
