Boxing day 1963 at home to Chelsea and at one time in the match 4-0 down when Dave Durie scored, end result loss 5-1 anyone remember that awful day.

Things were worse elsewhere for some clubs,
United lost 6-1 to Burnley
Ipswich went down 10-1 down to Fulham
Stoke lost to Liverpool 6-1
The Hammers hammered 8-2 by Blackburn
Wbrom and Spurs levelled at 4-4
and things were not much different in the second division, where
Scunthorpe went down 8-1 to Man City.

I was not due to be in the UK over Christmas, we were on our way to Cyprus prior to Christmas but developed a technical fault near Ostende and diverted to Manston, my first visit to Kent and ended up watching Gillingham's win over Southport 5-1, courtesy of an RAF regiment sergeant who offered us a lift to the match as we had little else to do but wait for repairs to be carried out.

I do remember it Whits in so much as we were in the middle of a really bad spell which continued for a couple of months before we
pulled ourselves together to avoid relegation. It was a feature in the sixties that we did reasonably well at the start of seasons ( 64/5 season
was a good example) but fell away when the pitches became heavier in winter before recovering in the spring. We were a lightweight team in those days.

I know that '63 was the awful winter when Armfield & Waiters were pictured skating on the pitch. However, I guess that would have been the 62/63 season and not the one on your post. I was only 3 years old.

I remember Man Utd hammering Burnley by a similar score atOld Trafford the following day or so.
Often had back to back Derby games at Christmas.

If I remember rightly didn't the Hammers go up there after that 8-2 pasting a couple of days later and beat Rovers. Must have recovered from their Christmas booze up by then.
