Academy Issues?

My boy has been lucky enough to be picked up by Fleetwood Pre Academy. I don't massively enjoy watching him out a Fleetwood kit on every Sunday morning, but I'm proud he has impressed them enough to have been selected.

This is basically a system where players are picked up from 6 to 8 years old and trained in an environment similar to an academy with games in the same sort of environment. Players are also allowed to continue to play with their normal grassroots teams and no contracts are signed until they are at least 9 years old.

Players are scouted in the usual way and some of the players at both under 7 and under 8 level are unbelievable for their age.

Now onto my main point.

A couple of the players also train with the Blackpool pre academy, but all I have heard is how poor the set up is compared to Fleetwood. Clubs are asked to send their best players (because Blackpool don't fund scouts at that age) but this has resulted in a load of local coaches sending their own kids down instead of the best players.

Many players have left because it is so poor, but also whoever they employed to do the pre academy has apparently now being sacked for selling fake Blackpool FC training kits at £40 a pop.

This is obviously an Oyston hangover that needs curing, but I wonder how far down the list of jobs the lower age academy is and if it's wise to let Fleetwood snap up all the local talent when it's quite obvious watching the training and matches that there is going to be some very good local players we will miss out on.

With rules on how far kids are allowed to travel for training to academy teams, it has to be a priority to sort this out or risk our academy being left behind!

The head of Cods academy lett them recently to join us so it is being looked at and action taken.

Novy.
I don't know you as poster.
In the first instance what GJ says.
I'm not sure how old your child is but if they are in the 6-8 year kld category I wouldn't worry about who he plays for just let him play with his mates.
If he's good enough, and I hope he is, then you/he will be able to pick and coose when he gets a bit older.
I think with all the money being put into our academy, under the watchful eye of Simon Sadler, I'd be confident that we will be improving.
If there aren't dodgy people in the game selling shirts then I'll be shocked.

I was thinking that as long as we take the better players at 16 from Cods and others then everything before that is irrelevant really?
In the same way we lose our talented teens to the top clubs, we should be a more attractive proposition at the business end of the academy years than Fleetwood.
Hope your kid enjoys the next 8 years there - then if he’s any good you know where to take him 👍

There’s a lad that trains every day with his dad and cones in the park near me. He can’t be more than 4 and he’s got closer control than I have with a mini football. There are some phenomenal toddlers these days!

With his dad and cones? 🤣

We got to the Premier League with a totally shambolic set up.

I'm not sure what that means.

At that age clubs are just casting a net far and wide hoping to catch a decent one. 99.9% wont make it. Ive seen so many parents drag their clubs from academy to academy to constantly get released much to the kids disappointment. By the time they reach 14/15 there confidence is shot . Glorified cattle market IMO.

It might take years to become the local first choice for young players as a consequence of the years of disarray. These things can’t just be turned on overnight. Fleetwood are now five or six years in to a long term plan with facilities to match. Things take time to develop. Patience is key. I noticed they beat Crystal Palace in Youth FA Cup Friday.
