Admin Closure of Recent Threads

I am usually in agreement with Admin when they close a thread - things get out of hand, posts become lairy, provocative or just plain insulting. However, whilst understanding the closure of the Southport thread, I thought the closure of the Hartlepool thread was a tad premature. Of course we had the same posters disagreeing with each other on the same issues. Even so, there was nothing insulting or provocative going on. Indeed, I thought there was a good, open debate in progress.

I would ask Admin to give a little more slack and to only cut things off where there is real nastiness being posted and complained about. Yes, I understand that their resources are stretched but wading in early can be just as irritating to those of us who want to debate this stuff.

What they posted and it's fair enough-

Owing to the high number of complaints and reports of posts we've had on this thread and after a number of requests to close it, we are closing this thread for further comments.

Can we remind you:

1. When you signed up to AVFTT you did so by accepting the rules of the site.
2. This is primarily a Blackpool FC chat site. When we had the old site the main complaint was the number of non-BFC posts on the forum. Because of that we invested in this new site which separates the two.
However, despite the o/t site only accounting for less than 5% of our viewership, it accounts for well over 95% of complaints. We have thought about closing the o/t section down because of this however appreciate non-BFC news would probably just seep in to the main site.
However, as we don't having the time or resources to deal with all the posts currently being reported, we will be closing down these threads in future.
3. We appreciate it is a volatile world and views will be different however please post in a thoughtful, non-aggressive and constructive way. Extreme views will not be accepted.

Finally, we have had a number of regular and respected posters on this forum over a number of years tell us they are no longer coming back to the forum whilst we tolerate those who regularly break the rules. To that extent, we will in future have no qualms banning those members from the o/t forum.

I agree, I think a warning to be sensitive around events in Southport would be fair enough but the Hartlepool thread could have also developed into interesting discussion… I thought post 27 raised legitimate points worthy of further examination 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have just had a private discussion with Admin and understand why they did what they did. I have said I wouldn't push this any further, so I'll say no more on this thread. NB. I haven't been got at. I think the thread has made its point and doesn't need to press the point further.

And now the guys been named, but I guess we can’t talk about it. There I was thinking we lived in a free speech society.

It's that part of the AVFTT admins post i have a problem with. There is a pretty clear left/right divide on this side of the board but in terms of posters it heavily leans towards the left. The left dominate it and no doubt it's the left posters who are the ones who are the most proficient in reporting posts they don't like and so i clearly think there is a big bias in moderation of the board even though that would be denied. That of course then results in posters being warned. The admin says that posters are no longer coming back but how many posters on the other side of the forum won't post on this side because of that clear bias. Yet we have the mods now saying they won't have a problem from banning people.

The moderation is clearly not even handed.

But did you have a private discussion with a faceless person of whom you've no idea who they are?

It seemed to get closed just as Phil joined in the debate. You might not agree with his views, but he’s entitled to them as much as anyone else on this site as long as they don’t cross the line - which I don’t think they did.
I thought the same

I posted it got deleted and then the thread was closed

If I'm not allowed to post then the site may has well just ban me

Of course you have as chief grass

As a left and right poster, currently more on the left, I do have to agree with 20’s that this board veers mainly to the left with posters, and often, so does the moderation.
I don't always agree with comments on either side, but if expressed without abuse, all opinions should be tolerated, and unfortunately they are not.

Here you go this was a post made on the Southport thread which was allowed to stand

"Let me take a machete to your intellectual thicket, LSA"

if that had been posted by a poster with a right wing view it would have been reported by the left and no doubt deleted and a warning issued. But the other way round, it's classed as ok.

One example of the uneven moderation on here!

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I have often seen it said that any organisation, forum etc that is not explicitly right wing will always end up being dominated by lefties because of their intolerance and willingness to censor.

Bang on, as is proven on this site on a daily basis

Axel Muganwa Rudakubana is his name, released by approval of the court, born in Cardiff of parents originally from Rwanda. We still don’t know his motive, but clearly the disgraceful protests are the result of some social media information, whatever that was. I await the deletion of this post.

I'm probably considered left wing on here as behaviour that at age 16 or 17 i might have got caught up in i now find cringeworthy at best and disgusting at worst.
Im talking about chanting silly and abusive songs while drinking cans of Stella, the inappropriate use of the nationsl flag, and at the worse end physically attacking property and police officers.
However as long as anybody of any opinion doesn't go down the line of threatening or racist behaviour then i say let it all stand, we're all big enough to take a minor insult and can usually see people for what they are.
I must add that the number of people on here that appear to be racist and the number that go down the say it to my face route is very small.
There are valid opinions and ideas left, right and centre.

And another one gone

Pathetic this site and the people who moderate it, hiding behind a user name

I've always been keen on a free board and letting people 'hang themselves' (not literally in case people can't understand it...) with clearly offensive and abusive comments, if that's the way they really feel.

The issue with the last few days is that the topics discussed all stem from an abhorrent and horrific situation. The reality of the situation, whichever way you want to dress it up, is 3 dead children. Which is appalling. And maybe this board showing some respect to those girls is a little more important than oneupmanship around socio-political views on a random message board?

I think you are giving this board a bit too much credit as its been this way for the last couple of years

Like I said, I'm not in favour of pulling threads. Never have been and never will. Individual comments can be looked at if they cross certain rules or barriers etc. But I stand by my other comment; there's a time and place for scoring political and ideological points and maybe this isn't it. And by 'this board' I mean all of us as collective users. We have a responsibility to police ourselves at times.

I do agree in this instance, what happened in Southport shouldn’t enable anyone to politically point score, and nobody at all should want to.

We're mostly faceless on here 20s and, for me at least, mostly unknown.
a nice diplomatic answer. I'll assume you initiated the discussion with this faceless person then. I do think it reasonable that posters should know who the mods are and of course it would be unrealistic to think the mods act with total anonymity. There will be some posters/friends of on here who the mods will have revealed themselves to.

I didn't get overly involved in the Southport thread because clearly the timing of it and what was being said on both sides of the debate was in a way disrespectful to the tragedy that happened. But one particular poster was being hammered for making a very reasonable point even if it was in a clumsy manner. That's my view anyway.

I started the thread and then Admin contacted me with a PM.

No one got back to me about mine.

Double standards 🤣

We have an O/T board precisely to not clutter up the football stuff; why wish shit people leaving it?

If you don't like it, don't read it and just do football.

I've posted now and again on AVFTT for about 15 years and it always used to be decent.

The last 6 months / year though, this site has plumetted and is just not enjoyable any longer.

Everyone arguing always thinking they're right, and the "regulars" trying to shout down anyone that doesn't have the pc view.

Admins to blame as well cutting threads far too quickly.

Used to love this place, now I hate it.

Can I say NP that the footie forum is still worth a visit. Yes I'm one of the politicos but I really do treat it as two separate places. Don't give up on it completely.

Don’t give up on us!
The footy side is what really matters for us pool fans!

Yeah and there's f all really exciting happening really yet on the football side which is why people drift over here.

I've tuned out more than usual this summer but will get back into it again soon.

The lack of awareness on pricing in particular was a big part in that dissatisfaction.

You can always ignore or not react to these threads. I try to.

No shit. 😂

I think this part of the site is utterly miserable and political debate should be banned or someone set up a message board just for that away from AVFTT. I get dragged into it sometimes but here’s no satisfaction involved it’s just an argument not a debate.

We should stick to football and to off topics like other sports, music, films, TV, holiday advice help and support. The politics part is divisive and unpleasant and the place would be much better without it.

If I don't want to join a debate, I don't.
There is no point in getting angry at either a Post or a Poster.
There are many posts, and posters, I don't always agree with.
I don't get upset. Some I answer, and some I ignore.
Life is too short (especially for me 🤨 ) to lose your head over something you can't change.

That’s always been the problem with a few on here Dave you don’t agree with them or have a different view then the dummies get thrown out of the pram and the vulgar obscenities start coming your way.

Yep and the reporting of threads

I've lost count of how many times its been allowed for people to use hate speech like 'gammon' as an insult

It’s not totally clear or binary what is hate speech or allowed on here?

For example you can abuse gingers, baldies and fatties without rebuke but religion seems to be a no go area?

These threads are never a discussion. They are just point making and if it's not heard, it's made again but louder. Next time it's even louder with insults.
