After the Lord Mayor‘s Show from the Northampton board

With many people describing the game last night as a case of "After the Lords Mayors show" for Blackpool, the result got me thinking. It often seems that after a really good performance a bad result often follows. So I did a bit of research and my hunch proved to be correct, at least as far as the Cobblers are concerned.

Our highest ever score was 11-1, we lost the next game.
We've scored 10 goals 3 times, we never won any of the next 3 matches.
We've also scored 9 three times and of every occasion we lost the next match.
10 times we've scored 8, our record in the 8 following games was W2 D2 L6.
So in 17 games after scoring at least 8 goals in the previous game we've won just 2 times in the next.

I never saw any of those games but I have seen us score 7. Pretty even results after those games, W4 D3 L4.

However its when you look back to more recent times you get the most staggering stats.
The last time we scored 6 goals back in 2016 we didn't win again for 5 matches.
The previous 6 game in 2011 and wait for it, we didn't win again for 18 matches (Club record).
You then have to go back to 1988 for the previous time we scored 6 and we LOST the next 7 games (Club Record).
Amazing stats.

Didn't somebody once say "after the Lords Mayor show comes the shit cart." So be warned, the next time we score 6, be prepared for what follows.

Were our players jaded or did they think they were the bollocks after a big win at Portsmouth? Only they know.
From my perspective Northampton did a lot more running than our lot and played with more urgency.
Even our passing was slow and sluggish with not enough zip about it.
I said before the game that we should've made a couple of changes but the biggest issue was possibly our attitude.

I have had long had the theory that Pool always player better against better opponents and worse against teams that are worse. It isn't the top teams we should fear it's playing down against the bottom teams.
