Andy Lyons Mystery

How come he plays well against Forest and Bolton and plays well but cant get a game in the league especially when its Coulson/CJ keeping him out

If he’s not in Critchley’s plans then we should have offloaded him like we did with Dale.

And for the record i think he is good enough to be playing like people say another one of life’s mystery’s. 🤷‍♂️

I fear he has lost his confidence.
Against Bolton in cup all he did was pass back & often lost possession. Maybe trying too hard or a bit fearful making mistakes?

Lyons has been good in a couple of games, poor in a couple and then average in a few too. Plus everything that went on at the beginning of the season for him. I don't really think it's particularly strange that he's not playing regularly cos he hasn't really done enough to make that position his I don't think.

Maybe he's following the bosses instructions. The whole of the defence have looked a shambles most of the the season. All this side to side, back passing stuff must be down to what the manager and coaches are asking the players to do. Unfortunately the players at Blackpool FC are playing in league 1 for a reason.

Am I the only poster that thinks Andy isn't the best RB/LB/WB in the squad and the players that are selected ahead of him are actually better than him?
I'm not writing Andy off in any way, shape or form but I dont think he's first choice currently.
He needs to bulk up a bit IMO and add a bit of strength to his skill.

He is right footed Critch wants balance on the left and Gabriel is in better form than him and CJs pace has been a big asset this season. Lyon’s hasn’t looked himself in any of the games played although looked better in the cup, does he want away? Is it an attitude thing, who knows but he hasn’t set the world alight to be demanding a starting place.

Our left wing-back Connolly will be keeping him out🙄🤦‍♂️
There is no way that Connolly should have been named in the 18 against Stevenage if Lyons is fit.
We had Casey and Virtue on the bench to cover centre back and central midfield. Lyons should have been on the bench to cover left and right wing back but for some reason Connolly was picked!!
I think Connolly is probably playing 1 or 2 divisions higher than he should be. He can play in a variety of positions but in League 1 is he better than 5 out of 10 in any of them?

Connolly on the bench allows us to have another forward or attacking midfielder on there because he covers multi positions.
With playing three at the back you can't just have one person as cover.

As to Lyons for what I've seen live he's only had one decent game this season where he got MOM the rest he's been bang average.

Don't rate him on the left which makes sense since he isn't left footed but on the right I've always thought he's quality. Like that he chips in with goals too.

For Critchley he's clearly behind Hamilton and Gabriel on the right and now behind Coulson on the left.

Spot on… He was also pretty green in the Chanpionship too. People tend to focus on the positive aspects (especially when a player hasn’t been involved for a while) and he scored a few goals to his credit, but he’s another one who lacks discipline, gets caught out of position and (last season) was regularly responsible for goals conceded.

He’s got bags of potential and I’m sure we’ll see him make progress, but you’re absolutely right Insy, he’s behind other players on merit and there’s no big conspiracy.

No, it's not just you insy. Coulson has slotted in nicely at LWB & works well with Hubby (although Sat he held onto the ball a few times, got outnumbered & dispossessed). But overall he's first choice LWB. Gabriel thankfully looks nailed on at RWB. After Hamiltons spineless performance vs Stevenage, I'd only use him as an impact sub or in the front three due to injuries. Lyons would therefore be on the bench every game as backup for both wing backs, in my opinion.

Harsh being judged on merit when Critchley is playing him out of position like he has so many other players this season. With this crap formation, it's difficult to actually tell who are good players and who aren't. I've given up trying to work it out.

We have seen Gabriel, Lyons and Connolly at LWB this term. All of the are right footed, hence the signing of Coulson…. for balance. If he is going to play CJ, then play him there. That opens up RWB for either Gabriel or Lyons, both of whom have good attacking instincts.

I think that's a fair assessment. I also think AL lacks a bit of pace and at the moment, maybe a little fitness? Critchley seems to want extremely mobile wing backs, which obviously makes sense. I also agree with the view he's better right side than left.

I like him and hope he sticks around though.

Agree that Lyons has been very average this season but he gives wide options attacking and defending on both flanks that are superior to Connolly.
Byers and Virtue covered centre midfield, Casey covered centre back and Gabriel could move across and do a job there if needed.
It was Connolly or Lyons on the bench, Connolly was picked and it didn't allow for anymore attacking options on the bench.

Who covers for Husband?
Can JG play as a CB?

If you fill up one space on your bench putting someone like Connolly who covers multi positions is an absolute no brainer.

Gabriel can fill in at centre back, he's done it. Lyons can cover full back or wing back left and right. Putting Connolly on the bench on Saturday meant we pretty much had to play Gabriel and Coulsen for the 90 because nobody wants to see Connolly playing wide and trying to contribute something offensively!!
All the defensive positions were covered, Connolly was overkill.
He couldn't nail down any position in a starting 11 in an average league 1 side, don't see the point of putting him on the bench to give extra cover to what's already covered!

He should be more involved in league games.

Ahead of CJ at RWB when Jordy G was out? Of course. Ahead of CC at LWB when we had little option, without doubt.

He looked quite good last season and may just need a run of games to get back up to speed after all that's gone on. Him at RWB and JG ahead would be a good combination. CJ at LW if the game allows.

I've not seen Connolly play left side of the back 3 and do a good job so I'd be happy for Casey, Pennington or Gabriel to do it. Wouldn't be worse and might be better.
He's played most rounds in that position in the EFL cup and was excellent there against Bolton .

We obviously disagree about him, I thought he added next to nothing to the bench on Saturday and I think Lyons would've offered more.
I'd be very happy to see him leave, even more so if the rumour that he is paid £338,000 a year to not be able to nail down a position in League 1 is true.

He offer's defensive cover in many positions including DM and he's a better defender than Lyons.

Going forward he offers nowt total opposite of AL but it all can't be about attack when picking your bench before a game.

Why on earth Critchley played CJ at RWB when he had Lyons I have no idea. Showed plenty of potential last season and was one of our better players. I fear he will leave in the summer and show what he can do in his correct position at another club.
