Andy Lyons

When I’ve seen him he’s been outstanding, it’s baffling that he’s not even in the squad, let alone starting, which he should be. If he’s injured, ok, tell us, if he’s still having issues because of his father, I understand, but the club still should be telling us when he is likely to play, or if he’s not in the plans and why.

Definitely a strange one as he was one of our better players in the championship and there is no way Thompson should be picked over him.
I agree & even if his form dipped while his dad's illness wasn't public knowledge surely he should still now be at least on the bench and getting minutes to get back to where he was. Has a goal in him which we desperately needed yesterday.

If i remember pre season he wanted out, Critch fell out with him and he's not really played much this season obviously he had a bereavement too. Sums it up really, barring Gabriel he's a far better wingback than anything else we have. I reckon he will be gone in January.

Is this Chinese whispers or for real.
If he wants out then he needs to go, we only want fully committed players here, but it would be a crying shame as he was probably the only positive from last season, and is the most natural wing back on our books.

Hope the rumour about him wanting out is nothing more than that.
A very good young player who'll get better.

The only other thing I can think is that he's a lot better going forward than defending. That could impact on Critchley's decisions not to start him?
I agree that he's a great wing back and this formation surely suits him.

Critch seem to be more at ease using older players. Won't give Rob Apter a go . The Morecambe game will see ALOT of Yong talent on show but even if they impress he will not pick them for a league game. We are not going up and we are not going down so give the young guns a shot. DEFFINATLY ROB APTER !!!!!

It's a myth he's bad at defending to be honest. He's as good going forward as he is defending.

And Hamilton is good going forward and defending? Come on Dave.

Pre season that was the rumour, there was nothing concrete about that, or was there?

I’m not entirely sure it is a myth, I remember us conceding a few last season where Lyons had failed to close down effectively. So there was certainly some cause for question marks over his defensive qualities. By contrast he did score quite a few, so I don’t think the conclusions that he’s better going forward than he is defensively are unreasonable, based on what we’ve witnessed so far.

You’d expect him to be more competent at League 1 level though and it’s strange that he’s not getting much of an opportunity.

Reasonable point AR, but nope, I'm not saying that at all.
I was just suggesting that might be a reason Critch isn't starting AL, hence the question mark.
I'd certainly start AL in a wing back role if he's fully fit and ready after his recent family bereavement.

It's only my opinion of course ( as it's just the opinion of a couple of posters who disagree with me), but I still think he can improve defensively because he often doesn't get close enough to the winger to prevent crosses. I'm possibly being a little harsh because I rate him highly and hope we keep him - if the above rumor is true). I also don't usually single players out, but as this thread is called Andy Lyons, I didn’t have much choice

In these situations we tend to blame the manager over the player which is just utter guess work as no one knows what the lads attitude or work ethic is.

Lyon's will get his opportunity tomorrow I'd guess exactly what Kouassi did the last EFL trophy game against Liverpool U21 and then earned starts after that.

Lyons played and scored against Liverpool U-21. As stated previously he's the only specialist wing-back in the squad but can' get a game!

There didn’t appear to be any issues with his attitude or work ethic last season.

The club has absolutely no responsibility or reason to tell fans about private matters involving players.

If Lyons was playing on Saturday I'm fairly sure he would.have put the chance away at the back post that Hamilton made a mess of.
He might not be the best defensively but he gets up and down the pitch well and he keeps a cool head in the opposition penalty area.
Put Hamilton on the left where he can get half a yard on a defender and naturally whip in a decent early ball, and Lyons on the right where he might get some goals coming in at the back post and results should improve.

He is the one player on our books ideally suited to the wing back role, he is genuinely two footed and can play either right or left side so technically he would take the "inverted" wing back term to another level. He's got a real eye for goal too. I thought our recruitment team had been watching him for some time so I don't get that he's not playing as he wasn't a Critchley signing.

It’s the biggest mystery of the season. Injured, personal issues or Critch simply doesn’t like him perhaps we’ll never know until he’s loaned out in January. You don’t suddenly go from the standout player in a very poor championship team to not even making the squad in game 18 in L1🤔

i know he isn't fit yet but do you not think Gabriel could do the job?

Pre-season, not that I'm an expert, I had him down as "the one to watch"!

Something definitely not right as despite his so-called weaknesses in defending his other attributes far outweigh those and I can't understand how he is so often omitted in favour of others who are equally prone to defensive errors.

I do wonder as and when Gabriel gets fit whether CJ will move to the other wing as surely Critchley won't freeze him out too?!

Lyons was one of the few players to not look out of place in the championship
The problem is the manager, he will not put him on the bench to even look at alternatives

Yes Gabriel could certainly do the wing back role on the right but the point I was making is that Lyons can ably fill the role on both sides. Gabriel on the right and Lyons on the left would give us good balance. CJ as an impact sub when defences are tiring would do me.

Fair enough sorry i miss read your post, he wont use Lyons if he was going to he would already have done, in my opinion something has happened behind the scenes and his face doesn't fit for whatever reason, believe managers have a way of doing things and if you don't abide you find it very hard to get back into the fold

Needs Andy Bayes to ask the question

Ask what questions lets be honest you won't get anything from the manager or players its all behind the scenes

wont be playing Apter he plays for Tranmere on loan. Scored on Saturday as well.

Lyons was a BIG player at Shamrock Rovers. Voted best young player in the Irish League ahead of some really valuable youngsters. Prominent in the Europa league. We were very lucky to get him and his treatment at BFC seems to be shabby. Whatever has happened, and it could just be that Critchley didn't sign him so doesn't need him, the lad is a wasted talent with us. He's going to succeed somewhere and it would be sad it were not with us. It seems to me that Lyons and Gabriel would make an excellent pairing.

Favourite player last season - thought he showed real potential and actually voted him Player of the Season.
This idea that Critch is an amazing manager who nurtures and brings players on I genuinely believe is flawed!
As i said on an old post we will never know what goes on behind the scenes hence him only being considered when the lesser important games arrive like tonight, hopefully in time he will get a run but in my opinion it doesn't look good going forward.

Critch is absolutely useless and also treats people diabolically and everyone with half a brain can see it. Half the squad will leave in January.

Sort it out Sadler!

You're talking shite mate. Critch is a football genius, he's building for the future and we will dominate the division in the second half of the season. We just need some tweaks in January.
