SOUTHPORT FOOTBALL CLUB STATEMENT – 12 JULY 2022

Following the statement which the Club issued on 4 July arising out of inappropriate behaviour by a minority of fans during the recent pre-season friendly against Blackpool, and after consultation with Merseyside Police, the Club can confirm that it has today had cause regrettably to issue Club / stadium bans to a number of individuals, their behaviour having been considered in breach of The National League’s Ground Regulations. We will continue to assist Merseyside Police in their investigations into the incident.

I somehow doubt having seen them close up they even realised they were at a football game and I doubt very much if Southport's finances will be affected by the removal of these spotty louts!

It all seems to have been blown out of all proportion...a bunch of kids getting a bit above themselves and being met with a typically robust defensive response from real football supporters. It hardly prompted the need for the ref to go all over the top, tannoy lady to treat it like a Heysel Stadium job and all this publicity and club statements.

Southport have handled this appallingly. They should take more ownership with regards allowing those kids in their own end to move from stand to stand to confront and goad the pool fans rather than just putting the entirety of the blame on the kids themselves. Their stewarding also was obviously not up-to-scratch.

But instead they've issued banning orders to some misbehaving kids who otherwise could have well gone on to be supporters of the club in the longer term - something that non-league clubs can ill-afford to lose.
