Anybody been to Porto, Portugal ?

Just a warning as it can get cold in the evenings.

We were there in June and it got down to about 12c at night which we were not prepared for.

Not sure if that’s usual or not.

You will have a brilliant time , we went to Lisbon last year and wasn’t half as good.

I was trying to think what made it so good, what to recommend on top of what has already been said, but it’s just a great city , cool vibe, great food.

I highly recommended a restaurant called Porto. 4 It only has 10 covers, Tiny inside, They cook right in front of you. Very intimate, and you can chat with the chef and waitress as they cook. Very reasonably priced too. I’d recommend booking as they turned away around 30 people as we sat there.

We were in Porto for 5 days so had enough time to do a trip up the Douro valley…. More port an wine tasting

Went for the Euro Nations Finsls I’m 2019.

A great City full of character.

Lots to see old buildings and obviously it is the “Home Of Port”.

Plenty of good eateries too.

Enjoy, you’ll be lucky to get the City to yourself as opposed to thousands of pissed up ducks shouting In-ger-land hanging around till 2pm in the morning on a day the team are not even playing🙄🙄

We were considering going to Lisbon and then I read a piece on the net that suggested that 72% of people who had been to both, preferred Porto. Thanks for your recommendation.

Fantastic place, driving over there in September to visit some friends who moved there a few years ago. Food is fantastic, the times I've been the hotels were top notch. Just a good place to be. Was giving serious consideration to moving there a few years ago.
Try one of the port tours, they are worth it, if you like port anyway

Love the stuff !

Went a few years ago for the Nation's League. Honestly, didn't like the city itself that much. Not helped by England fans kicking off a day before we arrived, I suspect. Stayed in a mountain range about half an hour out of the city which was beautiful with church bells echoing down the valley. Don't know whether it's a local delicacy or not but the wild boar was the best.

Fantastic city
Make sure you go over the river to ghia where all the port houses are.
We did a tuk tuk tour which was great lots of great restaurants for me intrigo restaurant was the best for me.
Love the messias port 10 year old.

Some of our photos

Went for a friends 50th a few years back, as mentioned above, fantastic city, we stayed on the Port side of the river in Gaia, in the best accommodation we have ever stayed in (I can give you details if you like), you can walk to most of the Port Houses. (Taylors, Grahams, Cockburns etc) who all do tours. We did a helicopter flight over the city & the football stadium, which again was quite reasonable for a 20min flight.
There is also a bookstore that JK Rowling worked in, & is claimed to be inspiration for some of the books/interiors, & I think the interior was used in some of the films?

Most people go to the beaches south of Porto . Espinho is quite popular, it's about a 35 minute train ride, train from São Bento station (the one Wizzard mentioned), Aveiro line. If you need or want any more tips or help, leave me a message and I'll do my best. I live in Aveiro but go to Porto quite often.

Beaches of Gaia are closer to Porto than Espinho. Madalena, Valadares, Aguda among others. The train to Aveiro stops at Valadares and some trains stop at Madalena and Aguda.

Very nice part of the world. Only been around that area a couple of times a long while ago
but remember very nice

Great city.

The station is interesting as mentioned, especially the tiles. They tell the story of Phillipa of Lancaster's marriage to King John of Portugal and the start of our lasting alliance.
The wine lodges are a great way to spend a morning. We visited Taylor's - walk across the lower level of the bridge, along the river then up to the lodge. We've been great fans of white port ever since. Nice with tonic at this time of year.
Back on the Porto side of the river there are plenty of decent, fairly priced restaurants.
If you've got time take a trip up the Douro, you might get as far as the vineyards. I think some trips offer a boat up and the railway back - the railway follows the river to Pinhao and beyond.

Booked in for the Tuesday and Pigs cheeks are on the menu ! ** get in ! Thanks so much for the recommendation, looking forward to it already !

A wonderful place to visit, and as Wiz has already said the concourse in the Railway Station should be visited. Wine and particularly Port tasting is a great thing to do and there are loads of small cafes and bars on the river side . I met a wonderful woman there, but she was a bit skinny for my liking.

Another delicacy is a meat sandwich with a fried egg on top in a bowl of soup, served with a plate of chips called a Francesinha. Suprisingly good but can vary from one restaurant to another.

I had one of those (without the egg), dripping in melted cheese and gravy, up near the station. I didn't need to eat again, all day. Nice!

Seasider53, I'm currently in Porto. Your recommendation of Porta 4 was bang on the money ! The food was amazing as was the wine. Thank you so much ! Loving this city.
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it. if anyone else visits Porto I can highly recommended this place, only has 10 covers and you watch the chef cook your food.
