Ashes First Test Edgbaston 16-20 June Thread

I didnt agree with the declaration. Score as many as poss seems to make sense to me. Unless we get a wicket or two obv.

Yeah but there’s that old adage - do what the opposition don’t want you to do. The last thing the Aussie openers wanted was to come out for a few overs tonight. After years of hum drum English test cricket this is fantastic stuff.

True but it was counter productive.

Agree with Athers.

Aussies will get 500+ on this wicket against an ageing attack lacking much variation and a rusty red ball spinner.

Great entertainment though as usual with ashes series in England

Absolutely agree with this. It's frustrating watching Stokes throw away his wicket (knew it was coming after the first couple of deliveries), but I think sometimes he's forcing the point that the method matters more than his stats. And I can get behind that. As Kurt says, it'll go wrong every now and then but we're good to watch at the min.
The weird thing is that Stokes is the world's most unlikely Mike Brierly. His record as captain is terrible. On numbers alone since being captain he's absolutely not worth his place. But you'd never ever want us to be without him because he's utterly transformed this team.

It's taken a legend of T20 appointed as coach, several of the best T20 players in the world and Joe Root to make test cricket exciting. Great stuff.

We should have batted on. We'd have a bigger lead going into today.
Or they'd have got 2 wickets and Jimmy would have padded up unnecessarily.

It's overcast this morning, if they'd have got a wicket last night we'd be calling it genius. Best time to be bowling, is this morning. So an extra 20/30 runs last night would make little difference.

True ish. But we'd be 40 or 50 runs further ahead this morning.

Maybe but you're forgetting the new ball was due in 2 overs also, that changes the ability to be smashing it around trying to get quick runs.

Still makes sense to me, even if Australia are ahead at the end of their innings.

I didnt realise the new ball was due. Fair enough.

Plus, in declaring, we denied them the chance of getting Root out, which I bet pissed them off a little bit. And anything that pisses the Aussies off is fine by me! Having said that, I'm not sure they'd have got him out if we'd been batting all week.

Stokes risk/reward calculator is quite unlike any other human beings. And I love it.

So many boring captain wouldn't even have made that calculation.

Thing about him is, he's not interested in not losing. Only winning.

Just been debating Joe Root. My mate who is Bermudan, says he’s the best batsman of this last decade. Big accolade!

Then I got thinking. We don’t give our players the recognition at times as we look at players like Kohli or Steve Smith in a different light.

Root has to play more games in English conditions so that lowers the average. He also has batted in poor teams that were under scoreboard pressure and rarely had the pressure off him. Different to playing on a flat road in Mumbai.

Root is incredible. He's gone up a notch from about 4/5 years back when he was Very, very good, but not Kohli or Smith - now he's just peeling of big score after big score without it even feeling like he's trying. I'm struggling to think of anyone English I've known who gives that sense of certainty. You just always feel as if he will score, because he's got so many ways to score. It's so hard to tie him down and he's completely unfussed by needing to dominate. He's happy just rotating the strike but also happy hitting ridiculous 6s.

The only dip he had was when he not only had to be the only one to score runs but to make every decision as well. Which shite 2 opening batsmen should we go with this time? Coming into bat after 4/5 overs every game must be draining too. Pressure like nothing else.

Best of our English generation by a distance. Better than Kohli and Williamson but a par with Smith.

Yeah i totally agree. Its brilliant. He played in the side that kept losing and worked out why and had the balls to tear it all up. Let the players play their own game and enjoy it. Fire them up snd take the fear of losing away. I was just a bit shocked by the declaration on day one. Could go either way. But so much better for cricket.

Well let's see what happens with Jim and Broady. If they get it swinging around, the declaration could be a masterstroke.

He's not even interested in drawing. As for his own stats it's as though he has no regard for his own numbers, whereas most cricketers are obsessed by them.
Oh, and see you later Warner 😀

That's what I mean... it's like he'd rather lose trying to win than draw a game.

Yes! Broady!!!

Where are all those declaration naysayers now! We could be watching Anderson still avoiding the ball instead of two in two deliveries!
