Autumn Statement

I think some on here think we should have uneducated, illiterate people in government, rather than people who have had a good education. I’d rather have intelligent people running the country, than someone who knows how to knock a nail in.

Personally, I`d rather have wise, conscientious and moralistic people running the country.

"Good education" is not a high priority for me...

Agree, but they need a bit more than just decent people, I have a reasonable education and I think I’m wise, definitely conscientious and moralistic, but I don’t think I could run the country.

What skills do you think Liz Truss has that you don't?

My dog is more capable than her.

Cameron, Sunak and Johnson have all had ‘good’, or should that be expensive, educations.
All have proved to be spectacularly inept as Prime Ministers.

I think the COVID enquiry has shown what some so called intelligent well educated people actually are. Boris couldn't understand R number, doubling time or exponential growth. I'm pretty sure that the bulk of older kids at State schools can cope with the concept of all these.

The ability to utter crap in Latin and be confident is not a sign of being educated or intelligent.

Years ago, there was always a number of doctors, engineers, teachers and lawyers in Parliament, we now seem to have mostly those who want to be politicians first and foremost.

I hope you don`t mind me politely asking, Cuthbert:

So, Corporation Tax is on a sliding scale (19% to 25%) and to pay it at the highest rate at 25% you have to declare profits of over £250,000.

Do you think that is not fair?

And would you really think of "packing it in altogether as its not worth the long hours..."?

I agree with you that this government is many things, but I personally don`t have a great problem with Corporation Tax rates...
Checked it out. We are paying 26.5% on anything above £50,001. Pay VAT of 20% on about 95% of our earnings and 40% tax on any dividend on earnings . The tax man gets well over 50% of this. This country is absolutely f@@@ed with these lunatics in charge. This is a tax crazy Government and out of control. Poverty is endemic we need a rethink.

Government finances are quite simple really, income is relatively fixed as political suicide to increase taxes so the question is with a limited pot how to allocate spending. The NHS takes a big chunk and it’s interesting that labours Wes Streeting wants reform before upping NHS budgets. Rachel Reeves first budget will be interesting. 2024 will be an exciting year for UK politics

I don’t see an election before late 2024, or perhaps even end of January 2025 myself.

It could be, but if there is still a big gap in the polls by then (not saying there definitely will be) why would they call one so early?
Because coming out of winter voters are in a better frame of mine than in the autumn. The large gap in the polls now could easily come down especially when labour have to spell out their policies.

Perhaps, we’ll see what happens, I think autumn or January are more likely unless things change suddenly.

I too think they will stay as long as they can, milking us for every penny and tax break they can, enriching their donors, knowing full well the current generation of Tories are pariahs.

I would love to be wrong, but tukeys don't vote for Christmas.

Take a look a Sunak's attempt to use a hammer at Jewellery Store in West Yorkshire last week and tell me he can knock a nail in !
To be fair with his wealth I was impressed he knew what a hammer was.
