Back passing

Forget the Ref, the injuries, the formation, and definitely forget this constant back passing.
How many times this season have we had a free kick just past the half way line, 3 passes and it's back with our keeper.
How many times did we put ourselves under pressure with dangerous careless back passing last night.
When we get the ball in their penalty area, we have a chance of scoring.
When we play the ball back in our area, they have a chance of scoring.
There have been plenty of posts regarding this slow ponderous build up which always involves a few back passes.
Why because we are that slow their defense have time set and mark our players.
Because players are told to keep possession the only passing options are back which is the one area we should avoid
It's boring and rubbish to watch. Start playing some football with a bit of energy we have the players

It’s so that Critchley can say we had most of the possession, the fact it’s useless possession in our own half doesn’t show in the stats.

I agree, especially last night's performance. It just wasn't working and the opposition had a plan to deal with it effectively.
Critch should have realised this, especially in the second half, and changed his tactics accordingy.
Edit. You do not get points by 'winnng' the possession stats game.

I'm guessing the idea is to draw their players in order to exploit space in midfield and out wide, but it doesn't work for us because we don't move the ball quickly enough. All it does is invite a high press, resulting in the ball going back to the keeper and going long, hoping that Madine can lay off to a partner who is hopefully close enough to receive the knock down (which often isn't the case I'm afraid).

As we rely so much on the wide players, we're too often outnumbered in central midfield, so Dougall and Stewart /Connelly /Robson usually go backwards again, rinse and repeat, and without the creative midfielder, the forwards aren't getting much decent service. So often we end up leaving it to Marv to play the ball up to the wings. I really like Marv, but I don't think he's a great ball player.

It's slow, ponderous, repetitive and predictable. It leaves us with no element of surprise and little opportunity to get a telling ball through to our forwards. If that is what passes for top class coaching these days then God help us - yawnsville.

What really pisses me off also is 11 men in the box for corners. Completely unneccessary. CJ isn't going to win a dominant header, but what he will do is require 2 defenders to look after him. Same with Anderson.

No idea what it's all about but it's pretty bad.

I've been saying this all season...pretty little triangles at the back just invite pressure and forest was a good example of other teams finding us out.

We got our asses handed to us by them and we haven't learnt from the times when other clubs have seen our weakness...is so frustrating to watch. You can almost predict the route our passing will take...last night the commentary kept saying we had so much possession in the 2nd half...which is fine but the nobbers were loving it cos it was all in our own half

Exactly - and if Grimmy or Maxwell do catch it from a corner or free kick - the opportunity for a quick break by throwing out to a player for a counter is totally lost. I think we credit some managers and coaches with insights they don't possess.

The only reason the ball ends up getting passed sideways and backwards is because there is so little movement from the players in front of the defenders. Midfielders and forwards are too easily marked to pass the ball to. The only other option is a long ball forward with more potential for losing possession.

Totally agree on the 11 players back for corners. Little chance of a quick counter attack, gives the impression we can’t defend, and the ball will always come back at us if we clear.

The pass back that sticks in my mind was towards the end, Keogh couldn't find anyone showing for the ball, went mental at them and ended up knocking it back to maxi, who hoofed it up the pitch.
My question is, if Keogh can't find someone to pass to, why not hoof it forward anyway???
The keeper's going to do it anyway, just from 20 yards further back!
Retaining possession is 50:50 at best in both circumstances but just hoofing it yourself loses possession 20 yards further up the pitch AND saves a potential goalie miskick.
Keogh wasn't alone in it of course, they all do it and it frustrates the hell out of me

I'll add to the tactics discussed above, last night JB & CJ were ineffective, why not swap them over now & again, just to keep the opposition guessing. Minor thing but why not. Plus Madine & Anderson can not press quickly. I do wonder if all the sideways boring risky passing at the back is simply to waste time, can you imagine if both teams adopted this 0-0 🥱 🥱 🥱 🥱
