Ben Heneghan - Instagram post

Would take him back in a heartbeat. I know he might not fit the mold of a Critchley CB, but was one of our better players on a poor team last year who has experience in League One and could absolutely be coached into Critch's mold.

I think that's very harsh on Expetita, he has been pretty good from what i have seen.
Maybe so but is he as good a defender and a leader at the back as Ben not a flaming chance.
Would he be a better player working along Ben hell yes.
Out of contract so just go and get him FFS.

Well maybe Nottingham is out of position but who ever is in needs to toughen up and start imposing their presence on the opposition

We definitely need a commanding centre half who can organise and has experience at this level and above. That is not Heneghan for me, slight improvement on what we have but im sure theres better out there.
I never get this obsession with ex players.

You don't get the obsession with a younger and better centre back than Nottingham, who we know loves the club and wants to be here? Weird eh.

I don't Kurt, yes he's younger and a slight improvement but as i said in my opinion we can do better.
As for wanting to be here , he just wants a club at the moment and probably thinks this is his best option .

Might not fit the Critch style of play but he’s a defender who can defend. Fits the bill
What is his style of play exactly that Ben doesn't fit?

We want a CB that doesn't fuck up as much as Nottingham has, dominate the box. And crop up with a few goals from corners. Ben is a substantial improvement to Notts.

We need a leader in defence someone who can organise not just a better defender than what we've got so no guarantees when bringing someone in.
Ben fits the role get rid of Thornley and will work within the salary cap no brainer get him back.

Whichever way you look at it, Heneghan is a better CB than Nottingham. That's been clear for 2 seasons. That doesn't mean we HAVE to sign BH if someone better suited to what NC wants is available, but if there isn't anyone else out there that we can identify or can afford, then surely it's a no brainer to bring in a better player than those you currently have.

Correct he's better than any centre half we've got and his poor perfomances tied in with us being crap and Grayson getting potted.

Why would we sign another right sided centre back? I think Marv is going to keep that place and Nottingham will be his back up. You could argue we should have bought Heneghan instead of Marv, but we didn't. And Marv may well end up the better, quicker, player of the two. We have finite resources, a salary cap, and a need to strengthen elsewhere.

Ekpiteta looks like an accident waiting to happen, I'm not sure he's been great over the 4 games including Stoke. Either way, right footed or not, Heneghan improves the squad - he and Husband together would be infinitely better than Marv and Nottingham and centre half.

Maybe, but there would be a lack of pace that could leave them very exposed in this system, surely? Heneghan wasn't great last season, either.

Are Nottingham and Ekpiteta *that* quick? They strike me as the type of defenders who do their best work recovering from a situation they've created themselves through lack of concentration.

They recover cos they are pretty quick, I think. The mistakes need to be cut out, of course. I think the problem gets exaggerated, though. Saturday wasn't good. I think the lack of method up front is probably a bigger issue. But both ends of the team need work, for sure.

Wouldn't we have signed Heneghan by now if we were interested? Would we change our minds now?

Nottingham is a capable backup and would probably benefit by having a good leader next to him. I'm not putting Ekipeteta down but he also needs time to adapt. It was clear we lacked a CB and RB so we shouldn't be entirely surprised our defence looks shaky at times.

What Saturday proved, the second goal in particular, is that you can have all the ball playing defenders you like but if they can’t tackle then they aren’t good defenders.

Is Heneghan what we need, that’s for Critchley to decide. Is he better and more experienced than Nottingham & Ekpiteta, absolutely.

I know times are difficult in the world of football but I’m surprised he hasn’t got a club yet.

It does make me wonder what the approach has been by the club this year for CB's. I've seen a couple of times people comparing our approach to Liverpool whereby we'll only buy/loan when the right player is available, rather than purchase as a 'short term' fix. However, if he was to return does that mean we've missed out on all our targets while reverting back to tried and tested? Got to admit, I'm very surprised he hasn't found a club yet. Earlier on in the year, he was being linked with a host of Championship clubs, including those down the road..😤

I must say, I do believe the approach of one ball-playing centre half alongside a ball-winning (old school) defender is the best approach. A couple of people have mentioned it earlier, but we want our defenders to defend, even if that does mean we lose out on some of our build-up approaches. If we can have a back four which the team can trust then I think it'll see us come on leaps and bounds. Watching us on Saturday, it didn't seem like the squad had much confidence every time they ran at our defence.

Would it have made a difference if we had?
Obviously not but you had people like hertfordseasider raving about him as if he were Franco Baresi. Ridiculous but mind you he was a big Nuttall fan as well. I know it’s all about opinions but really

He did look like Baresi in the first half against Liverpool. Granted that was a bit of a shock.

People just want the lad to be good. I wanted Matty Blinkhorn to be good, I posted on here or somewhere after an LDV game in 2004 or sometime that I'd seen the future and the future was Blinks.

See also Simon Wiles and I was a big advocate of giving Andy Gouck a chance.

I want these players to be good. Sometimes that blinds us but there we go. It is what it is and he's not looked at all solid since pre season. He's had a chance, not taken it and hopefully someone will now grasp the shirt and make it theirs.
