Best England performance for 25 years

I don't often go overboard about England, but I believe that tonight was our best performance for a generation. I know Ukraine were poor, but to be so dominant in a quarter final of a major tournament was so so impressive. Remember Cameroon, Sweden or Spain, our recent 3 quarter finals/ We just got through. We strolled through today. I haven't agreed with team selections, but thanks Gareth and the team for a perfect night tonight.

I'm going to be pedantic, and say that England's best performance in 25 years was in Munich in 2001 :) .....but I agree with the sentiment of the post, we were very good tonight. It's very hard to pick holes in a 4-0 win against anyone when in a quarter final of a tournament.
 
We seem to go though the same process at almost every knockout competition…

1. The England Never Win Anything Stage
2. The That was a Half Decent Performance Stage
3. The We Might Have an Outside Chance of Winning This Stage

4. The Wallowing in Our own Hubris Phase
5. The Reality Check Stage

All true - but we were pretty ** good tonight, so it's not too much to ask to dare to dream just a little 🏝️😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
 
Ukraine were poor, but you can only beat what's in front of you.
Denmark will be a far sterner test but I believe for once we have a genuine chance of winning a tournament.

I agree except that we also strolled through against Sweden in the world cup, they didn't have a single shot and hardly got on the ball
 
Always makes me smile when we win and the usual comments “ the opposition were poor or weak”.

Or :ThIs league is weak.

It was a quarter final so give Ukraine some merit! They came back from 2-0 down against the Dutch.

The victory in Spain was a fantastic performance too. We were 3-0 up at half time against a very strong Spanish team.

They WERE weak tho. Absolutely pathetic, in fact.

It was a dominant and efficient performance. The best of the tournament - possibly, although Germany were a better test.

Bu the OP is getting carried away, like a lot of people. We are a decent team playing in a surprisingly average competition. If we beat two more difficult opponents next week, that is the time for praise.
 
The players don’t look like they usually do in interviews….overly excited, we’ve exceeded expectations etc. They all look and sound like they know they are good enough.solidly confident in what’s going on. The clean sheets are working wonders. We look like we believe we can get to the final.
 
It was a good performance, no doubt made much easier by scoring in the 4th minute. It was game over from that point, another factor was Ukraine had played extra time the other night and I don't think there energy levels were great. Onwards and upwards one game at a time. We shouldn't look past Denmark yet.

I meant the Euro 96 quarter final v Spain that we won on pens
 
I must admit I made a personal choice NOT to expect too much from England during this tournament. This is because of many years of expecting too much and achieving nothing. However having watched the last two games against Germany and the Ukraine I am seeing and feeling something which I have not experienced since Euro 96. I went to all the games at Wembley and there was after a dodgy start a real sense of belief and togetherness within the squad and the country. This current squad is so much better in terms of quality and depth in numbers and players who can play in various positions. After Saturday nights result I can see the resemblance to the current Pool squad and the previous teams that gained us promotion. You can see it and feel it in the players performance and attitude both on and off the pitch. I truly believe we can do it.
 
Not at all but it was a convincing win and our keeper wasn’t the MotM

congrats to G Southgate and all the players and a handful of fans
