Yeah remember that match and running into the pitch, 4-1 at home to Leyton Orient...good times 😁

Goosebumps reading that.

Surprising that considering how close the Chisnall's were to Billy, the authors father stuck by the Oystons after the way he was treated.

And makes me detest Ian just that little bit more.

He was manager of the club when I first started going in the 1990/91 season. Loved the guy. That fist pump. RIP King Billy. Favourite Pool manager of all time.
Ditto. Couldn't have put it any better. Think my first game was 1992/93 at home and we drew 2-2 with Brighton. Was hooked from that moment.
Always remember Sir King Billy 👑

Timely reminder that sometimes the best managers are not at first the most obvious choice.

Yes my favourite all time BFC manager, he epitomised everything I like.
Honest, passionate, he genuinely cared about people.
RIP Billy. Legend

"Billy Ayres tangerine army" used to echo around Bloomfield Road and Billy would shake his clenched fists and grit his teeth in acknowledgement. What a fantastic manager and human being he was. His sacking by Oyston was hurtful and pathetic. Craig is always very good (& knowledgeable) when he's supporting his Oyston loving, mistake riddled dad on radio Lancs.

Always remember his interview after the Torquay defeat at Wembley where he said losing that night was the worst day of his life

I was just falling out of the beautiful game then King Billy came along and change everything. Home and Away hardly missed a game and when he got sacked that was me with the Oyscums.
Next 2 seasons fat sam had loads to spends.
Can you image where we would of been if Billy was given the money to spend.
Top bloke a truly top Gentleman always and time to speak.
Gone but never forgotten
Billy Ayres Tangerine Army

If I had a time machine, I think I'd go back to that era and watch us beat West Brom at Bloomfield in 92/93.

King Billy keeping us up those two seasons was something special and as I remember, the rumour was he was sacked to be replaced by Peter Reid who then thought better of it. No idea of that was true or not.

Is there anything in the ground named after him?

Its funny how some managers just fit at certain clubs ... King Billy was one of these for us ... cant believe how young he was when he died 😥

Very nice article.
There are only 4 managers in my lifetime that have warranted the "tangerine army" tag after singing their name.
Alan Brown
Ian Holloway
Sam Ellis
King Billy.

Oh to have a man like him managing the team now.
There are only two Kings of Bloomfield Road though!
