Blackpool - Horrible Place

just been on the Millwall forum and the usual shit hole, horrible place is being churned out by the aways who attended Saturdays game. This is the common theme from a lot (who comment) after their trip to the Seaside.

Are we blinkered? Yes i see some deprived areas like most towns but as. an away football fan, what more do you want? Boozers galore, fun things to do, the Sea, the Tower, etc etc. Other places we visit are soulless, one or two pubs we can stop in and the grounds situated miles from anywhere.

It’s a stigma we are stuck with and doubt it will ever change on the foreseeable but it doesn’t half piss me off.

Blackpool is a fine town and there is still a lot to be proud about. Sadly these people only walk through a short area and it can be highly comical listening to other fans attacking the town who come from some dreadful places. The truth is though that Blackpool has been neglected for far too many years by the politicians and needs investment including housing stock.

I think it's the surrounding roads round the ground they'll remember most - Central Drive, Prom end of Lytham road. Yep, based on that I'd agree with them. But! It's not reflective of the rest of the town, nor the surrounding areas and I agree Spion, there are very few places in this country that have anywhere near as much to offer as Blackpool, Indeed many parts of the rest of the country (Millwall definitely included!) make central drive look like the champs elysees!

Just walked through the area from Talbot Road bus station to Devonshire Square , not sure of all the streets , my God that was depressing !

Some truth in what they've said. Talbot Road, Central Drive, Lytham Road near the ground, Dixon Road and around it are all hell holes. Area around Chappel Street isn't great either. Apart from that, Blackpool is as good a place as any to live in. I get why away fans slag it off because they will only see a few run down streets and assume it's all like that. It's hilarious when say, Luton fans slate it though.

They're Morons (and yes I get it that it's mostly just a footy chant)
The fans who trot out the usual "shit hole" line are often also found on social media to be taking selfies with the tower, or one of the piers, or the pleasure Beach, behind them.

I've loved living on the GC for 60 years (so far). I've no desire to live anywhere else either.

I liked the retort we sometimes sing back to them (using the same Sloop John B tune),

"we know where you're from
You're having a laugh"

That was to Stoke fans, but it could apply to areas of most places.

Kop sang Daytrippers go home on Saturday.

Unique to us and we should sing it more often.

I think some areas around the ground are pretty neglected and if that's all I saw I'd probably think the same really. It's a shame that the ground is pretty much in the middle of it all but on the flip side it could be a blessing too if the club works with the council iro improvements and developments. There is a lot of potential in those areas, an East stand/plaza area revoe redevelopment for one.
Let's be honest though, londoners talking about sh1t holes, gimme a break. A lot of London is cess pit.

I honestly could not give a flying f what other teams fans think or chant etc, every town has shite areas, not every town has the other stuff, been away 20 years but they have done a terrific job with the prom oppo the golden mile. Fans of other clubs cream when the get Bpool away especially on a bank holiday weekend, Brummie's fans went mad when the fixtures came out for this season.

Plus any place that is a shit hole starts to moan when gentrification sets in and says where have all the locals gone.

Can't foresee a day when gentrification sets in in Blackpool.

Blackpool has some if the poorest areas in Britain. It needs better support. We need a more equal distribution of wealth across the UK. An actual levelling up. Not the Boris bollox.

But Blackpool has the coastline, parks, a zoo, good areas to live, many good things. All places have redeeming features.

It's a bit more complicated than that I think. Let's not look down on people cos we think we are better eh?
I’m not, I’m talking from experience of dealing with many of these people, some of course, are genuinely in that situation through no fault of their own, but from what I’ve seen, most in Blackpool are bumming around because they want to

If Blackpool's a shithole what the feck is their town/city in comparison? A hellhole? I think I would keep quiet if I was them

We've seen where they live

I'm an exile and love going back to Blackpool. Yes, it has its deprived areas, but so does every sizeable town in the UK. Moreover, how many towns have what Blackpool has? Three piers, a theme park, one of the most famous towers in the country, a golden coast, trams and the home of the playoff kings 😀. In comparison, Preston for example has a big bus station!
And a stunning promenade stretching from Starr Gate to Fleetwood over 12 miles worth!

I worked for ten years as a property buyer across the UK, relatively few places better than the sunshine coast. Most of the junkies have come from Scotland/Liverpool/Manchester and the likes, they bring our mortality rate down. when totting up figures for drugs, death, poverty etc they should judge on where a person was born not where they decided to reside.

It bothered me for years when people slag off our FANTASTIC Town but I just laugh now. We have our dodgy parts like EVERY town and city. But millions come here year after year. The greatest Town on the planet. END OF.

Most places have their pros and cons

There are deprived areas in all towns and cities including London

Bermondsey is hardly Beverly Hills

Just to add I remember in the 70s playing some London club. Load of pool fans 'singing knees up mother brown' and walking around in circles like bez...they completely lost it. So funny to see. Should bring it back.

Blackpool IS in parts a sh#thole, mired in 1950,s/60,s faded gradour. My daughter and her hubby came to the Pigeon show to do a documentary and luvved every minute of it. The live in Brighton and couldn’t get over the Pool. Her comments today were and I quote “ Blackpool!! Everybody laughs, all the food is fried !! and we had an absolute ball” Once the Town-is rejuvenated it will be the Vegas of the North. Something it should have been years ago barring Mr Blair. I just think it's more complicated than that, myself. Learnt behaviour. Etc. I'm not saying everyone is innocent but we don't tread in others shoes and I prefer not to judge. People don't tend to choose drugs and benefits from a position of strength in my experience. Not most people anyway.

We go away quite often & whilst it’s for the variety of scenery etc we always comment oh there’s nothing like that round here but you’d have no problem back in Blackpool, whether it be food entertainment or what. This town takes some beating. I personally don’t take offence at away fans doing what away fans generally have been doing for years.

Yes. Margaret changed the rules so your housing benefit could be transferred to other locations, enabling thousands of long term unemployed with health issues to move to the coast.

Cheers Maggie.

it’s not just away fans though any forum or even on tv have digs at the Gold Coast but yeah fuck em

The town had it’s best summer season last year since the early 1980s l believe and the millions who flock here every year all can’t be wrong! I worked with a German guy in Munich who brought his family over for a weeks holiday a few years back and they loved it 😊

"Seven miles of golden sands" - do we still use that one? It's imprinted on my brain since being a four year old on Coop Street.

Of course it's a shithole in parts, so is every other large conurbation in the country, at least we don't have the endless sink estates of Preston, Manchester etc...

I personally wouldn't swap South Shore for anywhere else, other towns don't have the sense of space you find around FY4 (and other FY areas), the wide streets, the air, the beach...other large towns in the UK generally feel hemmed in and stuffy to me.

I can get to the Lakes in an hour, North Wales in 2, Loch Lomond is a morning's drive away....I still feel very happy when taking that turn for the M55 on my way home though.

I don't want the town gentrifying, I moved out of Lytham for that very reason.

I was born in Blackpool and spent my early years growing up there until we moved to St.Annes which is still part of the Gold Coast to me.
When I come over for the home games I try to arrive early so I can park up within reasonable distance of the ground ( a ten minute walk at most) and weather permitting walk past it to the prom for the sea breeze( sometimes a bit more😉) and the view.
There is no doubt the promenade has been improved so so much and looks fantastic.Unfortunately the streets leading back to the ground are to be honest a sad sight to see with B&B s trying very hard and looking fine only to be next door to “ goodness knows what”.
These areas clearly need a lot of redevelopment and should be prioritised for this.
Having said all that Blackpool is certainly not a shithole as visiting fans like to sing because it is a special place and always will be to me and if they took the trouble to have a wider look round they’d soon realise it certainly is not.

Compared to Bermondsey where their home (on the wrong side of the river too) Blackpool is paradise with vista’s

I think most Millwall fans are like Fulham fans just visit the ground once a fortnight and live all over London

I know loads of ‘their fans’ and none of them go and they are all white in a black dominated area so they don’t attract or try to attract the true locals

People call it a shithole yet constantly decide to come here. I’ll accept it from some fans but having the likes of Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Millwall fans say it is laughable considering they make Chernobyl look like the Bahamas
