Artificial intelligence tool reveals two Lancashire towns are happiest in UK

A facial recognition tool has been used to analyse more than 300,000 Instagram posts to find out the level of happiness in various areas of the UK.

According to facial recognition on Instagram

1 Blackpool; 67.5; 72 per cent

2 Derry-Londonderry; 66.8; 70 per cent

3 Preston;65.5; 67 per cent

4 Dundee; 64.5; 64 per cent

5 Bath; 63.7; 62 per cent

6 Midlothian; 63.3; 61 per cent
 
Least happy

1 Rotherham -82.1 per cent

2 Holywood -52.1 per cent

3 Leicester -47.2 per cent

4 Manchester -42.4 per cent

5 London -27.3 per cent

6 Bristol -11.5 per cent

7 Milton Keynes -11.5 per cent
 
Apparently, Preston was bombed during WW2 causing £30's worth of improvements.
Just to add, that in my 20yrs+ working for McAlpines, my first contract was the construction of the M55 with the main office on Lightfoot Lane in Preston and a smaller office in Kirkham.No prizes for guessing that i got the shitty end of the stick.

Dunno about with smiles but Preston and other local areas benefit from being close to Blackpool.

Think about it, if Blackpool didn't exist there'd be so much less to do in the northwest for kids etc. Tons of fun to be had in Blackpool.

People like to moan about Blackpool but they keep coming for fun activities, take that away and clearly there's less fun to be had.
 
You imagine most pictures on Instagram people post in Blackpool are people on holiday or on the lash - you're typically pretty happy partaking in either of those things.

As for Preston, only explanation I can think of is the smile of a recent visit to Blackpool still remains on their faces. Can't be any other logical explanation for them to be happy.
 
Manchester number 4 in the unhappy list, maybe its because they have to pay London prices on North West wages when they go out!
Heaven knows they're miserable now!!
 
I hope that result is not seen as a "problem" for anybody on here. Interesting to see any conclusions reached by AI facial recognition experts and the assumptions behind them.

In Blackpool, posting on instagram, they're either drunk or zooted on mind-drugs. Hence the smiles. A true Blackpool resident lurches from street to street with a big, grey, weathered face, wind and rain crashing against their furrowed brow.
 
I'm trying really, really hard to think why a Preston resident might crack a weak grin let alone a smile 🤔. I'll give it until the end of today & then give up.
