Sand Loss

They are saying the sand loss is a pretty recent thing, when I was younger I could quite easily jump from the prom down onto the beach, things have changed on the prom with the new sea defenses so that wouldn't be possible but the beach looks about 30ft lower than the prom nowadays.
I wonder if this sand loss has anything to do with the thousands of ton of sand removed and sold off from St Anne's beach in the 80's and 90's 🤔

Still being extracted.

What is the sand used for which is sold off. As a kid, can only remember jumping off central prom just past the Foxhall onto the beach. The pools at the legs of the piers have always been there, not looked to see if they are bigger.

I was always lead to believe it was for glass manufacturing in the past (Pilkington’s maybe?).
