Blackpool Post Office Building

Speculation about turning the Old PO building into a 144 bedroom hotel.
I started my working life in there, 1950, as a telegram Boy.
My dad was a Postman, as was an uncle. My sister was a telephonist.
I also, years later, worked on the counter..
Anyone remember the two big front doors?
One evening at 18.30, closing time, a guy came in snarling, and said, 'Why was that door (pointing left) closed before
six thirty. Guy serving next to me, not a youngster, said, 'When we can get a guy with a thirty foot arm span we'll close them both together'.
The guy looked bemused, and left the building.

Good memories those. Were you on horseback in them days Dave or riding a penny farthing? 🤣 🧡

This has been on and off for years now. The original idea was to use the rear area as a mezzanine style food plaza.
Hope it finally gets up and running.

Went in town today for a couple of late gifts, wont be going again unless I'm in same predicament. It's terrible, if its terrible here it must be worse in most other towns.

I remember the amazing door on a superb building, happy memories

We need modern stylish hotels which attract people who have money and are accustomed to travelling and have expectations regarding standards. This hotel would be targeting the city break crowd and those attending the winter Gardens and conference centre.
I agree, it’s a worthwhile aspiration and there are already a few 5 star hotels being built, my question is, will those people with money want to visit Blackpool, known as a working class holiday destination, with all those run down b & bs right in the town centre.

I'm with you on all of this. However, to attract the city break crowd and conference types we need an airport and not one for the package holidays. There must be an airport design that can include quality construction with quality facilities and a quality car park whilst being more niche. Something that can service small jets from around the UK.

We also need proper park & ride facilities at the south east and south west ends of town and ( no chance of this), private motor vehicles need to be taken off the promenade.

‘Gentrification’ takes time but does work. There’s so many parts of cities we all know that were absolute shitholes and now very desired.
There’s even towns or cities which you would never have wanted to visit dragging the tourists in.

Who would have thought of a weekend away in Brum twenty years ago.
