Blackpool v Bolton BSM Trophy Official Matchnight Thread 30.01.24

LISTENED to the shootout on the way home. Steven wanted to leave early cos d...hd bolton fans were near his car. WOW what a nailbiter. LADS and DADS. he loved it .

Attendance 5,600 still there was plenty of noize from both sides. good derby . just need to carry this into the League like Gaz Bowyer was saying on LANCS., UTMP.

Very even over 90 mins and proper cup tie. And close on the pens. Great 2nd half and pen shootout. Well done Blackpool. The league game deserves a big crowd, especially if we are in with a chance of the play offs. Like to see a signing or two in the next couple of days, and not just players for next season.

Great entertainment….some iffy football at times but that added to the entertainment tonight. Great penalty shoot out to cap it off.Good we got to take them in front of our our supporters.
O’Donnell outstanding all night (albeit a few poor kicks) but saves brilliant.
Gabriel fantastic as was Kouassi when he came on…..Lavery had a stinker for me as did Virtue. CJ Also excellent when he came on and one important block when he tracked back.
£50k prize money for winning tonight…..another home tie in semi’s would be nice….UTMP

It's not huge in football terms, but it all adds up and helps.

What do we get for the semis?

Also it's televised from here on it so there's decent money there too.

So, so far, we have...

160k plus gates and any matchday revenue, TTV passes.

Then the TV money from now.

Barely deserved it! ??? We were far the better team 2nd half and thoroughly deserved to win a great game of football
No. Bolton could have been out of sight in the first half. Thankfully we were better in the second half so a draw just about a fair result.

I agree with you, they were much the better team first half and without a few critical saves they would have easily been 2 up at half time.

OK go on then, I've cracked and checked when the final takes place. Sunday 7th April on the off chance anyone wants to know ........

Semis w/c 19th Feb.

Yeah I think that game will be well attended. It'll help if we get a couple of results in the next games and start climbing into where we should be.

When we start to turn it on not many teams can live with us.

I’ll be there. Really looking forward to it actually.

Just to make us all feel old it was 20 years ago when we beat Southend at Cardiff to win it last time.
Anyone remember that Southend poster (Matt?) coming on here with the pier banter. Something about their pier being longer than all of our 3 piers put together and I still don’t know if that’s true.

It's so they can walk out to the end and be further away from the shoitehole that is Sarfend. 😉

Well, as I passed Fatboy in the NW corner I said see ya later.
When asked wtf was going on I said, I've not see a Blackpool player take a penalty since '91 and I'm not starting watching tonight.
Give over, it doesn't really mean anything said Fatboy.
I replied, every game means something.
I left and was joined in the Bloomfield later by my lads for celebratory drinks👍🏻

Far better 2nd half, well done Pool🧡

A just back brief comment from me.
Yes we were poor 1st half but alot of the team haven't been playing regularly and it showed. So it was basically a 45 minute warm-up and a far better 2nd half performance. Kouassi though hit the ground running.
Kouassi gives us something extra with his power and aggression. I don't know if it would actually work in practice, but I'd enjoy seeing him and Joseph knocking defences all over the place.

Only the brave, Wiz!

What a fantastic end.

So what went right?

We beat Bolton That will always be right
More money for the club is always a good thing.
Confidence building.
We showed resilience and a will to win.

What could be improved?

Watch the game again. I genuinely don’t think the defenders know their responsibilities, Their positional sense is poor and will lead to needless goals scored against us.

Others have mentioned fitness and stamina and after Bolton I have finally agreed with that opinion. Other teams seem faster and stronger especially in the final quarter.

I thought that Bolton started off like a train and almost blew us away first half as we couldn't really match them.

Because of this, they seemed to tire and then we took control - Santos going off helped also.

Right subs from NC, maybe 5/10 mins too late but that's not surprising from him.

Thought after a weak first half Virtue got into the game and played well second half but he was blowing out of his arris late on and cramping up. A run of games for him might not be a bad thing, but we'll see.

Norburn or Gabriel MOM for me. The former has found some form over the last couple of games and the latter should be starting every game without question.

I hope we avoid Peterborough in the semis.

If we get them we will play them away in the league on Sat 17 then again midweek in the cup semi then Bolton at home on Sat 24

Which would be a demanding week for the squad

Lest not forget CJ he made all the difference with his pace.

Agree completely.

Start him at RWB and hold CJ back until last 20 as a forward. He scared the hell out of their tired defence when he came on.
When CJ came on, Gary Bower said words to the effect "When I was playing, I hated it when I had tired legs & in the 75th minute they bring on a really fast winger. I'd think 'oh that's brilliant'."
Defenders with tired legs simply cannot compete with CJ & bringing him on at the right time, is the right way to get the best out of him.

I will have to rewatch the game, but live I thought Norburn consistently hit his passes to players under pressure.

I think that’s last year’s prize money, it’s been reduced this year but still not bad

So it’s going to be one of Bradford Peterborough or Wycombe. Ball numbers out tomorrow and draw live on sky sports Friday tea time
