Blackpool v Bristol City Official Matchday Thread 27.08.22

OK. Just back in the pub and not in the cold light of day but I'm going to call it as I saw it.

Grimshaw needs a break. He was badly placed for their third and he's letting in a few goals. True, many have not been his fault but he needs a break. Maxwell should be given a spell.

Ekpiteta - top class. He made some excellent tackles today.

Thornily shored things up a bit when he came on.

Thompson played well but was well out of position for their second and was weak for their third. Perhaps Husband should come in if fit.

Dougall was weak today. He misplaced passes, lacked concentration at times and did not command defensive midfield.

Lavery...no. perhaps he should be released. I'm sorry to say it but I'm not seeing a good striker there.

Yates quite the opposite. He's come back well this season but he lacks a bit of luck in front of goal.

Madine wasn't as effective as I would like.

Corbeanu will be a good player for us. He needs to start.

Lots of chances - good chances but we need to put more of them away.

We missed the win because of midfield even though I thought Connolly was strong.
Pretty much how I saw it though, I thought Thompson was good.

Not sure about all this praise for Bristol. They have never been more than a bottom third side and I'll be amazed if they finish above half way.

Having said that, we showed some bottle today after conceding three times.
They might have been a bottom three side previously, however they have invested and have a decent team, all their front line a midfield contribute with goals. They looked dangerous going forward a caused us problems they will take points of most teams this season.

Didn't look any more dangerous than us up front though.

That Bowler run and skill 2nd half was class, looked round and saw people like this.

“Bristol's sub Semenyo who scored with his 1st touch looked a right handful as soon as he came on. Asked a lot of questions, we could do with someone similar”

If only we had a spare £15m (Semenyo’s current value).

Think they've turned down £10 million from someone, but we can dream.

Grimshaw needs a break?! Stopped reading at that point, lad makes a mistake and a typical tosser on this board can't wait to jump on it.

Well, that was a different day. rather than board the train to Blackpool at Bradford, I boarded at Leeds and had a choice of seats. As usual the train was over full, but, I was comfortable. Sitting next to a Nobber from Preston, had a decent chat with him and his wife, as he was a trad ale fan and on the way to the Opera House he accompanied me to the Cask & Tap which he was over the moon with. After having a quick pint at the No10, settled down to watch one of the best matches I've seen for a long time, real edge of the seat stuff, excellent play from both sets of players and probably a fair result, in the end. I felt for Marvin who's own goal was unavoidable., but shit happens.

Back for a quickie to the C&T before heading for the train home which although arriving ten minutes before departure was already full, so it was standing from Bpl North to Poulton, where I managed to get a seat. Arriving at Preston, the platform was full of Dingles who boarded the train and made a quiet journey rather noisy. There were two in front of me making absolute arseholes of themselves, singing (fair enough), chanting (fair enough) but then banging on the seats, the window and the luggage rack and standing on the seat. It made the atmosphere quite inhospitable and on the table next to the two was a lady with three young children, who were obviously very upset and frightened. I had no choice but to ask them , politely, to sit down and behave. Which resulted in me being attacked verbally with copius F and C words, so I asked if they could repeat what they had said with out any obscenities, which, of course invited more profanities from them. The cockier one of the two ten grabbed my arm and asked what i would do about it if he didn't sit down. Now I'm not a fighting man, but have handled bigger and fiercer men than him when I was a pub landlord. So it was a bit like a red rag to a bull. There is now one Dingle and his mate who will forever remember that insulting a 74 year old Blackpool supporter does not pay off, and they have a lady to thank for rescuing them.

All in all another great day out with some odd twists. UTMP.

To be successful in the Championship you need to win most of your home matches and pick up wins and draws away from home too.
We got a draw today right at the death. I can understand why there are those on here saying that they'll take that.
But would they have taken that at half time? Or at 3pm?
They'll not be many successful teams in the Championship this season.
Only 3 home wins yesterday!!

I'm not overly worried about Blackpools home record, I think we will win most of our games👍🏻

Great game, but not good from the defensive standpoint. I watched my IPTV at home in Spain, and it was a bit wierd, as the 1st half was "Robins TV" which was of course biased, but the 2nd half was Radio Lancs coverage which of course was totally unbiased (Ha Ha!). I did agree with one thing they said on Robins TV - they had Williams down as the weak link in our defence, and tbh I thought he was leggy and his reading of an admittedly very mobile strike force was not good at all. Much improved I thought when Thorniley was introduced. I also thought Marv was brilliant despite his own goal. and Thompson was impressive.

More negatives - I think Gabriel needs much more game time before he gets back to his best, and some of our passing was poor - Bristol's passing percentage at half time was far better statistically. Midfield tried hard but we already know what the problems are there, and we urgently need more personnel in that area.

Up front, I thought our strikers were a constant threat to the Bristol defence, but once again Bowler was outstanding and we'll definitely miss him if he goes. Hope his replacement has alot to offer.

Overall a 7/10 from me.
Best assessment Ive read today. Agree about Williams .

I really enjoyed yesterday's match and thought we should have gone 2-0 up, and at 2-1, we had a couple of great chances to go 3-1. A nice goal at the end gave us a deserved 3-3, but I always felt we should have beaten Bristol City. We had another appalling referee. What do we ever do to refs to make them not like us, apart from slag them off for most of their decisions?
I think Michael Appleton has got us playing more attacking football than Neil Critchley did, which is better to watch, but I'll always be grateful for NC for getting us back into The Championship.
When Josh Bowler goes on his runs with the ball, it's like watching Tony Green again, and if we lose him for a paltry sum like £4M, someone definitely wants their bumps feeling. Josh is worth at the very least £10M. If he is still here after the transfer window closes, PLEASE put him on an improved long term contract and vastly increase the amount for his release clause.

Thompson is going to turn out to be an amazing signing, if Gabriel stays fit it is going to be brilliant having them on either side of the defence.

I wasn't impressed with the appointment of Appleton, I had fears of a Grayson-esque scenario. I'm definitely sold on him, I like the football we play and his ability to make meaningful subs is a god send after Critchley (who I liked, but I hated his subs, or lack of!). Two 3 - 3 games on the bounce is mental, I think 3 appointments in we're finally playing the attacking football Sadler talked about when he took over!

I am finding there is still an element of anti-Appleton at the games though, after their 3rd went in the atmosphere went sour and the groans were coming out - thankfully we got an equaliser as I feel some are waiting for an opportunity to get on Appleton's back. Critchley was afforded much more patience and even an element of untouchableness, even when we lost in the last minute he'd be sent off the pitch like a hero. People need to start sucking up the fact he wasn't their first choice an get behind him and the team no matter what, like last season.

Is this guy for real? ‘Roared on‘, by a ‘bumper’ away following? He’s clearly never experienced 8000 odd Sunderland fans descending on his home ground?

I was severely disappointed in their away following. The 5th biggest city in the country population wise and they bring just over 1k to Blackpool on an August bank holiday. That is shocking.

Fairly certain we've taken similar down there for just a regular league match, no bank holiday or nowt and we're supporters of a football club from a town in the North West.

Disgraceful support in context. Two August fixtures absolutely wasted, Reading opening day and Bristol City bank holiday weekend, other clubs would have filled the East and then brought more on top of that just for the weekend in the town.
