Blackpool v Northampton Official Matchnight Thread 28.11.23

That’s me done for the season I gave up my two season tickets after the Birmingham game at home last season I’m it cost me 50 odd quid a game for me and my lad I’m done not even watching the highlights ** load donkeys Chris Hamilton couldn’t trap a bag of cement useless
Tatty bye 👋

I agree, we can't accept or be content with results like this, we should have at worst drawn tonight.

However, we shouldn't immediately jump to conclusions that our season is over or that Critchley needs to ditch the system.

We created more than enough chances to win tonight, but didn't finish while gifting the opposition a goal.

It's frustrating, but we are still on an upward trajectory.
I fear not upward enough

The tactical intransigence when it’s not working is the most annoying thing. There is never a hint of a change of plan, and tonight the personnel changes were too late obviously

Just like we shouldn't jump to conclusions saying we're going up on the back of a win at top of the table

You may be right, the difference between 20/21 and now is that then we had a ton of games in hand on the teams ahead of us, so even if we were behind on points, we still controlled our own destiny.

Now we have the reverse, teams ahead of us have played less games and have more points, it's a much more difficult challenge on hand now, if we don't get consistent soon we'll be far too behind.

Just like we shouldn't jump to conclusions saying we're going up on the back of a win at top of the table
Correct, which is why I said we still had a long way to go after the result on Saturday.

Lots of ups and down will happen to every team, we just need to more consistently see those ups to have any chance at promotion.

Lol, on paper we played decent, but not great tonight, it was a freak result.

18 shot, 5 on target for 1.36 xG v.s. their 10 shots, 4 on target for 0.67 xG.

Mistakes were made and we should have been drawing AT WORST, but results like this happen.

It's 20 games into the new season, nothing has been won or lost yet, we're not where we want to be yet, but there have been more than enough positive signs lately to make me believe they will get the consistency thing right eventually.
Fuck your xG it's the numbers in the result thar bloody matter🤬

That was absolutely abysmal. Most played poor tonight and Dale was very poor but special mentions have to go out to Ekpiteta and CJ. How in God's earth CJ stayed on the pitch is beyond me, Jesus fcuking wept and Marv..... What a horror show that was watching him tonight.

Unfair...he's been decent ..just one of those nights. Northampton have been aggressive and competitive .
I think that's what you might simply call going into a match with the right spirit. You make it sound as though it's something for which the Cobblers should be deserving of praise! As professional footballers, surely 'all' players, from whichever division, have a duty/responsibilty to perform to their very highest level - be they from Northampton Town, or Blackpool ...

People writing us off after a disappointing result. We'd just won two games back to back 4 nil, one of them away to the league leaders who hadn't lost for 27 games (or whatever it was).

We need to become more consistent, I agree with that - but no way does tonight confirm we ain't going up. A long way to go yet and another transfer window, we sit just outside the play-offs and have shown promising signs recently of it starting to click. Disappointing stuff tonight but its not the end of the world.
The manner of defeat was extremely disappointing and unacceptable. We should have been on a real high after 2 consecutive 4-0 wins

They played well to stop us getting into any flow, credit to them. We still should have won the game though, we've had a couple of howlers and should have done better with a few more half chances.

Happy to put this one behind us and move on.

Just waiting for either fy8 of Bifster to post praising Critchleys "masterclass"
😉
Can’t blame Critchley for tonight. We all wanted to keep playing a winning team. Too many players underperformed.

Hubby been player of the season so far but that back pass unforgivable. CJ well off it. Beesley fluffing a sitter at 0-0. Dembele and Dougall’s passing well off it. Don’t get me started on Dale heading over from 6 yard in a virtual open net.

Vintage Blackpool. Beat the best and lose to shite

I agree. Just think that The Cobblers had a bit more of it then we seemed to . Bummer

Backpass FC strikes again. You know players are devoid of ideas when they actively turn with the ball and look to play it backwards. Lost count how many points this strategy has cost us this season?

Lacked sharpness and quality. Too many unforced errors. Fair play to Northampton, they worked hard and took their chances. I think that confirms we are not good enough for automatics and to be quite honest our inconsistency is going to make the play offs a big ask. Not point being too down, just as we shouldn't have got ahead of ourselves after the Pompey win.

Their tactics paid off but we looked way off our game. The smart, quick triangles weren't happening, Dembele was well policed, as was Hamilton. Yes, we had good chances to win it but we spent too much time being lethargic, in both mind and body. Perhaps it was a game too far for that line up.

Reckon they did their homework on us.
Put the pressure on as Blackpool fuck around with it at the back.
Press high and watch the Keystone cops.
But surely, teams/players know they're going be watched by scouts from prospective opponents, and that any failings and weaknesses they exhibit in games are going to be exploited to the full. Hence the high-press Northampton utilised in their tactical approach tonight. So many times we've just seemed increasingly oblivious to this fact and we basically find ourselves, rather predictably, playing into our opponents' hands - time, after time, after time.

Some one needs to undertake, asap, an indepth analysis of our tactical approach to games, because it's beginning to look to me, and to a host of others, as though "we've basically been found out ..."

Said it on another thread, the best team won on the night. Pushed onto Pennington and Husband, we couldn't get the ball to our wing backs. They picked up every second ball in midfield and looked dangerous every time they went forward, especially first half.
Leaving Morgan on the bench until the 85th minute when we struggled all night in midfield was baffling.
Brady their manager gave a Critchley masterclass.

It's not just tonight though is it. as soon as a team presses high you know we are in for a long night. It felt like games earlier this season, with no-one showing for the ball and in the end the ball goes back to Grimmy and hoof. What the f was going on with that throw in towards the end, 3 different people wanted to take it and each time you could see they were only going to throw it back to Grimmy anyway?
In the first half you could see they were cutting off passes from Marv to Dale and CJ, so again clearly spotted the danger men from Saturday.

All in all they did a number on us and they won't be the last team to come here and set up that way .... But where is the evidence of us mixing things up and trying something different?

Back down to earth. Too many things didn’t work out tonight but key moments for me were the Beesley chance and Husband backpass. When looking for an upside Joseph looked a real handful when he came on. Over a week till next league fixture.

I'd hardly call it a freak result. You're right I agree we're making progress I just can't see it happening this season. Another 6 months working with the current players combined with the right signings next summer then maybe next season we'll start firing more consistently

Still should be winning games like this if we’ve any promotion ambitions. A draw wouldn’t be awful. 7 points from Shrews, Pompey & Northampton, you’d take it before any of those were played
would you take 3 points from exeter away, port vale at home, leyton orient at home and lincoln away? nowhere near good enough for promotion

Seriously? We had 3 attempts on target, 2 shots in the first half that were basically passes to the keeper and Rhodes goal, the Northampton keeper won't have many more easier nights work

Annoying ass result and performance, we weren't at our best and Northampton played well, but if a couple things go differently (Beesley's miss, their player that should have been sent off) then we easily win.

League 1 doesn't have much quality, but it's still all about fine margins and tonight they just didn't cut the right way for us.
Garbage assessment.

During the course of a match, not everything will go your way, we all (well, 'nearly' all) know that, but surely, you just have to adjust accordingly and attempt to alter your approach.

And in response to the meaningless utterances - 'Beesley's miss, their player that should have been sent off', the only response which springs to my mind is the one that goes: 'if my aunt had been born with bollocks, she'd have been my uncle' ...

It just seems to me, at present, as though we're currently saddled with so many failings/deficiencies, people are showing themselves to be incapable of seeing the wider picture.

Time to refocus. And time to banish talk of promotion - cos it ain't 'appening ...

Frustrating watch that.

Husband has been immense all season and h he's been punished.

We should have drawn that really; but that's football.
Not many have picked up on it but the last 3/4 games I think he's been particularly bad. Was our best player before that no question,

Yes we probably deserved a draw but the issue here is the consistency and grinding out results when we're not at our best. Top teams like Portsmouth, Bolton etc will do that. Tonight was the perfect game to get a scrappy 1-0, 2-1 but to lose the game after being so comfortable against Shrews and Pompey is what is most deflating.

CJ has had an absolute stinker tonight.
So did most of our team. I was happy with the team selection but we didn't turn up at all. They closed us down & the back passing started followed by an ineffective hoof. We hardly won anything in the air at either end & don't get me on to the passing 😂 they did a job on us. it's probably my fault for looking up at the table as every time I get enthusiastic this type of thing happens & has done over the years. Thankfully there's plenty of games left so let's hope we learn how to deal with these different scenario's. It's quite a challenge to get promoted at the first attempt after relegation as many other bigger teams have found out, but it's sill possible & I certainly won't be giving up hope even after this terrible performance if you can call it that.

That is an excellent summary. Critchley seems to have no in game management skills and it's costing us. With us it's all about momentum and how we start. If it's not working or we are being tactically outdone like tonight he doesn't know how to adjust it. Why for instance didn't he try switching the wing backs? Why did he persist with Carey who was struggling to get going all night? Why only make a sub on 65 then two more on 80 minutes? Why continue to play through Marv all night when it's clear he couldn't pass wind?

Really?

You think we are deliberately trying not to get promoted.

I find it hard to believe a fan would write such crap.
Could you just point out to me, please, where I supposedly said 'we are deliberately trying not to get promoted.'
You can't, because I said no such thing. On the strength of a number of 'questionable' performances (and there have been a few of late), I'm sorry, but I felt I had every reason for querying the strenght of the desire certain (not all) players had shown towards achieving the all-important goal of promotion. And not for one minute did I level the accusation of anyone 'deliberately trying not to get promoted.' And I find it a gross insult that anyone should be so stupid as to make such a libellous statement.

Just to condense the point I have obviously failed (miserably?) to put across, speaking from a purely personal point of view, I firmly believe players should be prepared to sweat blood in their determination to help Pool, as a side, achieve as much as possible during the course of a campaign. And, I'm sorry, but there have been one or two instances I can think of where there has been limited demonstration of that level of commitment.

Sorry if that particular point sits rather uncomfortably with you, but I can only say it as I see it.

Very disappointed, our inability to put the ball in the net from great positions cost the game, and the players confidence. Congrats to the Cobblers, stuck to their game plan and took their chances.

We go again

They played well simply because we allowed them with our one and only tactic of playing it across the back line and then hitting the long ball forward. So easy for any team to defend against and hit straight back at us.

They were excellent without the ball and restricted us from playing how we played in our last two games, they gave us no time on the ball. It's not our tactic to knock it around the back and go long, we want to play through the lines using Carey and Dembele and use our wingbacks effectively, they stopped us doing it so they deserve credit in my opinion.
