Blackpool v Northampton Official Matchnight Thread 28.11.23

They were excellent without the ball and restricted us from playing how we played in our last two games, they gave us no time on the ball. It's not our tactic to knock it around the back and go long, we want to play through the lines using Carey and Dembele and use our wingbacks effectively, they stopped us doing it so they deserve credit in my opinion.
I totally agree very well put, when we play long its because we have no other options, we pass backwards and sideways looking for options and outlets but tonight there wasn't many to find. Would their keeper have taken some much time doing things if they had been getting beat NO, they came with a job to do and nailed it perfectly, sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say good job done from them.
We don't lack effort and you can see the frustration when things are not going right both on and off the field
One thing i have noticed away from the football is the ground is a lot quieter nowadays and there isn't that atmosphere there anymore that the club is known for and the players will sense that. Only my opinion

What is the point of a wing back who can't go on the outside of a defender? Dale always stops turns back on to his right foot, thus losing momentum and minimising options.
He needs to put the cross in himself, he can create a yard of space so not sure why he doesn't cross it himself more

On the night, from minute 1 until the final whistle we had one tactic….knock it long. It was very obvious that was how we thought was the best way to play against them.

Agree with the crowd comment, the fans get very negative and flat when things aren't going our way.
Definitely the atmosphere has changed this year, maybe the lack of away fans has something to do with it.

I also think the players really struggle when the crowd starts getting on their backs.
I don't see many of our players handling the groans too well unfortunately, Rhodes and Norburn can probably shrug it off but the rest seem to go in panic mode.
Fans need to stop being so negative but the players need to toughen up and get a bit angry, fuck the groans type attitude.

Yeah i agree but we have always created our own atmosphere and are known for that, with regards the players we are all different animals it effects players in different ways, some will work harder, some just go into their shells, some hide, and others it wont bother.

Expectations are too high ... we are an average league one outfit at present... inconsistent... last season we were a very poor championship side. If, as a fan base , we can accept a season of consolidation and see glimpses of what could be next season... we’ll be fine... if we remain with a sense of entitlement.. we’ll get what we deserve!

Tactically & “sportingly” not at it last night.
Northampton were at it, compact & closed down well. Critchley must have foreseen this as we tactically went long to Beesley early doors. I thought Beesley did well first half in winning flick on’s etc. We got in wrong that we didn’t have anyone near Beesley to pick the second ball up. Dembele needed to be near him & or Joseph maybe should have played for the long ball tactic. Rhodes is totally wasted picking the second ball up 35-40 yards out & never going to outrun / dribble past defenders from there.
Sportingly we are naive & too nice. As soon as their full back got booked we should have been targeting him with CJ running at him or chasing balls over his head. Also the players should have been in uproar following the challenge on Grimshaw & influencing the ref to brandish a second yellow for the Northampton striker. Finally, I’ve only seen the one angle of the Beesley incident in the first half but to me the keeper made zero contact on the ball & went straight into the man. No one appealing ? If you don’t ask you don’t get ?

We need more than one person capable of dribbling.
Mark Dembele out of the game and all we can do is pass sideways or backwards, and how many timea this season has that backpass led to us conceding a goal

It's good to read quite a few posts on this thread that are offering positive critiques: what seemed to be poor tactics (going long to often), how we might have dealt with the close marking. It's more engaging than, "I'm done with this sh**te for good!". Of particular interest for me was a poster who suggested that the wingers might have changed sides. Of course, this isn't anything new - Holloway had Ince and Phillips do it regularly during games - but it might have been effective last night. Dembele was free to roam across the forward midfield so it needn't have mattered to him that he found himself working with Dale on the right, or crossing the pitch to assist CJ. It shouldn't need an interjection from the manager to enable it either. The Captain should be able to carry in-play messages to the team.

They played well simply because we allowed them with our one and only tactic of playing it across the back line and then hitting the long ball forward. So easy for any team to defend against and hit straight back at us.
Orrrrr, to put it another way, our approach to games is now becoming ssssso predictable, opposing teams can read us like the proverbial book and adjust their gameplan accordingly. We are just so lacking in flair and invention, we are becoming almost painful to watch, with opponents simply nullifying us at every turn.

Maybe the team should try 'mixing it up a bit' once in a while ... If they could just get the necessary permission from his 'lordship'.

🤣🤣 it was hardly a Schumacher challenge was it?
Bees was that cleaned out he was sat up complaining!!
Whereas poor old Schumacher had to undergo long-term hospitalisation as a result of the career-threatening injuries he sustained. But I see your point, Wiz, whatever the 'impact' on Bees, it was all a bit powder-puff ...

I see your point, BFCfan33, but do the team not share some responsibility for the rather lukewarm atmosphere which has been so much in evidence during recent home games, as a result of their absolutely piss-poor displays out on the pitch in recent fixtures at BR? Should 'generating atmosphere' not be a two-way affair?

Yeah fair point, it is up to the team to get get the crowd going to a point and your two way affair point is a good way of putting it

It was Patrick Battison who sustained horror injuries

Critchley’s tactics will not allow for any variation in style or approach. It is incredibly rigid in terms of positional play.

Backpass FC strikes again. You know players are devoid of ideas when they actively turn with the ball and look to play it backwards. Lost count how many points this strategy has cost us this season?
The evidence 'points', I would argue, to the strategy costing us in all manner of ways; too many to mention in the limited space offered by a miniscule messageboard ... Perhaps if we were to consult with 'one-track' Critchley, he could come up with a telling analysis. Then again - perhaps not! Cracked record 'n all that - innit.

If the efl wanna do night games it’d be much better if they were kept to localish games like pool v cods. Pool v Wigan pool v Bolton and keep the log trips to a Saturday.

As a neutral I don’t see a lot of Blackpool but went along Tuesday night just to catch a game, thought even at 1-0 down the game was very much there for the taking, the 10 mins before the equaliser and up until conceding again I thought Blackpool had a very positive spell of possession when they kept hold of it and built pressure on a Northampton side that evidently could not cope with, thought it was a matter of time until the 2nd goal was scored.

What I thought was bizarre was after conceding Blackpool went back to lumping it forward, what was even more bizarre was that they were straight balls fired in centrally which were predictable and easy to defend against.

Hopefully one to learn from in the future, wish you lot all the best this season been living locally for a fair few years I want you back in the championship so I can get my local away game back.

The Tuesday night curse strikes again, talk about deflating, in one way entirely predictable but we were so good against Portsmouth that I felt like we could overcome. Feel sick.
For, 'The Tuesday night curse strikes again', read, 'The Tuesday night trigger for footballing incompetence is pulled again'...
