Blackpool v Peterborough BSM Semi Final Official Matchnight Thread 20.02.24

Didn't play that way for the last 4 games? Think we're over doing it.

They played above their normal level.

And we played below the garbage standard we've set this season. And that was the result.

They are a good team, I don't like their over playing of the football in their 5 yard box. City and Arsenal don't do that for good reason.
Apples and oranges my friend

Any neutral would think they were the home team and 60 - 70% possession on a ground that has been a fortress all season doesn't lie

Critch set us up to fail, and his tactic worked

He's signed for Coventry and loaned back to P'Boro. They have a knack of finding players and developing them, they've been doing it for years. We've been given a footballing lesson tonight .....again! Poor performances both individually and collectively Virtue, Connolly, Morgan and Coulson. In fact, easier to name the players that did ok O'Donnell and Big Marv.

Critchley, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dumb have no ability to identify what's going wrong and how to correct it. I can see it going horribly wrong on Saturday and that'll be season over.
£4m plus add on's too, not bad for someone who was playing non league a few seasons ago.

They are a good team. It’s just the manner of the way we set up and the team selection that’s the issue. No shame in being beaten by a good team as long as you give it a right old go. Last night was another in a long long line of powder puff uninterested performances that fell apart with no attempt to correct it midmatch…. knee capped from the off by random player selections masquerading as careful squad rotation.

Hardly a "fortress" 🤣 Peterbrough have put 7 past us in 2 games, Derby put 3 past us, Northampton put 2 past us to win 2-1. Then we've had dire 0-0 draws with Port Fail and Orient, crap performances and draws with Oxfraud and Charlton too.

I think the most disappointing thing in some ways was that in the original 3-5-2 there was not a single bit of good combination play between the 2 forwards I can remember. It was a waste of time to play 2 up front. We were a bit better at the start of the second half and then the switch to 3-4-3 was perhaps a bit better. At least it gave their full backs something to think about because we were constantly getting overloaded down the flanks. The switch to 4-2-4 did not work.
It isn't like we didn't try to play proactively, attempt to press high and get players forward. But we were comprehensively beaten and played with a complete lack of cohesion.

Having watched it back several times, he gave the ref no choice.
In today's world, perhaps. But you and I will both have grown up in times when it was usual to see goalkeepers dive at an opponent's feet. If there had been a penalty awarded every time Harry Thompson flew out of his goal to stop an attack then we'd have lost more games than not. Yes, I'm getting into old fogy territory but I still believe there should be more leeway for keepers that do it.

Even the Posh fans are saying that was never a penalty!

Don’t disagree but sadly ( we can say that having seen how the game used to be refereed) that is not the case anymore.

My biggest bug bear is the constant harassment of the 4th official / linesman in front of the west, from the opposition bench. Last night it was so well choreographed and orchestrated by Ferguson sat up in the directors box.
He was in constant touch with 3 of his assistants who took it in turns to spend most of the game questioning everything, and I mean everything. So much so, the 3rd assistant waited and waited at half time for the referee to leave the field and was chatting to him all the way down the tunnel. It really is time for the officials to grown a pair and tell them to f’off.

Yeah, I was far more angry after Port Vale and Cheltenham to be honest. As both of those sides battered us and they currently are languishing in and around the relegation zone.

Peterborough have a bright young inexperienced squad who we didn't compete with.

Yes they are going to wembley and on that performance will probably get promoted,we won’t.

Yet we beat them in the league at their place less than a week ago. I would take more seriously how we perform on Saturday against Bolton. If that is a shitshow then I’m squarely in your camp. I thought season was over at Stevenage and called for NC to go after that disgrace, but winning away at peterboro followed by beating Bolton would give us a real chance…especially seeing Oxford and Stevenage are bleeding points
